This illustrated guide was prepared to provide the botanical community, land managers, and other interested persons with a reference that describes and locates the twelve plant taxa currently being considered by the Fish and Wildlife Service for threatened or endangered status in or around the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The guide is intended to assist managers of government agencies in determining the presence of these species and in defining management programs for their protection. The guide should be consulted prior to any construction project. If a potential conflict is identified, an onsite evaluation should be conducted early in the …

Communication and. social behavior of a prosimian primate, Nycticebus coucang, were studied to gain a better understanding of communication and social behaviors of the Order Primates. Four adult females, two adult males, and one juvenile male were the subjects for the study. The focal animal technique was used to observe communicative and social behavior. Vocal behaviors were sonagraphically analyzed. Probability of occurrence was calculated for all behavior categories observed. Conditional probabilities were calculated for the eight most frequently occurring behaviors in a lag sequential analysis. Phytoplankton Studies Within The Virginia Barrier Islands I. Seasonal Study Of Phytoplankton In Goose Lake, Parramore Island, Harold G. Marshall

The phytoplankton of Goose Lake, an oligohaline lake on Parramore Island, was studied for one year. The populations consisted primarily of ultraplankton and nanoplankton-sized forms with diatoms and chlorophyceans dominant most of the year. A general pattern of seasonally higher cell concentrations in early summer and fall was noted, with an unidentified ultraplankton-sized component prominent throughout the collection period. A list of 154 species is given.

Clinical and experimental data suggest that humans and some animals are protected from acute myocardial infarction by estrogen. There has been much speculation of the exact role which estrogen plays in the circulation. The mechanism of this hormonally related protection is unclear.

In the present study the chronic effects of estradiol benzoate on coronary blood flow in adult female rats were studied. Female control rats, castrates and castrates receiving estrogen for a period of 16 weeks were used. An Interphysiographic Analysis Of Herb And Shrub Vegetation In Virginia Forests, Stephen James Binns

Thirty upland deciduous stands were sampled from the mid-coastal Plain to the mid-Piedmont in New Kent, Hanover, and Louisa Counties. Density data for herb and shrub species were collected and soil samples were collected in each stand. A cluster analysis of the vegetation data was performed using Euclidean Distance and "furthest-neighbor" clustering. Four clusters of stands were identified. A cluster of six stands with Euonymus americanus as the dominant species was strongly related to the Coastal Plain, but the other clusters were not physiographically associated. Other important species in the analysis were Vaccinium vacillans, Gaylussacia baccata, and Mitchella repens.

Twenty-two species of Onagraceae in 6 genera occur in Iowa. Habitat data, flowering times, frequency, and geographical distributions were determined from field observations and herbaria records. Taxonomic keys and descriptions of the twenty-two species are also included. Although most species were clearly differentiated, two areas of taxonomic confusion existed in the family. Morphological differences were found to exist between three species commonly confused in previous flora studies: Oenothera biennis L. ssp. centralis Munz; O. strigosa {Rydb.) Mack. & Bush ssp. canovirens (Steele) Munz; and O. parviflora L. O. parviflora is reliably separated from the other two species by its subterminal …

Rotavirus has been shown to be an etiological agent of acute gastroenteritis, in human infants and children and in young animals, such as mice, calves, lambs, and pigs. Bovine, porcine, simian (SA-11) rotaviruses and the “0” agent (sheep, goat) have been cultivated in cell cultures. To date the human rotavirus has been propagated only in fetal intestine organ cultures, where it has lost infectivity after a few passages. Inhaled toxic materials can interact with lymphoid tissues of the respiratory tract resulting in altered immune responses. To test the effect of immunosuppression on lung immunity, corticosteroids were administered to Beagle dogs systemically or directly into the lung. Specific lung airways were lavaged at 5, 7, 10, and 12 days after intra­pulmonary immunization with sheep red blood cell (SRBC) antigen. The cytology of the bronchoalveolar cells in lung lavages was evaluated, and lymphoid cells isolated from lung airways and from blood were tested by the Cunningham assay for in vitro production of antigen-specific IgM and IgG antibodies. Plutonium that reaches the systemic circulation by inhalation, ingestion or through cuts or abrasions is preferentially deposited in the liver and bone. Liver cancer may be an important late effect of this deposition. This study was designed to provide improved quantita­tion of the distribution of plutonium deposited in liver as a result of gradual introduction into the blood by absorption from the lung, com­pared with the immediate introduction by intravenous injection of a soluble form. Eight garter snakes, Thamnophis elegans, were collected in northern New Mexico during July and August. The snakes were kept in an environmental chamber and were entrained to a 141 (0630-2030 h) / 10D (2030-0630 h) cycle for five weeks at 25 C. Ventilation was monitored with a head/body plethysmograph. Pulmonary oxygen uptake was measured by open-system respirometry. Heart rate was recorded with electrodes implanted subcutaneously, bi-lateral to the heart. Ventilation, oxygen uptake and heart rate were measured simultaneously at 25+-1 C. All measurements were recorded continuously for 48-96 hours. The effects of feed contamination by droppings of starlings (Sturnis vulgaris) on certain growth parameters in swine (Sus scrofa) were measured from January 25 to March 1, 1979 at the Western Kentucky University farm. Weight gain, feed-conversion efficiency and feed rejection by swine fed varying levels of contaminated feed were analyzed and found to be non-significant at the fecal concentrations used.

Laboratory mice (Mus musculus) were fed varying concentrations of starling feces in standard mouse chow; weight gain, feed-conversion efficiency and feed rejection were measured. At 0%, 10%, 25% and 50% concentrations, significant differences …

The host plant preferences of two generalist lepidopteran herbivores were investigated at a field site near Albuquerque from 1977 to 1979. Observations of larvae in the field and measurements of available biomass for each host plant were combined to calculate preference rankings for host plants. Similarly, the relative preference of each herbivore for young or mature leaves was calculated. Both Estigmene acrea (Drury) and Hyles lineata (Fabricius) preferred to feed on Rumex hymenosepalus in the spring. H. lineata is univoltine and was not observed feeding on any other plant species. Small mammal population dynamics and community structure were studied in three East Central Florida communities. The communities were compared as distinct stages of a sand pine scrub sere. The small mammals live-trapped with greatest frequency in this 3852 trap-night study were all cricetine rodents, Peromyscus polionotus niveiventris (beach mouse), Sigmodon hispidus littoralis (cotton rat), and Peromyscus gossypinus palmarius (cotton mouse). Population numbers, survival, body weights, hind foot lengths, age structure, sex ratios, reproductive cycles, and movements were discussed for each of three species mentioned. Two populations of Sagittaria brevirostra from the same lake were sampled 10 years apart and yielded similar data on inflorescence structure and on numbers and ratios of male and female flowers. Larger inflorescences have relatively more male than female flowers than do smaller inflorescences. Pollination success is unrelated to inflorescence size or sex ratio within an inflorescence.

Tartaric acid accumulation in fermentation broth of Gluconobacter suboxydans was investigated qualitatively with paper chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Comparisons were made using six different solvent systems and four different chemical indicators commonly used in chromatography.

Attempts were made to establish a routine method for quantitative analysis of tartaric acid. Spectrophotometry was used to detect possible metabolites resulting from glucose oxidation by G. suboxydans in different analytical separations. A combined method of ion-exchange column chromatography and paper chromatography followed by ammonium meta-vanadate spectrophotometric analysis differentiated 5-oxogluconic acid and tartaric acid and thus gave better quantitative results in the determination of tartaric …
