Analysis Of Chromatin Accessibility Changes In Endothelial Cells Exposed To Plastic Contaminants, Mikhail Y. Salnikov, Carly Boye, David B. Witonsky, Gabrielle Garlicki, Adnan Alazizi, Francesca Luca, Roger Pique-Regi
Medical Student Research Symposium
Degradation products from everyday plastic products are known to bioaccumulate and have also been shown to contaminate drinking water and food sources. BPA and phthalates are endocrine disrupting chemicals and plastic components that have previously been associated with endothelial cell dysfunction, atherosclerotic and other adverse cardiovascular events. However, there is a limited understanding of the mechanisms underlying these associations, such as genome-wide chromatin accessibility changes in endothelial cells exposed to these compounds. The purpose of this study is to explore genome-wide changes in chromatin accessibility associated with plastic exposure, as well as the discovery of transcription factor binding motifs dysregulated …
Characterizing Kmt2d In Endometrial Cancer, Katherine R. Davanzo
Characterizing Kmt2d In Endometrial Cancer, Katherine R. Davanzo
Medical Student Research Symposium
Endometrial cancer is rising in incidence in the United States, notably among premenopausal women. This increase and the trend of delayed childbearing warrant the need for further advancement in fertility-sparing treatment for endometrial cancer. A gene left widely unexplored in its possible clinical utility as a target for fertility-sparing treatment is KMT2D, a lysine-specific methyltransferase and tumor suppressor. Preliminary gene set enrichment analysis on a 12Z endometriotic epithelial cell line identified TIMP3 as a gene that is possibly regulated by KMT2D expression. TIMP3 encodes an irreversible inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a well-recognized class of proteins as contributing to the …

Skin Of Color Representation In Biologic Advertisements For Psoriasis And Psoriatic Arthritis, Grace Doakes, Sydney Martin, Melissa Baithey, Julia Riley, Kelsey Flood, Rithu Srikantha
Medical Student Research Symposium
Skin of color (SoC) patients with psoriasis experience more severe disease, lower quality of life, and increased psoriasis-related hospitalizations compared to non-SoC counterparts (1-2). SoC patients with psoriasis demonstrate decreased familiarity with biologic medications (3-4) , which could lead to undertreatment and greater disease burden. In light of previous findings indicating inadequate SoC representation in dermatologic direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising, we compared skin tone representation in patient-facing materials for 13 biologics FDA-approved for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) on pharmaceutical DTC advertising websites from July 20, 2023 to August 20, 2023. Images of 331 people, excluding videos, were analyzed via Fitzpatrick …

Background: CMTR1 (cap methyltransferase 1), a key nuclear mRNA cap methyltransferase, catalyzes 2'-O-methylation of the first transcribed nucleotide, a critical step in mRNA cap formation. Previous studies have implicated CMTR1 in embryonic stem cell differentiation and immune responses during viral infection; however, its role in cancer biology remains largely unexplored. This study aims to elucidate CMTR1's function in cancer progression and evaluate its potential as a novel therapeutic target across multiple cancer types.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive multi-omics analysis of CMTR1 across various human cancers using TCGA and CPTAC datasets. Functional studies were performed using CRISPR-mediated knockout and …

Implications Of Glyphosate-Based Herbicides On The Female Reproductive System And Reproductive Outcomes, Alexandra Stone, Olivia G. Camp Ms, David Bai Md, Awoniyi Awonuga, Husam M. Abu-Soud
Medical Student Research Symposium
Background
Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the most widely used herbicides in the United States, accounting for 19% of estimated global use. Although the Environmental Protection Agency has reaffirmed that the active ingredient glyphosate (GLY) is safe for humans, recent studies on exposure have suggested an association with cancer, metabolic disorders, endocrine disruption and infertility, and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Recently, we have shown that GLY exposure deteriorates metaphase II oocyte quality through zinc deficiency, ROS accumulation, and chromosome disruption. In this work, we review the mechanisms of GLY toxicity in the female reproductive tract and discuss the potential clinical implications …

Androgen Hormones Regulate The Production On The Pain-Inducing Inflammatory Molecule Il-1Β In A Mouse Model Of Inflammatory Pain, Hariharan Ramakrishnan, Geoffroy Laumet, Jaewon Sim
Medical Student Research Symposium
Chronic pain prevalence varies between sexes with a higher incidence and duration reported in women compared to men. This disparity suggests that biological factors, such as sexual hormones, may influence pain perception and development. Among the key players in pain mechanisms, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), an inflammatory molecule, has been identified to activate neurons involved in pain sensation. This study explores the hypothesis that sexual hormones, particularly androgens, regulate IL-1β production in inflamed tissues, thereby influencing pain responses. To investigate this, we induced inflammatory pain in male and female mice using Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA), injected into the hind paw. To …

Shellfish Regulation: Conservation And Discrimination, Maine Law Review
Shellfish Regulation: Conservation And Discrimination, Maine Law Review
Maine Law Review
The economy of many coastal states depends heavily upon the shellfish industry. Shellfish such as lobsters and clams are an especially important marine resource for these states. In recent years, however, the supply of shellfish has experienced substantial declines. State laws that permit the harvesting of lobsters prior to sexual maturity, for example, have made the lobster industry dependent on the yearly additions to the lobster supply. The increasing demands for shellfish as well as the pollution of areas such as coastal clamflats have also contributed to the serious depletion of the shellfish resources in many areas. Despite the possible …
Boundary Delimitation In The Economic Zone: The Gulf Of Maine Dispute, Maine Law Review
Boundary Delimitation In The Economic Zone: The Gulf Of Maine Dispute, Maine Law Review
Maine Law Review
In an ideal world of abundant natural resources, homogeneously distributed among nations, the issue of marine boundary delimitation would have little significance within the international community. However, the realities of randomly concentrated and limited resources, complicated by the political geography of the oceans, have made maritime boundary delimitation a crucial international issue. In a world of more than 130 coastal nations, the determination of standards for allocation of living and non-living ocean resources within the fertile offshore areas has become an issue of widespread economic importance. Nonetheless, the international community has developed few concrete and specific rules for marine boundary …
The Fishery Conservation And Management Act Of 1976: State Regulation Of Fishing Beyond The Territorial Sea, Maine Law Review
The Fishery Conservation And Management Act Of 1976: State Regulation Of Fishing Beyond The Territorial Sea, Maine Law Review
Maine Law Review
Historically, international law has recognized the sovereignty of coastal nations within the three-mile contiguous territorial sea. Although modem international practice has expanded the breadth of the territorial sea to twelve miles or more, the traditional three-mile zone retains a special significance within the scheme of domestic United States marine law. Under the federal scheme of marine resource jurisdiction, authority within the three-mile zone has been allocated to the coastal states while the federal government has exercised near-exclusive jurisdiction over marine zones seaward of the territorial sea boundary. However, this bifurcated jurisdiction scheme has failed to provide effective conservation and management …

Ice cream,a complex whipped and aerated colloidal system, requires an appropriate degree of fat globule destabilization during its production to form a specific structure.Small -molecule emulsifiers can regulate the degree of fat destabilization by adsorbing onto the fat globule surface, reducing surface tension, and competing with proteins for positions at the oil -water interface. At the same time, they can promote the dispersion of fat particles or form a protective film at the oil -water interface, thereby influencing fat crystallization. Moreover, small -molecule emulsifiers can act as template molecules, guiding the assembly of fats into various specific shapes, such as spherical,rod-like,and lamellar forms, and adjusting the size and morphology of fat …
