Some Effects Of Solid Rocket Motor Fuel Exhausts On Avian Embryos, Lindsey Elliott Deguehery

Fertile White Leghorn (Gallus gallus) and Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus) were subjected to 15 min exposures produced by burning solid rocket motor (SRM) fuel. Comparative mortality data were collected. Chicken eggs were further used to study the effects of exposure on water relations and blood gas parameters. Chicken embryos exposed once on day 19 or incubation demonstrated and LD50 of 204 ppm; the LD50 for quail embryos was 175 ppm. When mortality was regressed on the final exposure concentration, chicken and quail embryos exposed on days 12 and 19 showed LD50's of 127 and 86 ppm respectively, and embryos exposed …

The present is an attempt to show the pattern of innervation, or neuronal geometry, of various nerves leading to their respective ganglia (Fig. 1) and to obtain visualization of the finest terminal branches. A description of the cellular arrangement of a segmental ganglion would be of value in better understanding the results obtained when using the axonal iontophoresis method applied to the third through seventh ventral nerve cord ganglia. We describe the analogy between the theory of natural selection on sex ratio in newborn gonochores (which will not change sex) and on the age of sex change in sequential hermaphrodites (which are all born into one sex and change to the other later on). We also discuss the conditions under which natural selection favors sequential hermaphrodites over gonochores and vice versa. We show that, in a nearly stable population of nearly constant age composition, selection favors a rare mutant if it increases the prospective reproduction of its newborn bearers that are (or while they are) members of one sex …

Four eastern Kansas populations of the prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster were live trapped from 1970—73 to gain insight into the population regulation of this species. All four populations exhibited a 2—yr cycle in numbers with peak densities generally occurring in June 1972. Peak densities were followed by a decline in numbers, a recovery, and a population crash in spring 1973. Reproductive parameters changed dramatically as density rose and fell. The summer breeding season in the crash year of 1973 was shortened by at least 3 mo. A reduction in breeding activity occurred during the summer of every year of the …

Exposure of freshly shed maize pollen to allyl alcohol vapors allows selective fertilization by mutant alcohol-dehydrogenase-negative grains. Wild-type pollen grains are killed by the enzymatic conversion of allyl alcohol to the highly toxic acrylaldehyde.

Anatomical Observations On Floating Leaves, Robert B. Kaul

An examination of 24 genera of aquatic plants having floating leaves and leaf-like thalli has been made. Functional stomata occur on the adaxial sides of floating leaves of angiosperms and some ferns, and in some floating leaves there are stomata on the abaxial surface as well. Most floating leaves have prominently chambered mesophyll, and in some instances the chambers are locally enlarged and form buoys.

The boundaries of the project encompass sections of North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, East Las Vegas and areas along Las Vegas Wash extending to its drainage point in Las Vegas Bay in Lake Mead. Therefore, it encompasses a wide array of ecological situations and landscapes ranging from essentially natural to various stages of urban development.

The incorporation of phosphoproteins and phenol-bound proteins into the cuticle of Periplaneta americana was analyzed. Radioactive monosodium phosphate was injected into newly ecdysed cockroaches. Incorporation into haemolymph proteins as well as tanned cuticle was observed. Phosphoproteins were observed to be combined with the cuticle to a greater extent than monosodium phosphate. This suggests that phosphate is being incorporated into the cuticle more readily than monosodium phosphate. The relevance of these observations is discussed in light of phosphate being a possible crosslinking agent between chitin and cuticle protein.

The previous cytological and electrophysiological work suggests that the optic tectum matures during metamorphic climax. It was the aim of the present work to attempt to compare pre metamorphic (Stage XII) larval and post metamorphic juvenile, Rana catesbeiana, using a photostimulated evoked electroencephalographic (E.E.G.) response in the optic tectum and correlate that with tissue studies to verify neurophysiological maturation of the optic tectum.

The purpose of this study was to examine and evaluate the K-E-S group from this community with respect to distribution in clinical materials, detailed individual biochemical characteristics, and antibiogram patterns using the Bauer-Kirby disc technique, and compare these findings with those of other investigators from other geographic locations. As far as can be determined, this is the only study of its kind on the West Coast of the United States.

This study of mammals of the Bull Run Planning Unit has a dual character. First, mammals of special scientific or natural history interest such as threatened or endangered species were sought. This was in conjunction with a Mt. Hood Bull Run Planning Unit. Second, a zoogeographical study of mammals of the Bull Run was performed. Abundance and distributional data was recorded for each species observed. This data was related to availability to moisture as indicated by plant associations trapped. Coyote food habits were ascertained by identifying the undigested material in 1143 scats collected at monthly intervals from specific road transects on the USERDA Hanford Reservation in Washington from 1974 to 1976. Tracks at artificially established scent posts along the principal transect provided evidence that the scats were left by coyotes and not bobcats or badgers. On the basin plain (150m elevation) where the Aptemisia tpidentata/Poa sandbepgii Association predominates, the average monthly percent occurrences in the 491 scats collected in 1975 2 were pocket mouse 60, leporid 39, pocket gopher 12, grasshopper 12, fruit 10, cricetine mice 7, darkling beetle …

The following research was undertaken to monitor a glucocorticoid corticosterone to determine whether or not a reduction in glucocorticoids occurs during the critical period of imprinting behavior. Two groups of domestic chicks (Schaffer white Leghorns) were incubated, hatched and maintained under brooding conditions prior to imprinting procedures. Chicks were first divided into seven age groups, four hour intervals, beginning at hatching. The critical period of imprinting behavior was established with Group I. Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum

Eighteen morphological features were measured for 103 species of insectivorous bats found throughout North America. These characters were standardized to a mean of zero and a standard deviation of unity. Using these morphological characters, thirty-one distinct faunas, ranging from a Boreal Forest fauna with three species to a Wet Tropical fauna with 50 species, were analyzed in an 18-dimensional mathematical hyperspace with the numerical taxonomic techniques of distance, correlation and principal components.

The results show that tropical faunas occupy a greater morphological hypervolume than temperate-zone faunas. Morphological packing is not greater in tropical faunas, and it appears that a limiting …

The black-tailed prairie dog, Cynomys ludovicianus, was described by the early naturalists and explorers as inhabiting an area ranging from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Although their habitat varies in environmental extremes, little is known of the physiological responses of this species. Most investigations concerning them have dealt with their possible role as disease vectors, their effects on agriculture and livestock management, and the structure of their social organization. NADP⁺-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol:NADP⁺:oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.2.) was partially purified from a cell-free extract of Phycomyces blakesleeanus (+ mating type, Vanderbilt strain). The fungus was grown in shake cultures containing glucose-asparagine broth, and crude cull-free enzyme extracts were prepared. The crude enzyme extracts were partially purified by a combination of ammonium sulfate precipitations and heat precipitation. Purification resulted in a 40;5 recovery of the enzyme with an increase in specific activity from 0.64 units per milligram of protein to 0.25 units per milligram. The partially-purified enzyme extracts were used to determine the kinetic properties and substrate specificity …

Asymmetric RNA was synthesized in vitro from SV4O form I DNA using Escherichia coli DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Using this RNA, sheared ³²P-SV4O DNA was separated into (+) and (-) DNA strands. (+) and (-) DNA was shown to be complementary strands of SV4O DNA. The separated strands were hybridized to nuclear, informosome, and polysome RNAs extracted at different times in the lytic infection, and to similar RNAs from transformed cells. Further, the size of the RNAs hybridizing to (+) and (-) DNAs was determined by sucrose gradient sedimentation. The results showed:

The increase in growth of Desulfovibrio vulgaris NCIB 8303 in a basal medium containing either 0.1M lactate, 0.1M pyruvate or 0.1M formate was proportional to the energy derived by substrate oxidation. Parameters of growth included OD₅₈₀, counts of viable cells, mean generation time, maximum cell density and molar growth yield. Pyruvate stimulated the largest amount of growth by all parameters except the generation time which equalled that measured for growth on lactate. Lactate produced intermediate levels of growth and formate the least amount. Minimal growth occurred when the basal medium had no intermediate energy source. Growth on the …

Six territories of Williamson's Sapsuckers (Sphyrapicus thyroideus) and eight of Red-naped Sapsuckers (S. varius nuchalis) were mapped and sampled with a line-strip vegetation sampling technique; these data were subjected to discriminant function and 1·rinciple components analyses to investigate similarities and differences letween territories of the two species.

Interspecific overlap in territorial characteristics is great; differences occur primarily in the number of dead trees, and to a lesser extent in the degree of clumping of aspens (Populus tremuloides); S. Thyroideus tends to nest in areas where aspens are more clumped.
