The Interaction Between Phonological Reading Skills And Executive Functioning In Adults With Cochlear Implants, Tierney Marie Maurer May 2025

The Interaction Between Phonological Reading Skills And Executive Functioning In Adults With Cochlear Implants, Tierney Marie Maurer

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Little research has been conducted concerning the interaction between phonological reading skills (the ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds of language) and executive functioning (a set of processes that are necessary for the cognitive control of behavior) in adults with hearing loss. The current study examined the potential association between phonological reading skills, hearing loss, and executive functioning in post-lingually deaf and hard of hearing adults who use cochlear implants. Two hypotheses were tested: 1) adult cochlear implant users have weaker executive functioning and phonological reading skills compared to their hearing peers; 2) adults with hearing loss who use …

The “Deviant” Dead: (De)Constructing Personhood In Mycenaean Mortuary Landscapes, Aidan J. Gregg May 2025

The “Deviant” Dead: (De)Constructing Personhood In Mycenaean Mortuary Landscapes, Aidan J. Gregg

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Despite increasing standardization in mortuary practice during the Mycenaean palatial period, there remains a significant degree of variation in burials. This project seeks to elucidate the reasons for the wide variability in the Mycenaean mortuary program with theories of anthropological personhood as a guiding framework. I focus on the palatial period, from LHIII A2 - LHIIIB2 (1410-1190) because of the pervasiveness of Mycenaean culture throughout the Aegean, but especially in Greece’s northeastern Peloponnese, during that time. I use mortuary data from 12 cemeteries in the Argolid and Korinthia to trace trends in burial practice, in the hope of establishing a …

Sympatric Behavior Of Tree Squirrels In An Urban Environment, Ryan L. Snyder May 2025

Sympatric Behavior Of Tree Squirrels In An Urban Environment, Ryan L. Snyder

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) are ubiquitous in urban ecosystems like university campuses despite the habitat loss and fragmentation often associated with urbanization. While populations of both species usually do not overlap in their native geographic ranges, gray and fox squirrels are sometimes forced into coexistence in urban habitats where fewer green spaces are available. The coexistence of both species at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana refutes the competitive exclusion principle, and niche partitioning is likely necessary for them to coexist. This study assessed the activity patterns of fox and gray squirrels at Butler …

Atomic Level Characterization For The Transport Cycle Conformational Pathways Of Multidrug Resistance Protein 1 (Mrp1), Samuel Wamwere Mwatha

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 (MRP1/ABCC1) is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter that mediates the cellular efflux of endogenous and xenobiotic substrates, including therapeutic drugs. Its overexpression is a major contributor to multidrug resistance in cancer, which tends to result in negative clinical results. Even with considerable progress made in structural biology, the intricate details of how membrane lipid composition affects the conformational changes and functional switches of MRP1 still lack explanation.

This thesis employs long-timescale, all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the influence of various lipids on MRP1 lipid bilayer environments. Both inward-facing and outward-facing conformations of MRP1 …

Exploring 2slgbtqia+ Parenting In Northwest Arkansas, Bailey Mason

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the U.S. Census Bureau first published data on “same-sex” households in 2011, research has repeatedly indicated the majority of 2SLGBTQIA+ parents (here on referred to as “queer parents”) reside outside of major cities in heavily populated regions of the country. However, due to widespread metronormative narratives about the queer experience, the experiences of queer parents in less-populated regions are rarely studied. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of queer parents in Northwest Arkansas, a region of the politically and religiously conservative Southern U.S. with areas both urban and rural. Applying grounded theory and drawing from queer theory to …

Investigating Self-Healing Mechanisms In Host-Pathogen Interactions: A Literature Review Of Macrophage Functions In Tuberculosis, Blessing Savusa May 2025

Investigating Self-Healing Mechanisms In Host-Pathogen Interactions: A Literature Review Of Macrophage Functions In Tuberculosis, Blessing Savusa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of mortality, particularly in underdeveloped regions. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is regarded as one of the most successful pathogens due to its ability to evade host immunity and persist within granulomas. Macrophages are the first-line host defenders that engulf Mtb into phagosomes, which initiates lysosomal activity for degradation. However, the virulence factor of Mtb is able to inhibit phagolysosome fusion. The host immune system forms granulomas to contain the mycobacterium at the site of inflammation. This, in turn, causes a necrotic state and causes tissue damage from the prolonged inflammation. Studies suggest that the host's …

Regulation Of Ccr7 Signaling Events By G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinases 2 And 3, Anahi Sanchez May 2025

Regulation Of Ccr7 Signaling Events By G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinases 2 And 3, Anahi Sanchez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) can bind multiple ligands, leading to differential signaling events termed biased signaling. C-C chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7) is a GPCR known to have biased signaling between the two ligands it binds to, CCL19 and CCL21. Binding of C-C Chemokine Ligand 19 (CCL19) promotes a high level of CCR7 phosphorylation, while CCL21 leads to a much lower level of CCR7 phosphorylation; findings observed in HEK and dendritic cells. GPCR kinases (GRKs), which can control the phosphorylation patterns of a GPCR, are hypothesized to regulate biased signaling of a receptor. GRK expression differs between cell lines and cell …

Kernel Density Estimation And Convolution, Nicholas Tenkorang May 2025

Kernel Density Estimation And Convolution, Nicholas Tenkorang

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) is a widely used technique for estimating the probability density function of a random variable. In this study, we revisit KDE through the lens of convolution and extend this perspective to special cases such as positive, bounded and heavy tailed random variables. Building on this foundation, we propose a novel simulation-based density estimation method that generates new data by adding noise to observed values and then smoothing the resulting histogram using splines. A minor adjustment to natural cubic splines is required to ensure nonnegative estimates. The noise is drawn from a class of bounded polynomial kernel …
