An Ichtyhyofaunal Survey Of Three Kentucky Tailwaters, William Robinson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Tailwater fishes of the Green, Barren, and Rough River Lakes, Kentucky, were sampled in the fall of 1978, spring 1979, and summer 1979. Fish per acre estimates were greatest in the fall and least in the spring, while standing crop estimates were similar in the fall and spring but markedly lower in the summer. Cyprinidae was the predominant family represented in the entire study. Rough species comprised the greatest component of biomass in each tailwater, while forage and/or game fish represented the majority of individuals.

Barren River tailwater fishes exhibited the greatest average standing crop estimates, while the greatest variety …

A Comparative Analysis Of Plant Response Parameters : To The Los Angeles Aqueduct Systems In The Mojave Desert, California, Edwin F. Archbold May 1980

A Comparative Analysis Of Plant Response Parameters : To The Los Angeles Aqueduct Systems In The Mojave Desert, California, Edwin F. Archbold

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A comparative study of the two Los Angeles aqueduct systems was appropriate and feasible because of the 57 year span between construction dates. Although, dealing with complex interactive relationships of a variety of parameters and some unmeasurable aspects, this project attempted to get a closer look at the impacts of man-made constructions in the Mojave Desert.

Land managers and ecologists are particularly interested in answering the questions, how did the Mojave Desert perennial vegetation respond to a utility construction, such as the Los Angeles aqueduct, and what is the intensity of damage to plant cover. The recovery rates for vegetation …

Humoral And Secretory Immunoglobulins Of The Sheepshead, Archosargus Probatocephalus, A Marine Teleost, Craig J. Lobb May 1980

Humoral And Secretory Immunoglobulins Of The Sheepshead, Archosargus Probatocephalus, A Marine Teleost, Craig J. Lobb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The sheepshead has two readily isolatable humoral immunoglobulins, a 16S tetrameric form and a 6S monomeric form. The 16S tetrameric form is composed of two subpopulations, one being a disulfide linked form (~700,000 daltons) and the other a noncovalently linked population of predominantly disulfide linked dimers (~350,000 daltons). The 6s immunoglobulin (~140,000 daltons) is composed of two noncovalently linked units (~70,000 daltons) each having one heavy and one light chain. The 6S immunoglobulin is antigenically deficient to the 16S immunoglobulin, this deficiency may be due to the heavy chain of the 6s protein lacking a~25,000 dalton segment present in the …

Effects Of Ddt Upon The Hematology And Immunology Of The Goldfish (Carassius Auratus), Maurice G. Zeeman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

DDT can cause hematological and immunological alterations in mammals and birds. Interference with normal hematological and immunological defense systems has been strongly linked to increased incidences of disease and tumors. Fish exposed to pesticides have been noted to be more susceptible to disease. This study examined DDT effects on goldfish hematological and immunological parameters.

Adult goldfish were kept in 250 liter aquaria at 25 ± 1° C. Fish were dosed intraperitoneally with p,p'-DDT in corn oil. Doses ranged from 0 to 500 mg/kg for acute (96 hour) hematology studies to 0 to 50 mg/kg for sub-acute hematology and immunology studies. …

Metabolism, body temperature (Tb), and feather reflectance was measured for dark Louisiana herons (LOU), little blue herons (LB), snowy egrets (SE), and cattle egrets (CE); only LOU nest preferentiallyin shade. The reflectance of LOU and adult LB was 13%-15%; it was 80%-82% for SE, CE, and immature (white) LB. Tb for all four species approximated 40 C; hypothermy was never observed. Basal metabolism (HJb) was 107% of the expected level for LOU, 85% for SE and CE, and 66% for LB. Minimal thermal conductance (C) was calculated as approximately 131% of the expected value for LOU, 115% for SE and …

Immunobiology Of Schistosomiasis, Clarence Lee, Mohamed Elhelu, Georgiana Aboko-Cole Mar 1980

Immunobiology Of Schistosomiasis, Clarence Lee, Mohamed Elhelu, Georgiana Aboko-Cole

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Although malaria and hookworm disease appear to be on the decline, another dreaded parasitic disease-schistosomiasis-is on the increase. Presently, the number of infected individuals with schistosomes is estimated to be 250 million, and even though only a small proportion of them become sick and die, schistosomiasis remains a medical problem of great significance. The high incidence of infection of man with Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum or Schistosoma haematobium, as well as the chronic debilitating diseases produced, places these organisms among the world's most important infectious agents. This paper discusses the nature of immunity to schistosomiasis.

Isolation And Identification Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria From Bovine Lung Abscesses, Steven Daniel Jan 1980

Isolation And Identification Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria From Bovine Lung Abscesses, Steven Daniel

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

For many years, the role of anaerobic bacteria in human diseasewas considered important only in such clostridial diseases as gas gangrene, botulism and tetanus. In the last 10 years, however, the developmentof new methods to isolate and identify anaerobic bacteria has establishedthe pathogenic role of non-sporeforming anaerobic bacteria in awide variety of clinical infections in humans. Bacteroides fragilis isnow known to account for approximately one-fourth of all anaerobicbacteria isolated from human clinical specimens.

The team consisted of Don McFarlane, John Dye, Malcolm Macduff, Mike Roger and Barry Williams, all of whom contributed to this report. The expedition base was at Troy, where the villagers are owed a debt of gratitude for their hospitality. This placed the expedition in the heart of the cave region, and a number of new caves and shafts were discovered and explored. The main discovery was the Still Waters Cave, located near Accompong, where 11,800 feet of …

Kinetics Of Adp-Induced Human Platelet Shape Change: Apparent Positive Cooperativity, John Milton, W. Yung, C. Glushak, Mony M. Frojmovic Jan 1980

Kinetics Of Adp-Induced Human Platelet Shape Change: Apparent Positive Cooperativity, John Milton, W. Yung, C. Glushak, Mony M. Frojmovic

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The kinetics of ADP-induced human platelet shape change have been examined. Initial velocities of platelet shape change were estimated by two methods: 1) the slope of the initial decrease in light transmission through stirred, citrated platelet-rich plasma, and 2) direct examination of platelet morphologies by phase-contrast microscopy. In both cases, a value of the Hill coefficient, n, significantly greater than 1 is obtained (2.0 +/- 0.2 and 1.8 +/- 0.2, respectively). The observed elevated value of n is not due to a substantial fraction of the ADP being platelet bound, the presence of factors in the plasma, platelet heterogeneity, of …

Subunit Interactions And The Allosteric Response In Phosphorylase, S. Sprang, R. J. Fletterick Jan 1980

Subunit Interactions And The Allosteric Response In Phosphorylase, S. Sprang, R. J. Fletterick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The contribution of intersubunit interactions to allosterically induced conformational changes in phosphorylase are considered. Phosphorylase a, Pa (phosphorylated at Ser-14), is significantly in the active (R) conformation, while phosphorylase b, Pb (nonphosphorylated), is predominantly in the inactive (T) conformation. The structure of glucose-inhibited (T) Pa has been determined at 2.5-A resolution and atomic coordinates have been measured. These data have been used to calculate the solvent accessible surface area at the subunit interface and map noncovalent interactions between protomers. The subunit contact involves only 6% of the Pa monomer surface, but withdraws an area of 4,600 A2 from solvent. The …

Upper Three Runs Creek and its tributary sources, located mostly on property of the Savannah River Plant near Aiken, South Carolina (Fig. 1), is well-known as an unpolluted, blackwater drainage system which is probably typical of smaller, Sandhills waterways of primeval southeastern North America. Probably no other stream at the Plant's Flowing Stream Laboratory (or Thermal Effects Laboratory) has been documented by a research team from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (A.N.S.P.).

Spider Community Organization : Seasonal Variation And The Role Of Vegetation Architecture, Cynthia L. Hatley, James A. Macmahon Jan 1980

Spider Community Organization : Seasonal Variation And The Role Of Vegetation Architecture, Cynthia L. Hatley, James A. Macmahon

Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah

The relationship between vegetation architecture and spider community attributes were examined in a big sage community. Spiders were separated into guilds using similarities of species' hunting behavior. Shrub architecture was experimentally manipulated in the field by either clippings 50% of the shrub's foliage to decrease foliage density or tying together a shrub's branches to increase foliage density. Shrub perturbations resulted in changes in the number of spider species, spider guilds and guild importance values. The number on spider species and guilds in the tied shrubs were significantly higher than those in the clipped or control shrubs sampled. Spider species diversity …

Seasonal Sexual Cycle Of Nerodia Taxispilota (Serpentes: Colubridae) At The Northeastern Edge Of Its Range, David Roland White

Master's Theses

The seasonality of the sexual cycle of Nerodia taxispilota at the northeastern edge of its range was elucidated from specimens collected over a two-year period (1978-1979) from the Appomattox River near Hopewell, Virginia. The investigation centered on morphological changes in the testis of males and vitellogenesis and embryo development in females. Related reproductive parameters also studied were body size differences, seasonal sex ratios, comparative tail lengths, and tail mutilation.

Male and female cycles closely resembled those of other temperate zone colubrids. Spermatogenesis began in May and testis size peaked in late August. Testis length showed a time lag when compared …

Association Of Aquatic Insects To Macrophytes In An Agricultural Drainage Ditch, Kevin King, John Flypaa, Henry W. Quade Jan 1980

Association Of Aquatic Insects To Macrophytes In An Agricultural Drainage Ditch, Kevin King, John Flypaa, Henry W. Quade

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The aquatic insects associated with five species of aquatic macrophytes were collected and identified from a drainage ditch in Le Suer County. A total of 21,160 specimens from eight orders were recovered with Diptera being the dominant. Tests of association, using the Coefficient of Community and Percent Similarity revealed a unique community associated with Potamogeton nodosus. Further, the authors found that the same information generated from the study could have been accomplished without the detailed taxonomy.

Benthic Macroinvertebrates In A Hydrilla Infested Central Florida Lake, Stefani L. Scott

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Benthic macroinvertebrates and physicochemical parameters were monitored simultaneously with hydrilla in a central Florida lake. Changes in the benthos were described in relation to plant growth. Twenty-seven of the 54 taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates collected were members of the Family Chironomidae. Chironomids and oligochaetes numerically dominated the benthos, comprising of 82% of the individual collected. The greatest numbers of species and individuals were found during the winter when hydrilla biomass was low. Hydrilla biomass ranged from 0.385 kg/m2 in April, 1977 to 2.275 kg/m2 in October, 1977. Low numbers of species and individuals were collected from bottom sediments during summer …

Sex Change In Plants: Old And New Observations And New Hypotheses, D.C. Freeman, K.T. Harper, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Evidence is presented that individuals of a large number of dioecious and subdioecious plant species are able to alter their sexual state in response to changes in the ambient environment and/or changes in size or age. We suggest that lability of sexual expression probably has survival value where a significant portion of the females must otherwise bear the cost of fruit production in unfavorable environments. We demonstrate that in patchy environments of the proper scale and variability in quality, labile sexual expression will enhance an individuals genetic contribution to the next generation.
