The Kinetics Of The Exchange Between Sn(Ii) And Sn(Iv) In Absolute Alcohol, E. Gerald Meyer

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The radiochemical exchange reaction may in general be written AX+BX= +BX where Xrepresents a radioactive atom of X. The species AX and AXare assumed to be chemically identical as are the species BX and BX. This assumption introduces no appreciable error even when working with atoms having an atomic weight as low as fourteen.

In contrast to most alkaloids, berberine hydroxide is more soluble than its salts. Its chemical structure has been established, but a correlations of many of its properties and its structures has not been made.

The purpose of this work was to undertake an analytical study of berberine, hoping to collect data which would make possible the correlation of certain properties of the compound with its structure. The study was planned to …

The Application Of Qualitative Inorganic Macro Procedures And Reagents To Spot Test Analysis, John Albert Stich Aug 1950

The Application Of Qualitative Inorganic Macro Procedures And Reagents To Spot Test Analysis, John Albert Stich

Bachelors’ Theses

Qualitative inorganic analysis is that branch of applied chemistry which has to do with the systematic detection or identification, and separation of the various metals and groups of elements which make up inorganic compounds. The indentification is made on the basis of precipitates and the color changes thereof, which result when a specific reagent is added to a solution of the sample. As opposed to quantitative analysis, measurability is not the essential factor, but it must be possible to observe the reaction easily and indubitably. It is not necessary for the material being tested for to be converted completely to …

The Effect Of Metals On Yeast Activity, Warren Joseph Chamberlain Aug 1950

The Effect Of Metals On Yeast Activity, Warren Joseph Chamberlain

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer, having been employed in the dry yeast research laboratory of one of this country's largest yeast concerns for the past three years, is very much interested in those factors which might affect the qualities of the final dry yeast product, and has therefore made the investigations presented in this paper.

Because of the numerous pieces of metallic equipment employed in the production of yeast, the possibility of metallic contamination in the final yeast product is considerable. Thus, the investigation presented in this paper was carried out in an effort to determine just what effect various concentrations of various …

An Investigation Of The Electrolytic Behavior Of The Nitroparaffins, Harold A. Brejcha Jul 1950

An Investigation Of The Electrolytic Behavior Of The Nitroparaffins, Harold A. Brejcha

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

A study of the electrolytic behavior of this group of compounds was undertaken to gain some knowledge of a little known type of reaction of these compounds. The study was made, not so much in view of developing new uses for these compounds, as to gain a better understanding of their behavior under various conditions. Another reason for this investigation is the fact that chemical reduction by the usual methods is inconvenient. With this fact in mind, the inherent convenience of electrolytic methods made the study of the electrolytic behavior of the nitroparrffins worthy of investigation.

A Study Of The Use Of The Dicyanatodipyridine (Ii) Complex For The Determination Of Cyanate, Jean Mcclelland May 1950

A Study Of The Use Of The Dicyanatodipyridine (Ii) Complex For The Determination Of Cyanate, Jean Mcclelland

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Treadwell states in his text, Analytical Chemistry, Volume II, that "the only method for examining cyanates consists in determining the amount of carbon and nitrogen present by combustion." A review of the available literature shows that, although this is not literally true, a procedure for this quantitative determination of small amounts of cyanates in the presence of interfering substances is lacking.

A survey of the literature yielded few references for instrumental methods for the quantitative determination of cyanates. Ripan-Tilici published a method for the determination of cyanates poteniometrically, but attempts to duplicate her work have failed. Madame Tilici, in …

The Syntheses And Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of 2-Imidazolines, 2-Imidazolidones And Imidazolidines, Robert J. Ferm

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The first method used to prepare 2-imidazolines was through the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with ammonia. Amarin, which is known as 2,4,5-triphenyl-2-imidazoline, was the first compound reported to be prepared in this manner. This type of reaction has since been widely studied 2,3,4,5,6 in connection with the preparation of 2,4,5-triarylimidazolines. Furfural and ammonia have also been reported to react in a similar manner. Amarin has also been obtained from the reaction of a mixture of benzil, ammonia, and benzaldehyde.

The Chelation Of Praseodymium As A Function Of Ph Using Thenolytrifluoroacetone, Thomas K. Keenan

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The rare earth elements, including elements 57 through 71, provide many diverse series of studies through their chemical reactions. In as much as these elements are all in Group III of the periodic table, they are markedly similar in their properties. The separation, insulation and purification of the various rare earths from one another has long been a problem of great interest to the chemist. All of these elements show a principle valence of plus three. Cerium has a well-defined plus four state, stable in aqueous solution and europium forms a stable, insoluable divalent sulfate. Those two exceptions, however, are …

An Investigation Of The Dissociation Of Certain Cyclohexane Derivatives Of Aliphatic Acids, Jack Norman Finch May 1949

An Investigation Of The Dissociation Of Certain Cyclohexane Derivatives Of Aliphatic Acids, Jack Norman Finch

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

For years it has been known that certain cyclic derivatives of aliphatic acids show hormone activity as growth regulators for some plants, and popular acceptance and application of the regulators has been remarkably rapid. Two commercially available growth regulating substances are indoleacetic acid and phenylacetic acid. Others also include indolebutyric acid and naphthaleneacetic acids (13). There are also certain phenoxy derivatives of acetic acid such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (commonly called 2,4 D), which have specific destructive effects to growing plants. Many derivatives of phenoxyacetic acid have been prepared, their physical properties determined, and an attempt made to correlate molecular …

Studies In The Determination Of Iodine In Soils Organic Materials, And Waters, Russell T. Lundell

Theses and Dissertations

A summary of the literature on the nutritional value of iodine in the diet of various forms of life is given. The majority of evidence indicates that iodine is an essential element in plant and animal nutrition. It functions particularly in animal metabolism in the form of thyroxine. The occurrence of iodine in a nature has been briefly discussed. Investigations made in this regard indicate iodine to be almost universally distributed in very minute amounts. Most iodine salts are soluble in water and their distribution is affected by water movements. Results of iodine determinations made during the course of this …
