Toward A Parsimonious Architecture For Intelligent Organizational Information Systems, Robert P. Minch
Toward A Parsimonious Architecture For Intelligent Organizational Information Systems, Robert P. Minch
IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
An architecture for intelligent organizational information systems is proposed which consists of three functions: processing, communicating, and memory--any or all of which may be performed by either humans or computers. Processing occurs on a set of communicating processors with access to memory, and is defined as having three sub-functions: sensing, interpreting, and acting. The communicating and memory functions are seen to have certain basic characteristics whether described in terms from human organization or computer organization literature. The architecture may prove a useful guide for future research which begins to consider intelligent organizational information systems with increasingly synergistic roles played by …

The Commons: A Multidisciplinary Approach To Nonprofit Organization, Voluntary Action And Philanthropy, Roger A. Lohmann
The Commons: A Multidisciplinary Approach To Nonprofit Organization, Voluntary Action And Philanthropy, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The task of identifying nonprofit organizations, voluntary action and philanthropy as the principal constituents of a single "sector" within the larger economy, society and polity has been a central challenge for the multidisciplinary paradigm which seems to be emerging in this field. The concepts of the commons and common goods are presented as concepts with important multi-disciplinary implications. The commons is characterized by uncoerced participation, shared purposes and resources, mutuality and fairness and the derivative concept of common goods, as desirable ends which are universal and indivisible within a commons but not necessarily beyond. Taken together, commons and common goods …

Technology Exports From A Small, Very Open Nic: The Case Of Singapore, Eng Fong Pang, Hal Hill
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper examines the nature, composition and determinants of Singapore's early stage technology exports. The pattern of these exports reflects the quite unique mix of policy and institutional features in Singapore's environment - remarkably high growth, very open economy, rapid structural change, particularly intense economic relations with neighboring Southeast Asian nations, and a pervasive and paternalistic state role. The bases of Singapore's comparative advantage in these service exports are identified, and some general implications from its experience are analyzed.

The Repertory Of Social Care Of The Elderly, Roger A. Lohmann
The Repertory Of Social Care Of The Elderly, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper is an analysis of aspects of the emergence of a repertory of social care services for the elderly from the vantage point of the common theory of voluntary action. One facet of that theory, labeled here as endowment theory, is an emerging rational choice model of the praxeological implications of voluntary action within the pragmatic problem-solving tradition. Three terms – endowment, repertory and commons – are presented in the paper as terms whose conventional meanings contain previously undisclosed connotations relevant to a fuller understanding of voluntary action.

Placement And Frequency Of Powerless Talk And Impression Formation, Craig E. Johnson, Larry Vinson
Placement And Frequency Of Powerless Talk And Impression Formation, Craig E. Johnson, Larry Vinson
Faculty Publications - College of Business
Study One examined the influence of initial use of hesitations and hedges on evaluations of witnesses and their persuasiveness in a budget hearing context. Results indicate that the negative attributions generated by the use of powerless language cannot be overcome by subsequent use of powerful talk. Study Two examined the relationship between the frequency of powerless language use and impression formation. For award/character and dyhamism a perceptual threshold appeared to operate. The results of both studies suggest that auditors are very sensitive to the influence of powerless talk in formal settings.

The Effects Of An Instructor's Use Of Hesitation Forms On Student Ratings Of Quality, Recommendations To Hire, And Lecture Listening, Craig E. Johnson, Larry Vinson, Michael Hackman, Tom Hardin
Faculty Publications - College of Business
This study examined the impact of instructor use of hesitation forms ("uh," "ah," "um," and "well") in an initial encounter with the students on three measures of teaching effectiveness: students ratings of teacher quality, student recommendations to hire, and lecture listening. The instruction of any amount of hesitant speech significantly lowered instructor effectiveness as measured by each dependent variable. Generally, the use of higher frequencies of hesitation forms was more damaging than the use of lower frequencies. The findings of this study suggest that the use of other forms of powerless language may also detract from the teacher effectiveness.

Research Issues Involving Hypertext In Decision Support Systems, Robert P. Minch
IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The term hypertext describes a computerized system which allows the user to browse through a network of nodes, each of which is commonly a collection of text but which may be quantitative models or other entities. A review o f DSS research and applications frameworks in the literature reveals several areas where further research may be valuable in identifying the usefulness and appropriate role of hypertext in DSS. These issues involve user characteristics, decision and problem characteristics, situational and organizational factors, and technological factors. Some areas which appear to be worthy of further investigation include hypertext's support of the human …

Canada's Accounting Elite: 1880-1930, Alan John Richardson
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper provides an analysis of elite accounting practitioners during the formative years of the Canadian accounting profession (1880-1930). The social characteristics of this group in comparison with the Canadian population and the links between the accounting elite and other elite groups in society are used to evaluate the extent to which the profession achieved democratic ideals of access and social mobility for all members of society. The operation of the accounting profession as a democratic institution is argued to be an important aspect of the profession's claim to serve the public interest.
