Exploring The Perceptions Of Religious Trauma Among Former Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Who Identify As A Sexual Minority, Samuel Clemens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative study explored the perceived experiences of religious trauma among formerly active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) who identify as sexual minorities. Religious trauma, characterized by psychological, emotional, and social harm, arises from interactions with religious institutions and teachings. For sexual minorities within the LDS Church, strict adherence to heteronormative principles and rigid gender roles often results in identity suppression, emotional distress, and social isolation. Utilizing a generic qualitative inquiry approach, this study investigated how participants interpret their experiences of religious trauma and its perceived effects on their lives. Twelve participants aged 20–74 …

Financial provision continues to factor significantly in how Black men perceive and enact fatherhood, influencing the extent and manner of their paternal engagement. The enduring representation of men primarily as financial providers constrains the generation and enactment of alternative modalities of fatherhood within families and society. This qualitative study explored how the everyday lived experiences of young Black men in Soweto, South Africa, influence their varied engagements with fatherhood as they navigate structural constraints to pursuing their ideal of fatherhood. An exploratory descriptive qualitative approach was employed. We conducted two sets of semi-structured interviews with 19 young Black men in …

Evaluating The Impact Of Self-Care Strategies Incorporated Into Undergraduate And Graduate Nursing Curricula: A Systematic Review, Roseanne Moody Fairchild, Salena Tully
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Background/Significance: Self-care is defined as a person’s capacity to partake in preventative measures promoting emotional, physical, and spiritual health to maintain one’s well-being. Registered nurses represent a majority of the healthcare workforce, and a 2017 report by American Nurses' Association found nurses have elevated risk for: a) being overweight, b) lacking adequate rest and sleep and, c) experiencing high levels of stress. As effects of the Covid-19 pandemic rapidly spread, substantial proportions of nurses reported heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and burnout. Impact of the pandemic has brought forth increased awareness regarding the need to encourage self-care practices among nurses …

Internal Quality Enhancement: Case Of A Uae Business School, Valentine Matthews
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
This paper presents a case study of a quality enhancement process of a small business school in the United Arab Emirates. The research explores this specific quality enhancement process with a focus on why it is implemented by the case institution and how it achieves quality improvement. The case quality enhancement process is an internal institutional approach that deviates from the Scottish Enhancement-Led Institutional Review approach. Articulation of the process is conducted from policy and practice. The articulation provides deeper and clearer understanding of the approach to quality enhancement, how it achieves quality improvements, and the leadership’s justifications for adopting …

Evaluating The Impact Of A Lend-Based Family Mentorship Program For Pre-Service Professionals, Matthew Bogenschutz, Sarah Lineberry, Jackie Robinson Brock, Flip Grey, Kathryn Flinn
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
Family-led pre-professional mentoring programs have been shown in past literature to have multiple positive outcomes, including better provider communication, increased sensitivity to the needs and contributions of family members in clinical settings, and better understanding of disability policy contexts among professionals. Yet there have been relatively few examples of exemplary programs that have developed successful models for family mentoring of pre-service professionals. Using qualitative evaluative data from one such program, a component of a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program, this study shares the experiences of both families and trainees. Common themes shared between these two groups …

Leading With Dignity: Addressing Occupational Stigma Through Inclusive Leadership Practices In Early Childhood Education, Elizabeth Terry
Doctorate in Education
Early childhood education (ECE) leaders navigate a historically undervalued and stigmatized profession, facing unique challenges in advocating for workforce recognition. This study examined how ECE leaders enact inclusive leadership practices despite systemic constraints. By exploring leaders' experiences across diverse organizational contexts, this research contributes to understanding professional dignity and leadership in caring professions. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with six early childhood leaders across diverse organizational contexts in Western Washington. Through thematic analysis, five themes emerged: (a) advocacy as an integrated leadership identity, (b) confronting occupational stigma and professional invisibility, (c) relational leadership practices as a foundation for inclusion, …

Community Of Open Hands: Reimagining The Classroom Through Beauty, Eunsub Cho

One of the boldest decisions that I have ever made as an educator was taking twenty-four middle school students on a camping trip at the end of the school year. We had made our way through a couple of months of astronomy and what better way to conclude the project than to celebrate our learning by gazing at the celestial bodies with our own eyes! My time in the Midwest should have informed me that this was a naive plan, as Michigan skies have a mind of their own. Despite detailed planning, it started drizzling by the time our tents …

Defining The Undefined: Reimagining The “Undue Hardship” Standard In Light Of Its Harmonious Interpretation, C. Sam D’Alba
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Part I of this Note provides background on the student loan crisis and the history of the nondischargeability of student loan debt. Part II of this Note examines the DOJ’s Guidance on litigating “undue hardship,” the intra-circuit criticism of the Brunner framework, and the need for harmony in understanding “undue hardship” in light of other authority governing student loans. Part III of this Note argues for a shift in the analysis of “undue hardship” based on practical guidance from the DOJ, the DOE, and the courts. This shift focuses on the subjectivities of each bankruptcy case and the need …

The Effect Of Debriefing Following A Computer-Based Low-Fidelity Simulation On The Self-Efficacy Of Health Professions Students: A Randomized Cross-Over Control Study, Matthew Mills, Enrico Gandolfi, Richard E. Ferdig, Kimberly Peer
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Simulations have been increasingly used in health science education to supplement clinical experience. There is evidence of the benefits of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) with debriefing, but HFS is costly and time-intensive to administer. Low-fidelity simulation (LFS) has been proposed as an alternative that is easier to scale and more cost-effective; however, the evidence surrounding its impact on students is mixed, possibly because debriefing is frequently omitted in LFS. Methods: A randomized experimental mixed methods cross-over control study was performed to evaluate the impact of a structured debriefing session following an interactive computer-based low-fidelity simulation on the self-efficacy and anxiety …

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
Objectives: Parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) is an empirically supported treatment (EST) initially developed to help parents manage difficult behaviors in preschoolers aged 2–7 years. Given its proven effectiveness across diverse populations, this meta-analysis aims to evaluate its effectiveness for Koreans using studies from 1991 to 2022. Methods: A total of 11 studies (n = 201 children; 224 parents) met the criteria for this meta-analysis. Results: A robust pooled effect size (μ= –0.31, 95% CI [–0.44, –0.17], p < .001) for PCIT across all study designs were found. Three-level random-effects meta-regressions further confirmed a significant pooled effect (μ = –0.81, 95% CI [–1.12, –0.50], p < .001), indicating that PCIT effects were consistently significant across studies. Subgroup analyses revealed significant reductions in externalizing behavior, parenting stress, and parent depression. Discussion and implications: This study contributes to the growing body of evidence on the cultural applicability of PCIT to Korean families

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study explores sex differences in the relationship between childhood cyberbullying victimization (CCBV) and young adult sexual assault experiences and the potential moderating roles of childhood parent monitoring and deviant peer association on the relationship. A total of 356 college students aged 19–25 in the US participated in the online survey. The results indicated that CCBV was associated with an increased risk of college sexual assault victimization for both males and females. A significant moderating effect of childhood parental monitoring and deviant peer association was found between the association between CCBV and college sexual assault victimization for female students only.

The Phoenix Trauma Response Model (Ptrm): An Integrative And Innovative Approach To Trauma Recovery And Growth, Latesha S. Holloman, Lauren B. Robins, Tammie Willis, Courtney V. Morris
Journal of Human Services Scholarship and Interprofessional Collaboration
Trauma is increasingly understood as a developmentally consequential experience that shapes identity, regulation, and relational functioning across the lifespan. Although trauma-informed care, resilience theory, posttraumatic growth, and narrative approaches have expanded understanding of recovery, few frameworks articulate a structured developmental progression that integrates prevention, intervention, and intergenerational transformation within a unified model. The Phoenix Trauma Response Model (PTRM) addresses this gap by introducing a cyclical, phase-based framework organized around four interrelated processes: Recognition, Reframing, Reclamation, and Replication of Strength. Central to the model is the construct of conversion potential, defined as the structured capacity to translate distress into purposeful …

Benevolence And Brutality: Evangelical Christianity & Child Welfare Social Work In Historical Perspective, Grace Pappas
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Evangelical Christians in the U.S. are a unique population with tremendous socio-political influence. While evangelicals have a unique interest in foster care and adoption, little social work scholarship explores intersections between evangelicalism and child welfare. Through an integrative literature review of 11 historical articles discussing evangelical Christianity and child welfare social work, I found the scholarship as a whole tended to emphasize evangelical Christians’ good intentions and deeds, while only limitedly discussing white supremacy, xenophobia, and settler colonialism. In light of these findings, I discuss potential implications and offer three invitations for further exploring this line of inquiry.

Experience And Response To Disability Stigma In South Asian Communities, Sudha Krishnan
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
This qualitative study explored the experiences of stigma and responses to stigmatization among 13 South Asian parents of children with extensive support needs (ESN). Existing research indicates that students with intellectual disabilities often experience negative emotions such as shame, powerlessness, and frustration due to their disability status. Cultural beliefs significantly influence the experiences of disabled children and their families, with stigma perceived and felt differently across cultural groups. Participants were interviewed about their family and cultural beliefs, perceptions of disability, and experiences with school collaborations and social stigma. Thematic analysis revealed that South Asian families with children with ESN faced …

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Children in Minnesota deserve safe, stable, and nurturing homes to grow, learn, and thrive. When family violence goes unaddressed, it harms not only individual children but also schools, communities, and the state’s long-term social and economic well-being. Protecting children reflects shared values of safety, dignity, equity, and collective responsibility. Investing in prevention and early intervention affirms Minnesota’s commitment to justice, strong families, and healthy futures for all children.

Bridging The Distance: Expanding Access To Mental Health Services In School, Griffin Gallagher, Arayah St John, Kaylie Svir
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
All students should have equitable access to mental health services in schools. In Minnesota, there has been an 11% increase in students experiencing long-term mental health challenges since 2016, and only 1 in 5 students receive the assistance they need. Students are experiencing a lack of access to mental health services in schools due to barriers of cost, transportation, shortage of support staff, and stigma. When mental health services are not provided in schools, this results in a decrease in school attendance, higher dropout rates, and negative school environments, affecting the long-term outcomes and needs of the child. Mental health …

Housing After Recovery: Expanding Access For Justice-Involved Individuals, Calvin Parzych, Melinda Gillen, Juliet Worayewaa, Mikayla Witter
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Every human being deserves access to safe, stable housing, especially individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. These individuals face significant barriers to stable housing, especially when their criminal records are considered by landlords. This can pose a risk to potential relapse, homelessness, and overall struggle to maintain recovery. Addressing housing discrimination for all members of society, especially justice-involved individuals, can aid in resolving public health and social justice issues that continue to be a long-standing problem.
