The Role Of Outdoor Recreation In Family Enrichment, Patti A. Freeman, Ramon B. Zabriskie Jan 2002

The Role Of Outdoor Recreation In Family Enrichment, Patti A. Freeman, Ramon B. Zabriskie

Faculty Publications

The family is the fundamental unit in society and perhaps the oldest and most important of all human institutions. Several studies have indicated a positive correlation between strong, successful families and family participation in outdoor recreational activities. This paper addresses the role of structured outdoor recreation programming in family enrichment. Findings from two studies based in the United States are presented: one on the effect of a one–day family outdoor adventure program on parental and child perceptions of family functioning and the other from a qualitative inquiry into the meaning of family residential camping experiences. The first study collected both …

Factors Which Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Distance Education In Analytical Subject Areas, Jeffrey G. Sumrall Jan 2002

Factors Which Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Distance Education In Analytical Subject Areas, Jeffrey G. Sumrall

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study focuses on current faculty attitudes and perceptions of distance education. A thorough review of literature indicates that faculty members are critical elements of distance education delivery and that certain factors (tenure, departmental incentives, gender, age) influence faculty participation. The main hypothesis being investigated is whether or not the analytical nature of the course is in fact the prime indicator in faculty participation. Faculty members from three randomly chosen SREB member institutions were surveyed. The purpose for choosing SREB member institutions for the population was for generalizing the findings to higher education institutions throughout the Southeastern United States. The …

Connecting Personal Biography And Social History: Women Casino Workers And The Global Economy, Jill B. Jones, Susan Chandler Dec 2001

Connecting Personal Biography And Social History: Women Casino Workers And The Global Economy, Jill B. Jones, Susan Chandler

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Economic globalization has been described as the "most fundamental redesign of the planet's political and economic arrangements since as least the industrial revolution" (Mander, 1996). This article explores its implications in the lives of a group of women casino workers. Based on a qualitative study in which data were collected from key informants, focus groups of community leaders and professionals, and in-depth interviews with women casino workers themselves, the study attempts, in the spirit of C. Wright Mills (1959) and social work's tradition of person-in-environment, to connect "the patterns of [individual] lives and the course of world history."

Raymond J. Chambers' Contributions To The Development Of Accounting Thought, Abdulmalik A. Al-Hogail, Gary John Previts

Accounting Historians Journal

Raymond J. Chambers was an internationally recognized scholar, influential theorist, as well as an important contributor to the study of the history of accounting thought. He was an advocate of the needs of financial statement users. He investigated what users, not accountants, considered important and what in fact was relevant to their decision-making. He challenged existing theoretical propositions which he believed were only rationalization of current practices. He argued that the lack of a rigorously developed theory of accounting led to contradictory and less relevant accounting practices. In his theory of continuously contemporary accounting (CoCoA), he demonstrated with logic and …

An Activity Book To Teach Primary Skills To Individuals And Families Through Fun Interventions, Toni D. Cole Jan 2001

An Activity Book To Teach Primary Skills To Individuals And Families Through Fun Interventions, Toni D. Cole

Theses

This thesis will focus on a new intervention approach that teaches individuals and families the skills needed to cope with life in appropriate ways.

Throughout history there have been many therapeutic theories and approaches that have clinically addressed the issues facing today's individuals and families. Play therapy and the family preservation model are the two theoretical approaches this thesis explores as key components in the design of a new intervention approach that meets the needs of individuals and families in their own environment.

This thesis proposes play therapy techniques that can be utilized by paraprofessionals, taking the teaching approach to …

Community Practice And The Internet, Roger A. Lohmann, John Mcnutt

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

They are, in order of presentation, electronic communication and networking, electronic advocacy, fund raising support, geographic information systems and data base management. We conclude this brief article with a brief discussion of information poverty and the growing disparity of information haves and have-nots.

Motives For Corporate Philanthropy In El Salvador: Altruism And Political Legitimacy, Carol M. Sanchez Oct 2000

Motives For Corporate Philanthropy In El Salvador: Altruism And Political Legitimacy, Carol M. Sanchez

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper discusses how Salvadoran companies practice corporate philanthropy in El Salvador, and what might motivate it. First, I briefly discuss three principal theories of corporate philanthropy, and explore some current trends in international corporate philanthropy to highlight some of the motives Salvadoran companies may have to participate in charitable activities. Then, I discuss the history of the Salvadoran private sector to help us understand philanthropic activity today. Next, I suggest that philanthropic acts by Salvadoran firms are driven by altruistic and politically strategic motives, and reflect individualistic and paternalistic attitudes. In the discussion, I include examples of Salvadoran corporate …
