Individuals who are positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and identify as MSM (men who have sex with men), a population disproportionately affected by this disease, face complex struggles due to interplay between multiple forms of stigma, disclosure, and HIV risk behaviors. This ambiguity can lead to low self-efficacy and hinder effective collaboration with other disciplines, which can negatively impact patient care. The purpose of this quantitative study is to explore the relationship between the occupational self-efficacy of medical social workers, level of experience and social workers’ perceptions of interdisciplinary collaboration when managing patients with co-occurring chronic pain and opioid use disorder. What factors are associated with social workers’ political participation, and how does political confidence mediate those relationships? To answer this question, data were collected in 2020 through an original online survey of members of the U.S.-based National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Informed by self-efficacy theory, researchers conducted a structural equation modeling (SEM) path model with political participation as the outcome variable, and political confidence as a mediating variable. Exogenous variables included: one’s self-reported political orientation, belief that social work has a political mandate, gender, and knowledge about how to effectively participate in politics. We developed a practical framework to construct digital twins for predicting and optimizing triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). This study employed 105 TNBC patients from the ARTEMIS trial (NCT02276443, registered on 10/21/2014) who received Adriamycin/Cytoxan (A/C)-Taxol (T). Digital twins were established by calibrating a biology-based mathematical model to patient-specific MRI data, which accurately predicted pathological complete response (pCR) with an AUC of 0.82. We then used each patient's twin to theoretically optimize outcome by identifying their optimal A/C-T schedule from 128 options. The patient-specifically optimized treatment yielded a significant improvement in pCR rate of 20.95-24.76%. Retrospective …

Priming CD8+ T cells against tumors or viral pathogens results largely from cross-presentation of exogenous antigens by type 1 conventional dendritic cells (cDC1s). Although monocyte-derived DCs and cDC2s can cross-present in vitro, their physiological relevance remains unclear. Here, we used genetic models to evaluate the role of cDC subsets in presentation of cell-associated and immune complex antigens to CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in vivo. For cell-associated antigens, cDC1s were necessary and sufficient to prime both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Bacteria utilize sophisticated secretion systems to inject effectors into host cells in order to facilitate their survival and replication in the host. Some pathogenic species of Gram-negative bacteria use a conserved contact-dependent T3SS to inject a wide array of effectors. While the effectors diverge in their structures, functions and cell-localization, the T3SS is well conserved. Several effectors discussed in this thesis target key host inflammasome responses. The focus of this work is how the Yersinia effector YopM inhibits the pyrin inflammasome. During Yersinia infection, two effectors, YopE and YopT inadvertently activate the pyrin inflammasome while targeting RhoA to avoid phagocytosis. …

In lieu of an abstract, here is an excerpt: Marriage in west Africa has played a central role in shaping aspects of society, and has evolved over time. While traditional heterosexual unions dominate discussions, a lesser-known but significant practice – woman-to-woman marriage – has existed for centuries. In my research, I examined this institution, which allows a woman to assume the role of a husband by marrying another woman. There’s evidence of woman-to-woman marriage in more than 40 societies across west Africa, including the Igbo of Nigeria, the Frafra of Ghana and the Dahomeans of present-day Benin.

The present research examined parents' perspectives of co-parenting and supportive and hostile parenting as predictors of youth resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 47 mother/father dyads who had at least one K-12 child (Mage = 11.40, SD = 3.92). Mothers and fathers each completed an online survey that measured parenting, co-parenting, and youth resilience during the pandemic. Data were analyzed using the actor–partner interdependence model. Results revealed a positive relationship between mother supportiveness and perceived youth resilience; in contrast, increased father supportiveness was associated with lower perceived youth resilience. To thrive in extreme conditions, organisms have evolved a diverse arsenal of adaptations that confer resilience. These species, their traits, and the mechanisms underlying them comprise a valuable resource that can be mined for numerous conceptual insights and applied objectives. Freshwater snails are widely distributed in the rice field ecosystem. Freshwater snails’ feeding and metabolic activities can potentially increase the complexity of freshwater ecosystems, particularly through the nutrient cycle. Cipangopaludina chinensis, Physa acuta, and Semisulcospira libertina are commonly found in Japan's paddy field ecosystems. Merr.] germplasm with drought tolerance released by the University of Arkansas System - Division of Agriculture Research & Extension Center in 2024. It is an F4-derived selection from the cross R12-2237 (drought-tolerant) x R12-519 (high-yielding). R19-42848 is a conventional (non-genetically modified) soybean with a relative maturity of 5.2. Plants have determinate growth habit with purple flower color, gray pubescence, and tan pod wall at maturity. White teachers enter culturally and racially diverse urban classrooms ill-prepared to teach. The resulting cultural mismatch contributes to educational disparities, including academic gaps and punitive imparities. Teacher education programs' attempts to address the gaps intend to immunize young teachers to the effects of implicit bias. However, the efforts do little to help teachers recognize how their implicit bias, in the form of ideological habits, created the need for a culturally responsive curriculum in the first place.

Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa) are a harvested waterfowl species experiencing the adverse effects of habitat loss linked to increasing human activity. To mitigate these effects, wildlife managers often provide artificial nest boxes as substitutes for natural cavities. In western Kentucky, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) maintains over 150 Wood Duck boxes but has observed anecdotal declines in nest success. While beneficial, nest boxes can create ecological traps such as brood parasitism, elevated temperatures, and predation, particularly when improperly placed or infrequently maintained. Allium cepa (onion) is a bulbous herb renowned for its diverse health benefits. This study aims to summarize the anticancer potential of A. cepa through the inactivation of the Nuclear Factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) pathway by reviewing experimental findings across various cancer models. A thorough examination of the literature was carried out using databases like Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. Background: Exposomes are critical drivers of carcinogenesis. However, how they modulate tumor behavior remains unclear. Extensive clinical data show cigarette smoke to be a key exposome that promotes aggressive tumors, higher rates of metastasis, reduced response to chemoradiotherapy, and suppressed anti-tumor immunity. We sought to determine whether smoke itself can modulate aggressive tumor behavior in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) through reprogramming of the cellular reductive state.
