Area-Species Curve Applies To Gaps In A Canada Hemlock (Tsuga Canadensis (L.) Carr.) Forest In The Shenandoah National Park, Joseph John Lacroix
Area-Species Curve Applies To Gaps In A Canada Hemlock (Tsuga Canadensis (L.) Carr.) Forest In The Shenandoah National Park, Joseph John Lacroix
Master's Theses
A typical area-species curve shows that species richness (number of species) and island size are positively correlated. I tested whether the area-species concept, which was developed using islands, could be applied to herbaceous plants in canopy gaps in a hemlock community.
I conducted studies in Limberlost, Shenandoah National Park. I measured the species richness of herbaceous plants in six gaps during the summer and fall of 1995 and eight gaps and one non-gap site in the spring of 1996. The two additional gaps in 1996 extended the upper range of gap sizes. I calculated the correlation between species richness and …
Phorbol Ester Activation Of An Nhe-Like Electroneutral Na+ /H+ Antiporter In Isolated E-Cells Of Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreas, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn
Phorbol Ester Activation Of An Nhe-Like Electroneutral Na+ /H+ Antiporter In Isolated E-Cells Of Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreas, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
The basolateral membrane of Atlantic lobster (Homarus americanus) epithelium possesses an electroneutral Na+ /H+ antiporter that functionally resembles members of the vertebrate NHE family. Regulatory mechanisms of this antiporter in purified hepatopancreatic E-cell suspensions, produced with a centrifugal elutriation technique, were investigated. Suspensions routinely consisted of greater than 95% E-cells displaying greater than 90% viability. Intracellular pH (pHi) was monitored by loading cells with the fluorescent dye 2´,7´-bis(carboxyethyl)-5,6- carboxyfluorescein (BCECF), and placing suspensions in a spectrofluorometer. Recovery from induced acid-loading was mediated by a Na+ -dependent, dimethylamiloride-sensitive proton efflux. Antiport activation was a sigmoidal function of pHi at values below …

Intraspecific Heterochrony And Life History Evolution: Decoupling Somatic And Sexual Development In A Facultatively Paedomorphic Salamander, Travis J. Ryan, Raymond D. Semlitsch
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Morphological features such as size and shape are the most common focus in studies of heterochronic change. Frequently, these easily observed and measured features are treated as a major target of selection, potentially ignoring traits more closely related to fitness. We question the primacy of morphological data in studies of heterochrony, and instead suggest that principal sources of fitness, such as life history characteristics, are not only the chief targets of selection, but changes in them may necessitate changes in other (subordinate) elements of the organism. We use an experimental approach to investigate the timing of metamorphosis and maturation in …

Dealing With Death And The Grieving Process, David M. Gabel
Dealing With Death And The Grieving Process, David M. Gabel
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
There are two things that our society doesn't really openly discuss. Oddly enough, they are things that will affect everyone on this planet regardless of race, religion, gender, class, or nationality. I am speaking of the beginning of life, and the end of life. The subject of how life begins is for some reason "taboo" in our society. Children are told absurd things like children are brought to their parents by birds, such as a stork. Another popular tale is that children are "grown" in gardens and are discovered under leaves. The subject of sex seems to be one that …

Detection Of The Filarial Parasite Mansonella Streptocerca In Skin Biopsies By A Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction-Based Assay, Peter U. Fischer, Dietrich W. Büttner, Jotham Bamuhiiga, Steven A. Williams
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
To differentiate the skin-dwelling filariae Mansonella streptocerca and Onchocerca volvulus, a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed from small amounts of parasite material present in skin biopsies. One nonspecific and one specific pair of primers were used to amplify the 5S rDNA spacer region of M. streptocerca. Biopsies with different microfilaria densities obtained from 104 Ugandans living in an area endemic forM. streptocerca were tested using both the nested PCR assay and standard parasitologic assessment of microfilariae. All 82 samples from microfilaria carriers were positive when tested using the nested PCR assay. In addition, M. streptocerca DNA could …

Chondrocranial And Oral Morphology Of Pipoid Frogs, Charles Christopher Swart
Chondrocranial And Oral Morphology Of Pipoid Frogs, Charles Christopher Swart
Master's Theses
The Pipoidea are a diverse group of frogs. Their diversity is demonstrated in their morphology, ecology, and behavior. One pipoid species, Xenopus laevis, has been used as a model system of developmental, physiological, and molecular studies of vertebrates. My work has focused on the developmental morphology of the chondrocranium and oral morphology of four pipoid taxa: Hymenochirus boettgeri, Rhinophrynus dorsalis, Pipa carvalhoi, and Xenopus laevis. Previous studies have suggested that the Anura may be diphyletic based on the unique characteristics of the chondrocanial morphology of pipoids. The chondrocranial and internal oral morphology of the pipoids indicates that as a group …

The Characterization Of The Ty5 Strain Of Chamydomonas Reinhardtii, A Chlorophyll Biosynthetic Mutant, Robert Graham '98
Honors Projects
Chlorophyll is the light harvesting molecule for many photosynthetic organisms. As a result, chlorophyll is an extremely important molecule, directly or indirectly, to nearly all life. The production of chlorophyll involves a long and complex pathway. The conversion of protochlorophyllide to chlorophyllide is one of the final steps in chlorophyll biosynthesis. Some of the factors affecting the regulation of this process were the focus of this project.

The Role Of The Comstock-Kellogg Glands In Egg Tanning In Romalea Guttata, Elizabeth A. Elasser '98
Honors Projects
FreshIy laid eggs of the Eastern Lubber grasshopper, Romalea guttata, are yellow and soft-shelled, but within several hours the eggs become hardened and dark brown. In a similar process, calyx and oviduct secretions, which from the egg pod, become frothy, darkened, hardened, and water insoluble during oviposition. It has been suggested that secretions from the paired Comstock-Kellogg glands accelerate tanning of both the eggs and egg pod foam. I investigated the effects of Comstock-Kellogg gland secretions on the rate of egg and egg pod tanning during egg pod production in the female Eastern Lubber grasshopper, R. guttata. Eggs streaked with …

The Targeting Mechanisms Of Membrane Proteins, Nihat Di̇lsi̇z
The Targeting Mechanisms Of Membrane Proteins, Nihat Di̇lsi̇z
Turkish Journal of Biology
This review describes what is known about the way of insertion and translocation of membrane proteins and the factors that determine these structures. The translocation of proteins across the cytoplasmic membrane in prokaryotes and that across the endosplasmic reticulum membrane in eukaryotes are similar in that both require the sinyal peptide that is attached to the amino terminus of the proteins. In general, mebrane proteins reach their final target via the secretory (Sec) pathway which are called Sec-dependent proteins. However, it has become clear that a few membrane proteins are not involved in Sec-pathway and these are called Sec-independent proteins.
