Rotifers In Lake Itasca, Judy Helgen

Rotifers were collected from both the Littoral and Limnetic zones in Lake Itasca, Clearwater County, Minnesota, during two weeks in midsummer. In total, 82 species of rotifers were found, and 69 were identified to species. The littoral zone produced 67 species of rotifers, primarily associated with the aquatic macrophytes. While 35 species were collected in the limnetic zone, only 13 of them were restricted to that habitat. Species are listed by habitat and by type of plant on which they occurred.

An Electrophoretic Study Of Caecal Proteins Of Clinostomum Marginatum (Trematoda), Dale E. Greenwalt, Harold A. Borchers

Whole-worm extracts of Clinostomum marginatum were subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Gels of early stage metacercariae, late-stage metacercariae and adult worms contained 26,24, and 27 protein bands respectively. The protein band patterns of the three stages were similar except for 1) a hemoglobin band in gels of adult extracts and 2) a large increase in the quantity of four anodic bands of late-stage gels. The proteins constituting these four bands were present in the caecal contents of late-stage metacercariae . Myosin and myosin light-chain kinase have been isolated and characterized from small quantities of normal and SV40-transformed, murine astrocytic neuroglial cells in culture and from intact normal mouse brain. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the astrocyte myosins revealed a heavy chain of 200,000 daltons and two light chains of 20,000 and 15,000 daltons. These myosins are similar to other cytoplasmic myosins. The astrocyte 20,000-dalton light chain can be phosphorylated by an endogenous myosin light- chain kinase which has properties similar to those of the myosin light-chain kinase found in human platelets. Microscopic examination of the tracheal dimensions of normal Florida mice (Peromyscus floridanus) and cotton mice (P. gossypinus) showed no significant differences between the two species, but external examination showed the tracheal length of the Florida mouse to be longer than that of the cotton mouse. Microscopic examination of the intrapulmonary apparatus (bronchioles, alveolar ducts, atria, and alveoli) of normal Florida and cotton mice showed no significant differences in measurements between the two species. Cotton mice were exposed to exhaust gases produced by the burning of solid rocket motor (SRM) fuel. Mice exposed once for a duration of 10 min demonstrated …

Antibodies To Milk Antigens In Human Coronary Heart Disease, Efstathios Spinos

Milk protein has been implicated as a factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Significantly higher titers of antibodies (P < 0.0002) toward milk antigens were observed in patients suffering from coronary heart disease as compared to age matched controls. These hemagglutination titers were not sex related but may have been related to age. Specificity of the antigen-antibody reaction was demonstrated by a hemagglutination inhibition test. The complement fixation test was evaluated and was less sensitive than the tanned hemaggIutination test. Treatment with 2-mercapto-ethanol resulted in reduced hemagglutination titers, indicating that significant antibody activity may be due to IgM. A special application of the Combs test detected specific antibodies on the surface of tanned and coated RBC which did not otherwise produce detectable agglutination.

Attempts to find effective, environmentally safe methods to control insect infestations have been met with limited success. Pheromonal control has received considerable attention in the past decade because of its inherent desirable characteristics. The author spent his senior year searching for the sex pheromones of two different species of flies - the house fly (Musca domestica) and the flesh fly (Sarcophaga bullata). There is strong evidence to identify Hexanal as one of the components of the sex pheromone of the flesh fly (Sarcophaga bullata).

Some Helminths From Salamanders Of California, José Joaquín Castro

Studies on the helminth parasites of salamanders from California have been very limited.

Between September 1975 and April 1977, 340 salamander belonging to seven species, Aneides flavipunctatus (7), A. lugubris (7), Batrachoceps attenuatus attenuatus (250), Ensatina eschscholtzii eschscholtzii (52), E. e. sierrae (17), Taricha torosa (6), and Dicamptodon ensatus (1), were examined for helminths and found to harbor 10 species, four of which are new. The parasites found are: Cestoda: Distoichometra ensatinae sp. nov. from Ensatina e. eschscholtzii and E. e. sierrae; and Baerietta diana (Helfer, 1948) Douglas, 1958 from Batrachoceps a. attenuatus. In two independent studies, small mammals of grassland communities in eastern Kansas, when given a choice, preferred Fitch to Sherman live traps. Except for the harvest mice in the demographic study, the type of preferred trap and magnitude of selection was remarkably comparable, with microtines showing slight, and cricetines strong, preferences overall. The merits of each type of trap are compared, and related to season, weather, prior experience, and trap-associated mortality.

In order to further elucidate the hypothesis that the telencephalon of ectothermic vertebrates functions primarily as a non-specific arousal mechanism, facilitating lower brain areas, (the Arousal Hypothesis) the South African clawed frog, Xenoous laevis, was studied in four behavioral situations before and after telencephalon ablation, olfactory bulb ablation or sham surgery. Particular attention was paid to measurements of the temporal aspects of the behaviors studied.

The behaviors studied were:

1. Habituation to an acoustic-vibratory stimulus

2. The optomotor response

3. Escape from shallow water

4. Feeding behavior

Vernal pools need to be studied more extensively. and they still offer unlimited opportunities for such research (Holland and Griggs 1976).

The purpose of this investigation was to enumerate and compare the vascular plant species occurring at three vernal pools in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

Nemerteans are common invertebrates along coastlines in both temperate and arctic climates throughout the world. Amphiphorus imparispinosus is a carnivorous member of this phylum that is found abundantly in the intertidal areas of the Oregon coast. As in many other invertebrate phyla, endocrine integration within the nemerteans is thought to be accomplished by neurosecretory mechanisms. In Amphiphorus the presence of these neurosecretory systems has not been previously shown. The dispersal and dispersion patterns of Hydra fusca were examined. Hydra were placed in petri dishes at various densities. The water in the dishes was swirled forcing the animals to the center. The location of each animal was marked at time intervals thereafter. Analyses of the dispersal rates and dispersion patterns were made. Hydra dispersed from a central release point at a non-random rate. There was rapid movement from the center followed by a minimal daily movement. This eventually resulted in a uniform dispersion pattern at high densities in a limited environment. There was a relationship between the ratio of …

Cell-free extracts and whole cell suspensions of Desulfovibrio vulgaris were employed to examine the fixation of ¹⁴CO₂ into acid stable material. Moderate levels of CO₂ fixation occured in the presence of ribulose-1,5-diphosphate, ribose-5-phosphate or pyruvate with only minimal levels of CO₂ fixation occuring with formate, malate, or succinate. The fixation of CO₂ in the presence of pyruvate was attributed to the pyruvate-CO₂ exchange reaction. This exchange reaction was dependent on the presence of an acidic protein fraction but was not stimulated by the additions of ATP to the reaction mixture. The fixation of CO …

Somatic cell hybrids were constructed between BALB/c-RAG mouse cells and feline lymphoma cells by the hypoxanthine-aminopterin-thymidine selection scheme. RAG cells spontaneously produce an endogenous B-tropic type C virus. Cat-mouse hybrids preferentially segregate feline chromosomes and retain murine chromosomes,demonstrable by karyotypic and isozyme analyses. Despite the presence of the complete mouse genome, including the viral genome, virus production was diminished to 1-5% of the levels observed in RAG parents based upon particle-associated RNA-dependent DNA polymerase (reverse transcriptase) activity in the culture fluid. Thirty-seven hybrids made on four different occasions had suppressed virus levels, and no hybrids expressed parental virus levels. Reverse …

With the expanding use of plutonium-239 (239Pu) as a nuclear reactor fuel and increased recycling of spent reactor fuel to recover 239Pu, the possibility of an accidental human exposure exists. Little information is available on the effects of inhaled 239Pu on immune mechanisms. This study was performed in order to examine the effects of 239Pu dioxide (239Pu02) inhalation on the ability of mice to be immunized against a bac­terial respiratory infection in which cell-mediated immunity is the primary mechanism of host resistance to infection. Cells enzymatically dispersed from ovine thyroid tissue were cultured in Ham's F-10 medium supplemented with 8.33% Fetal Calf Serum and 8.33% Lamb Serum. Cultures were maintained in a humidified 37° C incubator having a 5% CO₂ - 95% air atmosphere. At 48 hours post isolation, cell culture medium was replaced and experiments begun. Altering the serum content (between 4.76 - 16.66%) of the nutrient medium had little effect upon either DNA content or ³H-thyrnidine incorporation into DNA. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) seemed to have a stablizing effect upon DNA content (between 0 and 7 days post TSH addition), and …
