Age, growth, and food habits of the population of Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) in Westhampton Lake were studied from September to November 1978. Two year classes (0 and I) were identified by determining numbers of annuli on the scales of the fish. Growth data indicated that the bass attain a size of 254 mm (10 in.) near the end of their second summer. The length-weight relationship was log W = -4.6829 + 2.9153 log TL. The Fulton condition factor for the population was 1.40. Food habits were described by numerical and frequency of occurrence methods. Young of the year sunfish …

The interacting effects of tetraiodothyronine (T4) and epi- nephrine on Na++K+-dependent ATPase, hexokinase, and pyruvate kinase in cardiac tissue of white rats were investigated in an attempt to elucidate the hormonal regulation of heart metabolism. Previous evidence has shown that 90% of the increase in oxygen consumption exhibited by hyperthyroid rats was due to an activation of Na++K+- dependent ATPase. In addition, hypothyroidism in sheep was re­ ported to lower cardiac Na++K+-dependent ATPase activity as well as 8-adrenergic binding sites for epinephrine. The initial step in the infectious cycle of the single-stranded DNA phage øX174 is the synthesis of a DNA strand complementary to the infecting viral DNA producing a duplex molecule, the parental replicative form (RF). Electron micrographic examination of parental RF produced from viruses exposed to ultra-violet (UV) light suggests that synthesis begins at only one site. However, in vitro results and some recent reports of in vivo experiements contradict that interpretation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the disturbance spectrum of the perennial plant vegetation by the Barstow to Las Vegas motorcycle race. Transects were taken at the pit area, starting line, and at various locations along the race course. Measurements were also taken in undisturbed control sites near the test areas, the topographic and bio tic features being judged as equal. Methods employed consisted of aerial photograph analysis just before and after the race. On site ground measurements were taken four years after the 1974 motorocycle event. Distributional Ecology Of Vegetation In The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau, California, John A. Rosario

Interpool distribution studies of 10 vernal pools on the Santa Rosa Plateau found area to be the best single predictor of species richness in each type of regression model evaluated. Area predicted most accurately in a mixed linear-curvilinear regression model (y = a + b log x). Area appeared to reflect ecologic diversity, because multiple linear regression models provided better predictions of species richness using combinations of physical characteristics which excluded area from the regression equation. In addition, species turnover was demonstrated in a single vernal pool that was evaluated.

The purpose of this study, which was undertaken from September, 1977 through June, 1978 was to survey the response of perennial vegetation to General Patton's World War II armored maneuvers. This information will be used to help construct a basis for predicting recovery rates on the effects of off-road vehicle impacts in the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA). These impacts were assessed in three usage categories: tank tracks in the maneuvers areas; roadways, which were used primarily by jeeps and trucks; and tent areas, cleared areas in which tents and other semi-permanent structures were erected. The study of trypanosomatid biology would benefit greatly from the acquisition of a tool for culturing such as those used in microbiology. Agar plate culture has been described several times, but until the present its potential for use in this area has been underestimated. The previous work has demonstrated that this culture method may be used to culture a wide variety of species, that these species give rise to identifiable colony phenotypes, and that these are stable regardless of the life cycle stage used to initiate the culture. Methods were devised for the isolation and pure culture in defined mineral medium of Closteriurn ehrenbergii Menegh (Chlorophyceae). The effect of pH, type of nitrogen source, nitrate concentration, total hardness, and various buffers on growth were investigated. Best growth rates were obtained at pH 8 to 9, but good growth was observed even at pH 9.4. Nitrate, ammonia, or urea nitrogen could be utilized, but at concentrations greater than 10^-2M urea was toxic to growth. At higher concentrations of ammonia and nitrate longer lag phases of growth were obtained but eventual higher cell yields were obtained. Good growth …

Comparative jaw and skull morphologies were analyzed in two closely related species of bats, Myotis volans (aerial insectivore) and Myotis evotis (foliage gleaner). Force vector analyses were performed on each muscle-bone lever system to determine the relative force produced at three designated functional points along the lower tooth row: the incisors, canine, and protoconid of the second molar. Results of the analysis indicate that Myotis evotis not only has a more powerful bite and grip than volans but it also has the potential for a much quicker jaw closure which is most effective at smaller angles of jaw opening. Many small ponds in the eastern plains of New Mexico are inhabited by yellow mud turtles. Some of these ponds are permanent, but many dry out during the year. This makes the terrestrial activity of mud turtles an important aspect of their life history. When turtles were active within the ponds, they showed no preference for permanent over temporary water. There were always more females than males present in the ponds. As water levels receded, aquatic activity lessened and the turtles buried themselves just under the mud near the edge of the pond for a few days and then moved …

For interpreting environmental implications of Quaternary faunal changes, anurans and lizards are more informative than other vertebrates. Remains are analyzed from five sites in the limestone hills west of Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico. The modern anuran and lizard fauna of Eddy County is reviewed in terms of habit requirements and known distributions and is used as a standard for interpreting prehistoric remains. Procedures are described for preparing comparative skeletons and for analyzing; prehistoric remains.

The structure of the glucose-inhibited form of glycogen phosphorylase a has been determined at a resolution of 2.5 Å. With the aid of the primary sequence derived by Titani et al. (1977) for this enzyme, we have constructed an atomic model of the 97,400 molecular weight monomer. A substantial improvement in the electron density map over that reported previously (Fletterick et al., 1976b) was achieved by extension of the data set to 2.5 Å and the inclusion of three additional "heavy-atom" derivatives in the phasing procedure. The reproductive biology of the Florida east coast terrapin, Malalemys terrapin tequesta was studied during 1977-1978 at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Brevard County, Florida. Mating occurred in small canals and ditches during late march and April. Terrapins exhibited a poorly developed courtship behavior system: this was attributed to the relative isolation of the species due to its brackish water habitat. Nesting occurred on dike roads, rather than on sand dunes as reported for other races of Malaclemys. Air temperature was the most important factor controlling nesting activity. Life history and behavioral information on North American isopods are limited and non-existent for the genus Thermosphaeroma. The habitat of T. thermophilum allows easy and accurate collection of field and laboratory data. The relative absence of complicating evolutionary contexts facilitates investigation of sexually selected behavior and morphology. Males are larger than females. Reproduction and mortality are somewhat seasonal. Sex ratio is consistently male-biased, which is attributed to male searching for mates and avoidance of males by non-reproductive females. T. thermophilum is omnivorous. Reproductive timing by females and its contribution to sexual dimorphism are discussed. Males choose mates by size and …

The characteristics and kinetics of sulfate uptake and reduction by Desulfovibrio gigas were studied using radio-labelled sulfate, in order to assess the nature of terminal electron acceptor transport with respect to current membrane transport theory. Although sulfate is not accumulated into an intracellular pool, it is transported across the cell membrane prior to reduction as evidenced by studies on the localization of sulfate binding and reduction by cellular fractions. Sulfate is rapidly bound by whole cells to a stead, -state level which is a function of extracellular sulfate concentration and the availability of an electron donor. Particles containing vanadium are emitted into the air from fuel oil and coal combustion, and may be inhaled by man. Because such particles are within the respirable size, vanadium may be deposited in the alveolar region of the lung and come into contact with the pulmonary alveolar macrophage. In order to evaluate vanadium cytotoxicity, pulmonary alveolar macrophages were lavaged from dogs, rabbits and rats and then incubated with various concentrations of vanadium pentoxide. The minimum vanadium pentoxide concentration which reduced cell viability from control was 1 mg/m1 for dog macrophages, 2.5 mg/ml for rabbit macrophages and 10 mg/ml for rat …

The Barren River was sampled twice monthly for one year to obtain data on aquatic yeasts. Sites upstream and downstream of the Bowling Green sewage plant, as well as the sewage effluent, were sampled to ascertain if the effluent had any effect on the yeast population of the river. Sporadic yeast counts were obtained which averaged 40 CFU/ml for the effluent, while the river averaged 15 CFU/ml. A total of 318 yeasts were isolated and identified during the study, including 16 different genera with Cryptococcus being the most common. Cryptococcus laurentii occurred most frequently of the 67 different species identified. …

Four groups of female Swiss Webster mice were injected intraperitoneally with similar volumes of normal saline, sonicated Trypanosoma musculi and saline, sonicated trypanosomes and Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) and FCA. When the mice became immune and thus responded negatively to a T. musculi challenge, sera were collected and administered to four other groups of mice to establish passive immunity in these animals.

An established dose of innoculum of Trichinella spiralis larvae (8.1 larvae/gram of body weight) was given to all the mice by gastric gavage. These mice were killed 26 days later and the musculature digested with artificial gastric juice …

The vegetation of a tropical cloud forest in northern Mexico was analyzed by the point- quarter and line intercept methods to determine the relative density, relative dominance, relative frequency and importance values of the woody and herbaceous species. The flora of the study site, near Gomez Farias, Tamaulipas, Mexico, represents a unique mixture of temperate and tropical taxa. Based on importance values, the upper woody stratum was dominated by oak (Quercus sartorii Liebm.), sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.), Turpinia occidentalis (Swartz) Don and Clethra macrophylla Mart, and Gal. Ascorbic Acid, Lipid Peroxidation, And Aging, Brian Evan Leibovitz

The role of ascorbic acid with regard to lipid peroxidation and aging has been examined. A thorough literature analysis indicates that free radical-induced lipid peroxidation is a plausible biochemical explanation for aging. Lipid peroxidation causes cellular damage due to altered enzyme activities, error-prone nucleic acid metabolism, and membrane dysfunction, as well as the accumulation of aging pigments in the lysomes. Ascorbic acid, a water soluble free radical quencher, was examined with regard to carbon tetra-chloride-induced lipid peroxidation and in vivo aging. It is well established that females are more immunocompetent than males as evidenced by higher humoral antibody titers, lowered susceptibility to infection, and more efficient graft rejection.

Furthermore, females also exhibit a much higher incidence of autoimmune disease. These observations have led investigators to believe that the male hormonal environment may play a key role in the regulation of immune response. For this reason, this study is concerned with the expression of autoimmunity and of immune function in the mouse.

Naturally occurring populations of three species of colonial, altricial birds, the Piñon Jay (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), Great-tailed Grackle (Cassidix mexicanus) and Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) were tested for egg discrimination and the presence of intraspecific brood parasitism such discrimination would imply. Current theory predicts that, based on the intense pressure to increase personal fitness, brood parasitism, or cheating, should occur when a brood parasite's fitness is enhanced relative to a nonparasite's. Due to the high costs of parental care in altricial birds, selection against such cheaters (actual or potential) should also be intense. Egg rejection is the most common selection mechanism …
