Analysis is a very important branch of chemistry, for it is such a practical part of the science. Analysis is itself divided into two parts. Qualitative analysis discovers what things are present in the material in question. Quantitative analysis then determines how much of each ingredient is present. This thesis considers a limited section of quantitative analysis.

In particular, it is a qualitative and quantitative study of_ the decomposition products of ethyl acetate as effected by ultraviolet radiations, together with the development of experimental apparatus. This thesis, presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science, provides a systematic chemical study of the alkaloids, a class of complex nitrogenous plant substances possessing basic properties. Barre opens by defining the alkaloids and surveying the various systems used to classify them, whether by natural versus artificial origin, chemical nucleus (pyridine, quinoline, or isoquinoline), volatility, or botanical family of origin, and outlines their general physical and chemical properties, including solubility, optical activity, and characteristic reactions with precipitating and color-test reagents.

This work has been undertaken as a ·result of tests recently carried out at the Greene Brothers' Brook Hill Farm at Genesee Depot, Wisconsin. It was found that cows, when fed artificially dried hay, produce milk in quantities greatly in excess of that accountable from known differences in the hay. Moreover, the milk seemed to have a different flavor - similar to pasture produced milk.

It has been shown in many instances biological activity, fermentation, and filtration are influenced to a large extent by variations in the H-ion concentration. Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting.
