Irony Of The Golden Age Of Accounting Methodolgy, Tom Mouck Jan 1989

Irony Of The Golden Age Of Accounting Methodolgy, Tom Mouck

Accounting Historians Journal

Developments in accounting methodology during the 1960s are contrasted with concurrent developments in philosophy of science. The 1960s was a decade characterized by the widespread adoption of the scientific method in accounting methodology. The same decade was characterized by the degeneration of any semblance of consensus among philosophers of science regarding the nature of scientific inquiry. The irony of these incongruous but simultaneous developments is highlighted with the intent of weakening the current atmosphere of uncritical reverence for science and the scientific method in accounting research. A more contemporary (and more open) view of science : the postempiri-cist view : …

The Comparison Of Different Quality Of Working Life Among Countries From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jih-Ping Ouyang

Theses

The objective of this study is to focus on the factors underlying the prosperity of Taiwan from a cross-cultural perspective by utilizing Hofstede's (1980) theory and England's (1983) theory. It presents the scores on Hofstede's four indices (Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Individualism and Masculinity), using it to compare with countries, and touches upon England's eleven work goals.

Through research and analysis comparisons of the differences and similarities between Taiwan (Republic of China) and the other countries are found and based on these, the modifications can be made to improve the current managerial pattern. For the past few years, there has …

Prehistoric Accounting And The Problem Of Representation: On Recent Archeological Evidence Of The Middle-East From 8000 B.C. To 3000 B.C., Richard Mattessich

Accounting Historians Journal

Recent archeological research offers revolutionary insight about the precursor of abstract counting and pictographic as well as ideographic writing. This precursor was a data processing system in which simple (and later complex) clay tokens of various shapes were aggregated in hollow clay receptacles or envelopes (and later sealed string systems) to represent symbolically assets and economic transactions. Scores of such tokens (the recent explanation of which is due to Prof. Schmandt-Besserat) were found by archeologists all over the Fertile Crescent in layers belonging to the time between 8000 B.C. to 3100 B.C. : after this date cuneiform clay tablets emerged.

A Commentary On Unicorns And Efficiency, Roger A. Lohmann Jul 1986

A Commentary On Unicorns And Efficiency, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The issue of efficiency in human services parallels in many respects the principle that unicorns should receive fair treatment. People have paid lip service to the idea that human services should be delivered efficiently for most of the last century. Yet, in all of that time there has not been a single study published showing clearly whether a particular instance of service delivery was, or was not, efficient. The underlying issues involved in defining and measuring efficient service delivery are complex and difficult and administrators, boards and other stakeholders have typically done little more than pay lip service to the idea.

Financial Reporting In The Early Years Of The East India Company, Vahe Baladouni Jan 1986

Financial Reporting In The Early Years Of The East India Company, Vahe Baladouni

Accounting Historians Journal

The first archival period (1600-1663) of the (English) East India Company is marked by an absence of accounting materials. A small number of financial statements have escaped peril, however, and found their way to the India Office Library and Records in London. Of these, two are of singular interest. Along with related Company minutes, these statements are analyzed and interpreted in this paper. They shed some light on the reporting practices and concepts of the early years of the incorporated joint-stock company.

Classical Model Of Control In The Accounting Literature, Lee D. Parker Jan 1986

Classical Model Of Control In The Accounting Literature, Lee D. Parker

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper outlines a classical management model of control based upon concepts identified in the writings of Frederick Taylor and Henry Fayol. The classical model's constituent concepts are found to be replicated in early accounting literature. The accounting model persisted right through the 1970s with only one conceptual change that reflected a concept discussed by Fayol. A number of factors which may have influenced the accounting model's replication of the classical management model are then considered. These include the linguistic derivation of the term "budget", historical approaches to budgeting by governments, the scientific and efficiency orientation of accountants in the …

Global Competition For Environmental Markets - The Case Of The Water-Pollution Control Equipment Industry, Andrew C. Gross Jan 1986

Global Competition For Environmental Markets - The Case Of The Water-Pollution Control Equipment Industry, Andrew C. Gross

Marketing

Describes how pollution control spending around the world is set to increase from $70 billion (1979) to $115 billion in 1990 in real terms. Expands on the theory that cleaning up - or preventing mistakes - in the environment makes for financial and healthwise good sense. Posits that cleaner air leads to fewer respiratory problems and cleaner water in most areas of manufacturing results in lower fuel use. Focuses on trade, end use competitive modes and marketing patterns regarding water pollution control equipment (WPCE). States that WPCE shipments world wide are projected to rise from $3.3 billion in 1979 to …

in this issue. . .

Playing JOHN C. BURNHAM's new parlor game, "Who Is Now Great?” unexpectedly forms a negative consensus: the great men and women, like the dinosaurs, seem to belong to an earlier time, not to our own. The author wonders why, and shares his thoughts on the past, present, and future of greatness. Professor of History at The Ohio State University, with a scholarly interest in the history of psychiatry and American medical and social history, Burnham' s most recent book is on the psychoanalyst and physician Jelliffe.

Modern Mesopotamian Accounting, Douglas Garbutt

Accounting Historians Notebook

All accounting historians know that the Ancient Mesopotamian were the first bookkeepers, but little attention has been paid to more recent history. In 1915-1917, the colorful character of Harry St. John Bridger Philby played a significant part in the importation of British approaches to accounting in the southern part of Mesopotamia, which at that time began to adopt the Arab name for the Country, Allraq.
