Monitoring Results For Pfiesteria Piscidida And Pfiesteria-Like Organisms From Virginia Waters In 1998, Harold G. Marshall, David W. Seaborn, Jennifer Wolny
Virginia Journal of Science
Results of an extensive 1998 monitoring program for the presence of Pfiesteria-like organisms (PLO) in Virginia estuaries indicate these dinoflagellates are widely distributed in both the water column, and as cysts in the sediment, however Pfiesteria piscicida was not detected at this time. The highest concentrations of PLO were in estuaries along the Virginia shore line of the Potomac River, and in western Chesapeake Bay estuaries from the Little Wicomico River to the Rappahannock River. The most common PLO included Cryptoperidiniopsis sp. and Gymnodinium galatheanum. The lowest PLO concentrations were at ocean side locations. PLO were also …

Analysis Of Binomial Data Obtained From Plant-Tissue-Culture Studiesusing Generalized Linear Models, M. Zi̇ya Firat, Ahmet Onay
Turkish Journal of Biology
In biology, the objective of research scientists is to gain an understanding of biological rela-tionships through experimentation. Statistical analyses are an essential part of biological research. Statistical methods used in biological research range from the very simple to the extremely complex. Consequently, caution should be taken when selecting an appropriate statistical method. Data obtained from plant-cell and tissue-culture studies can generally be placed into one of two or more groups. In other words, a dependent variable consists of placing an observation into a category. The purpose of this paper was to present statistical methods suitable for the analysis of binomial …
Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş
Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş
Turkish Journal of Biology
Cytokines are cellular regulatory proteins. They are secreted by specific cells, which are activated by certain stimuli, in different tissues. Cytokines control numerous biological functions and one of their important effects is on cell division. Although some of the cytokines have a positive effect on the cell cycle, some play a negative role. The positive and negative effects of cytokines depend upon the cell type. In this paper, the moleculer mechanisms of cytokine effects on the cell cycle are examined.

: The pollen mitosis and pollen morphology of hexaploid (2n=24) Bellevalia edirnensis Özhatay & Mathew were examined. Microspores exhibited variation in size, and the exine and aperture developed before pollen mitosis began. During pollen mitosis, polarization, asymmetric styles and normal divisions were observed together with some abnormalities. During polarization of the microspore both nucleus migration and vacuole formation were common. The generative nucleus was in the proximal pole and the vegetative nucleus was in the distal pole. It was also determined that the mature pollens were 2-celled, the shape of the pollens was sphaeroidea, the type of the pollens was …
The Effect Of Different Warm-Downs On Heart Rate Recovery And Muscular Lactic Acid Removal, Alison Jean Perkins
The Effect Of Different Warm-Downs On Heart Rate Recovery And Muscular Lactic Acid Removal, Alison Jean Perkins
Honors Theses
Competitive swimmers and coaches have had varying ideas about what exercises constitute an appropriate warm-down. However, there is much agreement about what a warm-down should achieve. A good warm-down should do three things. First, a warm-down should be successful in returning the swimmer's elevated heart rate to the resting heart rate level in a relatively short period of time. Second, the warm-down should flush lactic acid out of the muscles as quickly as possible, and restore blood lactate to baseline levels. Finally the warm-down should contribute to improved athletic performances.
In this experiment, it was expected that a decreasing intensity …
Establishing A Link Between Mapk Pathways And Hormones Signal Transduction In Plants, Marc Meulener
Establishing A Link Between Mapk Pathways And Hormones Signal Transduction In Plants, Marc Meulener
Honors Theses
Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathways are ubiquitous among eukaryotes, and are involved in the transduction of various extracellular signals. In mammals, three MAPK pathways have been identified, two of these respond to stress, and one can stimulate growth and differentiation. MAPKs have also been found in plants, and it has been suggested that a MAPK pathway may be involved in the signal transduction of auxin and cytokinin, two plant hormones that stimulate growth and differentiation. However, at this time, there is no conclusive evidence supporting this hypothesis. By studying the effect ofMAPKK's of both plant and animal origin in …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Developmental changes in the nicotinic responses of ciliary ganglion neurons. J. Neurophysiol. 81: 111–120, 1999. The accumulation of functional neurotransmitter receptors by neurons during development is an essential part of synapse formation. Chick ciliary ganglion neurons express two kinds of nicotinic receptors. One is abundant, contains the α7 gene product, rapidly desensitizes, and binds α-bungarotoxin. The other is less abundant, contains multiple gene products (α3, β4, α5, and β2 subunits), slowly desensitizes, and binds the monoclonal antibody mAb 35. Rapid application of agonist to freshly dissociated neurons elicits responses from both classes of receptors. Between embryonic days 8 and 15, …

Gene Flow Among Habitat Patches On A Fragmented Landscape In The Spider Argiope Trifasciata (Araneae: Araneidae), Martina G. Ramirez, Kirsten E. Haakonsen
Biology Faculty Works
The banded garden spider (Argiope trifasciata) is a common orb weaver of old field habitats in the United States. In this study, we determined levels of genetic variability and gene flow among seven populations in central Pennsylvania, based on variation at eight allozyme loci. Mean heterozygosity (observed) per population was 7.5% and mean polymorphism was 39.3%, consistent with levels of variability in other arthropods. Values of GST for the four polymorphic loci (mean GST=0.011) suggest that gene flow prevents the genetic differentiation of these populations. The average number of migrants per generation (Nm) among …

Coordinate Transcriptional Control In The Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Sulfolobus Solfataricus, Cynthia Haseltine, Rafael Montalvo-Rodriguez, Elisabetta Bini, Audrey Carl, Paul H. Blum
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The existence of a global gene regulatory system in the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus is
described. The system is responsive to carbon source quality and acts at the level of transcription to coordinate
synthesis of three physically unlinked glycosyl hydrolases implicated in carbohydrate utilization. The specific
activities of three enzymes, an a-glucosidase (malA), a b-glycosidase (lacS), and an a-amylase, were reduced
4-, 20-, and 10-fold, respectively, in response to the addition of supplementary carbon sources to a minimal
sucrose medium. Western blot analysis using anti-a-glucosidase and anti-b-glycosidase antibodies indicated
that reduced enzyme activities resulted exclusively from …

Bacterial Growth State Distinguished By Single-Cell Protein Profiling: Does Chlorination Kill Coliforms In Municipal Effluent?, David Rockabrand, Teresa Austin, Robyn Kaiser, Paul H. Blum
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Municipal effluent is the largest reservoir of human enteric bacteria. Its public health significance, however,
depends upon the physiological status of the wastewater bacterial community. A novel immunofluorescence
assay was developed and used to examine the bacterial growth state during wastewater disinfection. Quantitative
levels of three highly conserved cytosolic proteins (DnaK, Dps, and Fis) were determined by using
enterobacterium-specific antibody fluorochrome-coupled probes. Enterobacterial Fis homologs were abundant
in growing cells and nearly undetectable in stationary-phase cells. In contrast, enterobacterial Dps homologs
were abundant in stationary-phase cells but virtually undetectable in growing cells. The range of variation in
the abundance of …

Five Myofibrillar Lesion Types In Eccentrically Challenged, Unloaded Rat Adductor Longus Muscle—A Test Model, Joyce L. Thompson, Edward Michael Balog, Robert H. Fitts, Danny A. Riley
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Sarcomere disruptions are observed in the adductor longus (AL) muscles following voluntary reloading of spaceflown and hindlimb suspension unloaded (HSU) rat, which resemble lesions in eccentrically challenged muscle. We devised and tested an eccentric contraction (ECCON) test system for the 14-day HSU rat AL. Six to 7 hours following ECCON, ALs were fixed to allow immunostaining and electron microscopy (EM). Toluidine blue-stained histology semithin sections were screened for lesion density (#/mm2). Serial semithin sections from the ECCON group were characterized for myosin immunointensity of lesions. Five myofibrillar lesion types were identified in histological semithin sections: focal contractions; wide …

The Chondrocranium Of The Mexican Burrowing Toad, Rhinophrynus Dorsalis, Charles C. Swart, Rafael O. De Sá
Biology Faculty Publications
The chondrocranium of Rhinophrynus dorsalis is described and illustrated. Autapomorphies of R. dorsalis are the presence of the symplectic cartilage and a cartilaginous process on the ascending process of the palatoquadrate. Synapomorphies of Rhinophrynus shared with the Pipidae are: (1) early formation of the lower jaw and (2) presence of a suprarostral plate. Alternative developmental pathways for the formation of the suprarostral plate are considered. Histological data indicates that the suprarostral plate forms from: (1) the early fusion of the cornua trabeculae with the suprarostral cartilages, (2) an anterior growth of the ethmold plate, and (3) subsequent fusion …

SUMMARY
Unity of modern Amphibians as a natural group
The monophyly of Lissamphibia has been previously questioned. Some authors suggested an independent origin of Gymnophiona based on the solid condition (= stegokrotaphy) of the caecilian …

Obtaining And Sampling Of High Quality Energetic-Protein Mixtures (Pottages) Of Tuber-Cereal-Leguminous Bases In The Candelaria Area, Maria Lilian Maldonado Chavez
Theses and Dissertations
Specially designed foodstuffs destined for children of weaning age in the community of Candelaria were developed and evaluated biologically. These victuals had as bases combinations of tubers-cereals-legumes of high nutritional quality to be implemented in the home. Based on the availability of food and alimentary habits of the region, seven mixtures were formulated of triples and quadruples containing tubers (potato, oca, papaliza, and isano); cereals (rice, wheat, corn, and quinua); and legumes (tarwi, broad bean, and peanut). The cereal-leguminous proportion was maintained as one complement and the addition of the tubers. These mixes were subjected to biological tests, obtaining incremental …

Pfiesteria Piscicida And Dinoflagellates Similar To Pfiesteria, Harold G. Marshall
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Pfiesteria pisiccida is a microscopic, unicellular organism that is classified as both a mixotrophic and heterotrophic dinoflagellate, which has been associated with both fish deaths and a cause of human illness (Burkholder et al., 1992; Glasglow et al., 1995; Burkholder and Glasgow, 1997). This species possesses a complex life cycle that includes motile forms (e.g. zoospores, gametes, amoebae) and a cyst stage that may remain dormant in the sediment (Burkholder et al, 1995b). Pfiesteria piscicida is known to have toxin and non-toxin producing populations, where cyst transformation into the toxic motile zoospores may be initiated by the presence of certain …
Current Status Of Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet And Tropical Parula In Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park And Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Southern Texas, Timothy Brush
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
There are no published records of Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet (Camptostoma imberbe) and Tropical Parula (Parilla pitiayumi) nesting in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas since the late 1940s. In this 1996- 1998 study, both species were confirmed nesting at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet was also confirmed at Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park. Most Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet nests were between clumps of ball-moss (Tillandsia recurvata) in cedar elm (Ulmus crassifolia) trees, and nests were active from 21 March-23 September. Only fe. males build nests or incubate. Two-three young fledged per successful nest, but three nests were abandoned …

Atomic two-photon J = 0 ↔ J′ = 1 transitions are forbidden for photons of the same energy. This selection rule is related to the fact that photons obey Bose-Einstein statistics. We have searched for small violations of this selection rule by studying transitions in atomic Ba. We set a limit on the probability v that photons are in exchange-antisymmetric states: v < 1.2 × 10-7.

The tall grass prairie is one of the most degraded and fragmented ecosystems on earth. Interest in conserving, restoring, and reconstructing tallgrass prairie began early in the 1900s, and has increased dramatically since the 1960s. Early restoration and reconstruction efforts relied primarily on seed collected from prairie remnants near the planting site, but with the increase in prairie planting efforts came a greater demand for large quantities of affordable, viable seed of native prairie species. Following an increase in the use of cultivated varieties (cultivars) of seed, concerns over the loss of genetic integrity of local populations and low genetic …

Temporal And Spatial Variation In Abundance Of Migratory Birds At Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, Andrew Allen Kinsey
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Migratory birds spend a significant part of each year in transition between their breeding and resting grounds. During this transitional period migrants rely on stopover sites to provide them with the necessary habitat to replenish lost energy stores, rest, and wait for favorable weather conditions before continuing migration. The majority of stopover work related to passerines in North America has occurred along coastal migration routes. Meanwhile, relatively little work has been conducted at inland stopover sites, areas which may be equally important to migrating birds. Kennesaw Mountain is an isolated geographically prominent peak located in the foothills of the southern …
