A C-Based Interactive Fms Decision Support Software For Capacity Planning, Layout Design, And Shop Floor Control, Chin-Yun A. Wu Jan 1987

A C-Based Interactive Fms Decision Support Software For Capacity Planning, Layout Design, And Shop Floor Control, Chin-Yun A. Wu

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) has the merits of both job shop production and mass production -- flexibility at low variable production cost. However, FMSs' are very expensive to install and are very complex to operate. This thesis creatively bridged three decision tools (simulation, layout planning, and a queueing network model) for FKS capacity planning, layout design, and shop floor control. The research developed an interactive, user-friendly decision support software called FMSDS to assist decision makers in FMS design, planning, and operation. The cornerstones of FMSDS consist of three major decision tools: a queueing-network model, a simulation package, and layout …

The Social Economics Of Frank H. Knight, J. Patrick Raines Jan 1987

The Social Economics Of Frank H. Knight, J. Patrick Raines

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Frank Hyneman Knight is well known for rehabilitating neoclassical economics with his 1924 critique of Pigouvian welfare economics. In Knight's thirty years at the University of Chicago, he thoroughly developed the notion that economic freedom and market competition are essential to maximize society's welfare. However, Knight's belief in the superiority of the market mechanism does not preclude serious concern about issues of social justice and reform.

This study seeks to establish Frank H. Knight's contributions to social economics. Elements of Knight's work will be compared to commonly recognized characteristics of a social economist. Knight's prominence in the discipline of economics …

Prehistoric Accounting And The Problem Of Representation: On Recent Archeological Evidence Of The Middle-East From 8000 B.C. To 3000 B.C., Richard Mattessich Jan 1987

Prehistoric Accounting And The Problem Of Representation: On Recent Archeological Evidence Of The Middle-East From 8000 B.C. To 3000 B.C., Richard Mattessich

Accounting Historians Journal

Recent archeological research offers revolutionary insight about the precursor of abstract counting and pictographic as well as ideographic writing. This precursor was a data processing system in which simple (and later complex) clay tokens of various shapes were aggregated in hollow clay receptacles or envelopes (and later sealed string systems) to represent symbolically assets and economic transactions. Scores of such tokens (the recent explanation of which is due to Prof. Schmandt-Besserat) were found by archeologists all over the Fertile Crescent in layers belonging to the time between 8000 B.C. to 3100 B.C. : after this date cuneiform clay tablets emerged.

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper Jan 1987

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of business ethics and the impact gender has upon the ethical decisions of corporate middle management .

Research has attributed the lack of ethics in businessmen to a decline in moral standards . Because this condition seems to be the rule rather than the exception, it becomes necessary to focus more clearly on the corporate system and the moral development of the individuals who make up this system.

Over the years moral development has been the subject of controversy as many theorists have developed their own ideas as to why people behave morally. …

On Organizing Mis Knowledge, Suzanne Robertson, Arnold Reisman Jan 1987

On Organizing Mis Knowledge, Suzanne Robertson, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Perusal of management information systems (MIS) literature or attendance at conferences points out the discipline's diversity and the need for students, as well as professors to have a larger frame of reference for understanding MIS research. This paper utilizes two MIS research frameworks, one proposed by Ives, Hamilton and Davis and the other by Vogel and Wetherbe, to demonstrate the role of integrative thought in understanding and guiding MIS research. A literature review is used to support the claim that benefits to recall, more effective hypothesis generation, more cost effective allocation of research resources and better interdisciplinary communication can result …

Determinants Of Bilateral Trade Flows, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Robert T. Green Oct 1986

Determinants Of Bilateral Trade Flows, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Robert T. Green

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

What factors influence the level of trade flows that occur between nations? Past studies have answered this question primarily in terms of distance and economic size. The present study considers additional variables as potential determinants of trade relations between nations. Also, trade flows are analyzed by the type of products being exported and imported. The findings show that several additional variables are significant determinants of the level of bilateral trade relations between nations. In addition, it is found that models of trade flows are more appropriate for manufactured goods than they are for basic commodities.
