The Crusades And Their Results On Civilization, Mary Eulalia Jul 1936

The Crusades And Their Results On Civilization, Mary Eulalia

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this thesis is to discuss the results of the Crusades, undertaken, for the recovery of the Holy Land from the Saracens and Turks, by the Western Nations of Europe. Though the conventional dates, (1095-1291), include the most active period of the Crusades, it is best to consider them as the medieval period in the long conflict between East and West. Most historians distinguish eight Crusades, four in the Holy Land, two against Egypt, one against Constantinople, and one against the Moslems in North Africa. However, we must think of these as simply high spots in one broad …

Political Contacts Or The Hebrews With Assyria And Babylonia, Alex Heidel Jun 1936

Political Contacts Or The Hebrews With Assyria And Babylonia, Alex Heidel

Concordia Theological Monthly

Ancient Palestine served as a bridge over which passed traders and armies from Egypt on the one hand and from Babylonia and Assyria on the other; and thus the Hebrews repeatedly came in contact with the peoples of the Nile and of the Tigris-Euphrates. These contacts were chiefly of a political, commercial, social, and religious nature. In the present paper it is not our aim to offer a comprehensive treatment of all of them; we shall rather turn aside from all the other phases and focus our attention on the political relations of God's chosen race with the people of …

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig: A Study In Biography And Background Based On Documentary Evidence And Family Tradition, Paul King May 1936

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig: A Study In Biography And Background Based On Documentary Evidence And Family Tradition, Paul King

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

It was my first intention to write a biography of my grandfather. This was to be an entirely creative piece of work, based on his Army discharge, an account of his death and burial in the local paper, and the traditions of the family. Because his life after 1875-when he left the 5th Cavalry was so closely connected with the history of Hays, the biography was to stop short, twenty-three years before his death. Hays City from 1875 to 1898, the people, the colorful English colonists east in Victoria, the Russian-Germans, the change of troops at the fort, the fort …

The History And Treatment Of The English Drama During The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Leonard Francis Sommers Apr 1936

The History And Treatment Of The English Drama During The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Leonard Francis Sommers

Bachelors’ Theses

Thia chapter will deal with the earlier sources of information about the dramatic companies. The provincial towns of England are the best sources of information about the English companies of drama. Reference to the drama usually appeared in the Court books of the corporation, also in the account books, or even letter-books. The reason for this is not hard to understand, for when a dramatic company visited a provincial town, their first duty was to present their license to the Mayor and also to his court of Aldermen, so that they could obtain permission to play. It is obvious therefore, …

Bachelors’ Theses

This paper is concerned primarily with the difficulties encountered by the United States while attempting to assert the international rights of her citizens and her ships upon the high seas during the years 1914-1918, when the situation was rendered so complicated by the machinations of belligerents engaged in a great World War.

Plautus: The Best Expression Of The Worst In Rome, 200 B.C., John Edward Hogan Apr 1936

Plautus: The Best Expression Of The Worst In Rome, 200 B.C., John Edward Hogan

Bachelors’ Theses

Just as there is satire from Demosthenes through Juvenal to G. K. Chesterton, so there is comedy from Aristophanes through Plautus to Oscar Wilde. To show that comedy can be the gentler brand of indictment will be the task of this, our paper. It is true that, in the case or the (comic) playwright, the aim, than that of the professed censor, is rather more vaguely reprehensive. One may not deny, however, that the serious reader finds in Plautus's comedies the rationes seminales of the three hundred years' "dying fall" of the Roman Empire. In the Plautine repertoire is the …

Sermon Study On 2 Cor. 7,4-10, Theo. Laetsch Mar 1936

Sermon Study On 2 Cor. 7,4-10, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the first section of his Second Epistle to the Corinthians, chap. 1-7, the apostle rejoices over the obedience of the Corinthians to the various instructions of the First Letter. At the some time he, as a faithful pastor, admonishes them to still greater zeal in sanctification. He concludes this section with a hymn of joy and gratitude, laying bare his very heart, his conflicting emotions, with a frankness possible only to one who places fullest confidence in his readers. The Eisenach Epistle for Laetare Sunday is part of this conclusion, which really begins with v. 2.

Some Contacts Of The Book Of Acts With The Every-Day Life Of Its Age, H. A. Keinath Feb 1936

Some Contacts Of The Book Of Acts With The Every-Day Life Of Its Age, H. A. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

New Testament Christianity, first garbed in the swaddling-clothes of Semitism, soon exchanged its outward dress for the more practical robes of Hellenism. Jesus of Nazareth was active in a little speck of ground on the edge of the mighty Roman Empire; His language was Aramaic, His disciples were Jews, His contacts and the intellectual atmosphere of the men among whom He moved were chiefly Jewish. Yet within a few years after His resurrection Christianity had gone beyond the sphere of distinctly Jewish surroundings and had begun its mission of world conquest. This explosion immediately required an accommodation in the field …

Mexican Arts And Crafts Since The Conquest Of Cortes, Marjorie I. Graham Jan 1936

Mexican Arts And Crafts Since The Conquest Of Cortes, Marjorie I. Graham

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Everyone interested in visiting Mexico should familiarize himself with its arts and crafts, for it has been truly said that "art is the expression of life,"1 and the whole Mexican civilization is inextricably interwoven with its arts. It is the purpose of this thesis, not to exhaust the subject treated, but rather to present the art of Mexico in such a way that students o f the subject, or prospective tourists, may feel the tremendous interest which Mexican arts warrant; that they may have a clearer view of the background, the civilization, both past and present, of our "next …
