The Impact Of River Basin Development Authorities On Nigerian Agriculture: A Case Study Of Niger River Basin Development Authority, E. D. Balogun, E. U. Ukeje
Economic and Financial Review
The paper traced the history of water resource development in Nigeria, and assessed the impact of the Niger River Basin Development Authority (NRBDA) on crop production in the region. The analysis of available data showed that although the NRBDA's activities resulted in improvements in crop yields, and farm incomes of beneficiaries, the impact on regional output and area cultivated was marginal since it accrued to only very few farmers. Moreover, the cost of generating such increments was outrageously high when compared to the incremental costs incurred by alternative development institutions in respect of similar activities. The NRBDA was not without …

Applications And Evaluation Criteria For Robotic Systems, Brijan Shirish Badshah
Applications And Evaluation Criteria For Robotic Systems, Brijan Shirish Badshah
Theses
The robot industry is one of the fastest growing industries. In almost every area of manufacturing, robots are being considered for one or more tasks, but the success of any commercial industrial undertaking has to be measured in terms of financial performance.
To help practitioners in the manufacturing area, an economic analysis and investment appraisal technique for robotic systems is developed, especially to assist managers in making the crucial decision about utilizing an industrial robot. An interactive microcomputer program is developed which performs the economic analysis for cost justification and helps managers to decide whether the implementation of a robot …
Technology Transfer Between Developed And Developing Countries, Tenny Oghogho Ogbomo
Technology Transfer Between Developed And Developing Countries, Tenny Oghogho Ogbomo
Theses
The problems arising from technology transfer, in general, are not new. The problems of the East-West technology transfer, for example, are based on the risk that such transfers will enhance the military capability, or at least the military potential, of the trading partner. In the case of United States trade with the Soviet Union, it can be said that any accretion in the Soviet military capacity weighs against the United States in an overall world-wide balance of power. The restrictions and/or prohibition of such transfer of technology are problems themselves.
The North-South technology transfer, in other words, the technology transfer …
Emergency Stop Devices And The Human Factors Of Response, Robert Paul Guinter
Emergency Stop Devices And The Human Factors Of Response, Robert Paul Guinter
Theses
The manual emergency stop Was recognized as an im- portant aspect of machine control very early during the history of powered mechanical systems. The purpose, of course, was to allow machinery to be quickly stepped during emergencies to minimize equipment damage and/or personal injury. Today, however, the emphasis of control is being shifted more and more toward totally automatic systems. Often, the importance of manual emergency stopping and override of these systems is lost in the zeal to perfect automatic controls. The problem that evolves is how and when to provide an efficient human-machine interface to allow a manual emergency …

Private Human Services In Welfare Society, Roger A. Lohmann
Private Human Services In Welfare Society, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper is an effort to propose a moderately optimistic future for the personal care sector of human services. It is proposed that the best available future scenario for personal care services between now and the year 2019 is to concentrate on privatization of service delivery on a small-scale basis. Government, in this model should be limited largely to three roles: 1) source of venture capital; 2) regulation of service delivery; and 3) income maintenance for the poorest populations. In this future, the main burden of personal care services will be carried by the private sector. Dramatic improvements in the …

Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton
Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Satellite remote sensing has the capacity to aid the three major components of a fishery: research, management, and the fishing industry. An evaluation of the potential of satellite-derived data to the fishery is based upon six case studies which are presented as evidence of the capabilities of satellite-borne sensors. Peripheral applications pertaining to the marine environment and possible applications for the future are reviewed. Three basic categories of remote sensing programs related to the fishery are defined: one to test the applicability of the technology to the field of fisheries; another to employ the technology to fisheries research; and a …

Shaker Accounting Records At Pleasant Hill: 1830-1850, Larry Kreiser, Philip N. Dare
Accounting Historians Journal
Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky was the third largest of nineteen Shaker communities which existed in eight states during the nineteenth century. Many of the accounting records used by the Pleasant Hill Shakers are still in existence. An analysis of these records indicates that the same care and attention to detail which came to be associated with the Pleasant Hill Shakers in agriculture, mechanics, and architecture is also evident in their accounting records.

Contribution To A Concept Of Behavioral Abnormality In Farm Animals Under Confinement, U. A. Luescher, J. F. Hurnik
Agribusiness Collection
Farm animals housed in close confinement often engage in activities that do not occur with animals maintained in traditional and more complex environments. Many of these activities consist of species-typical motor patterns directed towards unsuited or inappropriate objects, or performed as vacuum activities. For example, piglets fed from a trough from day 2 to day 21 after parturition display much nosing. of penmates and ear sucking (DeBoer and Hurnik 1984). Similarly, confined veal calves in crates may lick their pelage excessively, or, when housed in groups, may suck the naval area of penmates; laying hens and broilers often engage in …
Providing Humane Stewardship For Wildlife: The Case Against Sport Hunting, John W. Grandy
Providing Humane Stewardship For Wildlife: The Case Against Sport Hunting, John W. Grandy
Hunting Collection
Sport hunting has no place on the National Wildlife Refuges of this nation. To even consider it is an affront to the concept of a Refuge, the right of wild animals to safe haven, and the wishes of society The question of sport hunting in society at large is slightly more complex because society, its thoughts and values, are evolving. Thankfully, we are moving more and more to a view that wildlife should be treated with the same dignity, respect, and freedom from avoidable cruelty that we would ask for ourselves. That process can be moved miles ahead if we …
The Case For Intensive Farming Of Food Animals, Stanley E. Curtis
The Case For Intensive Farming Of Food Animals, Stanley E. Curtis
Agribusiness Collection
Our world is still a hungry place. At the same time, the number of people worldwide who grow food for themselves continues to dwindle. Most U.S. citizens have never set foot on a farm or harvested one mouthful-let alone a lifetime's worth-of daily bread. Yet our farmlands and climates and our agricultural and food industries are this nation's ultimate resources. By increasing productivity, our farmers and the scientific and business endeavors that support our nation's food production, processing, and distribution have proved to be able and reliable husbands of these precious resources. But make no mistake: The challenge to increase …

The Case Against Intensive Farming Of Food Animals, Linda D. Mickley, Michael W. Fox
Agribusiness Collection
The well-being of American agriculture is indeed a complex subject, fraught with interrelationships, predictions, recriminations, and at times, high emotionalism. In this paper, we will be concentrating on several aspects of the entire picture that we feel are fundamental to the issue of animal welfare in modern agriculture. First, we will take a brief look at two farm animal species maintained in very restrictive systems, that is, battery-caged laying hens and tethered and/or crated brood sows.
Next, the human costs in terms of occupational diseases and consumer health hazards will be considered. Finally, some humane alternatives to the factory systems …
Horsebreakers, Tamers, And Trainers: An Historical, Psychological, And Social Review, Sharon E. Cregier
Horsebreakers, Tamers, And Trainers: An Historical, Psychological, And Social Review, Sharon E. Cregier
Equines Collection
To my knowledge, there has been no organized synthesis describing the historical development of horse handling, management, lore, and training. This discussion offers, in capsule form, some of the historical, psychological, and social considerations which might be taken into account when evaluating horse-handling skills.
First, I would like to describe the natures of the emotional and psychological bonds between man and horse. I will also look at the consequences of various types of bonding on horsemanship or management. We can increase our understanding of the role of the horse in our history and lives by thus seeing how the animal …

The Psychology And Ethics Of Humane Equine Treatment, Sharon E. Cregier
Equines Collection
The effect on animals of man-induced stressors, such as the disruption of herd bonds, stabling, medication procedures and the like, has been the subject of increasing investigation. Obvious and shocking abuses against animals, bullfighting, certain training practices in the racehorse industry, and rodeo events such as wild horse races, steerbusting or calf-roping, are readily recognized and have, in some instances been stopped. (Steerbusting refers to roping, from horseback, of running cattle in such a manner as to flip the animal backward or jerk it down, knocking the wind out of the animal and occasionally breaking ribs, vertebrae, and neck.)
However, …

Atrophic Rhinitis In Pigs, A R. Mercy
Atrophic Rhinitis In Pigs, A R. Mercy
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Severe atrophic rhinitis in pigs recurred recently in Australia after an apparent absence of some 20 years. The first of these recent cases occurred in a Westerm Australian herd in late 1984 and since then six other local herds have reported the disease. Severe atrophic rhinitis has also been seen recently in South Australia.
Atrophic rhinitis is a complex disease which causes degeneration of the nasal cavity, twisting of the snout and sometimes occasional bleeding from the nose.
It occurs only in pigs and severely affected animals may have a slower growth rate.
