Medicine Infected By Politics: The American Occupation Of Haiti, 1915-1934, Cooper Scherr
Medicine Infected By Politics: The American Occupation Of Haiti, 1915-1934, Cooper Scherr
Helene Lafrance Library Undergraduate Research Award
This article discusses the impact that politics and social beliefs have on the humanitarian goals of medicine, using the American occupation of Haiti (1915-1934) as a backdrop. First, the article explains how the United States intervened in Haiti in order to maintain its political hegemony in the Caribbean, develop Haiti as a new market for American investors, and civilize the supposedly "backwards" Haiti. Previously, historians have recognized the important role that medicine played during the occupation, but this article highlights how U.S. political, economic, and cultural motives distorted the practice of medicine in Haiti. For instance, from 1915-1922, the Americans …
Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
The history of taxonomy is not usually taught in modern biology classes, but it is necessary to understand the history of classification and science as a whole in order to better understand the processes of classification and thinking that are commonly taught at the college level. Through the exploration of the difficulties of publishing, Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, and three pre-Linnaean works from Pliny the Elder, Nehemiah Grew, and Rembert Dodoens, I have found that the history of the sciences has been largely distorted. The distortion appears to be of many factors, including the replacement of ideas, censorship from scholarly …
Less-Than-Lethal Self Defense Device With An Acoustic Element, Anthony Taibi
Less-Than-Lethal Self Defense Device With An Acoustic Element, Anthony Taibi
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
This creative capstone project involves the conception, design, and creation of a less-than-lethal self defense device with an integrated sound board to control the acoustic element. Theoretically, this device is capable of deterring potential threats without causing any serious harm or any long-term damage. When starting this project, I was very focused on sonic warfare, and how to harness the power of ultrasonic and infrasonic sound waves to subdue to target; however, I concluded that using resonant frequencies to deter a human being is too dangerous, expensive, and can have negative effects for the user of the device if used …
In The Trenches: Marc Bloch, Robert Graves, And The Individual Experience Of French And British Soldiers During The First World War, Emily Beatty
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
By analyzing the memoirs of several different soldiers in the French and British armies during World War I, I will piece together the individual experience of the soldier. Focusing on three main soldiers, Marc Bloch, Henri Desagneaux, and Robert Graves, I will compare the differences between the French and British experiences in the war. Using secondary sources, I will show how these accounts align with scholarship on the individual experience during World War I.
What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha
What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The word “frontier” brings to mind certain connotations. The American public might think of Davy Crockett and his trademark coonskin cap, or of what came to be known as the Indian Wars as Americans pushed farther and farther west, conquering the rivers, plains, and mountains that lay just beyond colonial reach. But what was a frontier fort really like at the turn of the 19th Century? This paper explores that question through the study of archaeological artifacts left behind by the inhabitants of Fort Steuben. The fort, constructed in 1787, in what is now Steubenville, Ohio, was home to early …
Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas
Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Solar Minimum cycles and historical events
The catastrophic events of the late Holocene Era followed a cyclical pattern of Solar Minimum activity and described by ancient people in literature. Ancient literature documenting catastrophe is often unclear with catastrophic events mixed between fantasy and non-fiction, and consigned to mythology.
This project will demonstrate that environmental cycles impacting ancient civilizations were a result of cyclical patterns of Solar Minimum activity. Cyclical solar activity is historically observable, with warm periods lasting 540 years and cool periods lasting 400 years. The significance of the Solar Minimum activity occurrence shows patterns of civilization rise and …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY TO VOLUME I
RUSSIAN SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN
The Internet Research Agency (IRA) carried out the earliest Russian interference operations identified by the investigation–a social media campaign designed to provoke and amplify political and social discord in the United States. The IRA was based in St. Petersburg, Russia, and received funding from Russian oligarch Yevgeniy Prigozhin and companies he controlled. Priozhin is widely reported to have ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin [redacted]
In mid-2014, the IRA sent employees to the United States on an intelligence-gathering mission with instructions [redacted]
The IRA later used social media accounts and interest …

Cutting Through The Ranks: The Navy’S Forgotten Legacy, Cameron T. Sauers
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
The bearer of this sword was a member of a United States Navy that rapidly grew in power during the Civil War, increasing its enlistment 500% and developing the first ironclad ship. However, even as the Navy was in the midst of its transition, one thing remained in place: The U.S. Model 1852 Navy Officer’s Sword. The sword is still used in the Navy today, albeit for ceremonial purposes. Yet, for all that this sword symbolizes, very few scholars have given much attention to it or the sailors who used it in the Civil War. The common soldier has received …

Saruman As ‘Sophist’ Or Sophist Foil? Tolkien’S Wizards And The Ethics Of Persuasion, Chad Chisholm
Saruman As ‘Sophist’ Or Sophist Foil? Tolkien’S Wizards And The Ethics Of Persuasion, Chad Chisholm
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Persuasive speaking is an important part of J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction, and the wizards Gandalf and Saruman are often the most skilled orators and speakers in the Middle-earth stories. Literary critics and Tolkien scholars (including the author in his prior publications) have spent much time discussing how the oratory of the wizards helps to advance the narrative action within the stories as well as add depth to the wizards themselves and the other characters. Many critics describe the speech of Saruman as 'sophistry,' but does the white wizard really personify the rhetoric of the historical Sophists? The author explores this question, …

Whistleblowing In The Irish Military: The Cost Of Exposing Bullying And Sexual Harassment, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Grace Flynn
Whistleblowing In The Irish Military: The Cost Of Exposing Bullying And Sexual Harassment, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Grace Flynn
Articles
Whistleblowing has gained increasing media attention over the past 40 years, as incidents of abuse and wrongdoing associated with businesses, religious institutions, the media and politics have come to light. In this article, we investigate the consequences of a military whistleblower’s actions for both himself and the military institution that he was a part of. The case concerns former army officer Dr. Tom Clonan and his findings concerning the bullying and sexual harassment of female personnel in the Irish Defence Forces at the turn of the century. As these revelations came to light over 17 years ago we are able …
Re-Thinking The Weird (In The) West: Multi-Ethnic Literatures And The Southwest, Jana M. Koehler
Re-Thinking The Weird (In The) West: Multi-Ethnic Literatures And The Southwest, Jana M. Koehler
English Language and Literature ETDs
My dissertation examines the genre of weird fiction, specifically texts that engage the concept of the Weird West. While authors such as Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft are often seen as the founders of this genre, I argue that ethnic and women writers, such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ishmael Reed, Leslie Marmon Silko, Lucha Corpi, and others, explore the hidden histories of the West and Southwest in ways that incite a rethinking of the weird. Most importantly, I seek to demonstrate how the weird is not only a literary genre but a literary aesthetic and methodology that women and …
The Case Of The Religious Gay Blood Donor, Brian Soucek
The Case Of The Religious Gay Blood Donor, Brian Soucek
William & Mary Law Review
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibits sexually active gay men from donating blood. This Article envisions an original legal challenge to that rule: not the predictable equal protection suit, but a religious freedom claim brought by a gay man who wants to give blood as an act of charity. Because the FDA’s regulations substantially burden his exercise of religion—requiring a year of celibacy as its price—the FDA would be forced to show that its policy is the least restrictive means of preventing HIV transmission through the blood supply. Developments in testing technology and the experience of other countries suggest …

Water Walking As A New Mode Of Free Surface Skipping, Randy Craig Hurd, Jesse Belden, Allan F. Bower, Sean Holekamp, Michael A. Jandron, Tadd T. Truscott
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Deformable elastomeric spheres are evaluated experimentally as they skip multiple times over a lake surface. Some spheres are embedded with small inertial measurement units to measure the acceleration experienced during water surface impact. A model for multiple impact events shows good agreement between measured acceleration, number of skipping events and distanced traveled. The experiment reveals a new mode of skipping, “water walking”, which is observed for relatively soft spheres impacting at low impact angles. The mode occurs when the sphere gains significant angular velocity over the first several impacts, causing the sphere to maintain a deformed, oblong shape. The behavior …
Foreign Fighters: Examining How Foreign Fighters Will Become A Greater Threat To Europe If Fighters Are Left In Former Isil Territories, Joshua Pickett
Foreign Fighters: Examining How Foreign Fighters Will Become A Greater Threat To Europe If Fighters Are Left In Former Isil Territories, Joshua Pickett
European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium
This paper will explore the challenges presented by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, (ISIL) and, in particular, the return of foreign fighters to their home countries within Europe. The main question is whether these returning fighters still present a threat to Europe and how member states can cope with this situation. The transition between their presence to the battle ground and an ordinary life is a parameter that needs to be studied, as well as the role of their families and their direct environment. At the end, I will propose some policy recommendations that the European Union …
Supranational Or Compartmental: Applying The Question Of European Union Identity To The Topic Of Disinformation, Eric Myhre
European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium
The proliferation of disinformation is not a new phenomenon. However, the increasingly interconnected nature of the global environment means that disinformation is more effective now than ever before. Western societies are simultaneously experiencing a growing political stratification and third-party intervention in their respective democratic processes and institutions. State actors have utilized social media, hybrid warfare tactics, and automated disinformation tools to exacerbate divisions in society. Therefore, it is crucial that such societies develop sufficient capabilities to proportionately counter third-party interventionism. This paper aims to examine the relative counterdisinformation measures taken by the European Union (EU) in order to draw comparisons …

Analyzing The Concept Of Human Security And R2p As A Part Of Eu Foreign Policy., Chelsea Jones
European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium
The traditional notion of security has changed significantly since the end of the Cold War. We now live in a world where war is no longer being fought primarily against nations but within nations. The concept of human security put forward by the United Nations is viewed through the lens of the individual rather than the state. By having a right to the “freedom from fear” and “freedom from want”, this paper examines how EU foreign and defense policies have evolved since human security and the Responsibility to Protect have emerged. This paper analyzes both concepts against the five main …

Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas
Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
There has been only limited research into the musics of Latin America as a whole, and the amount of musicological investigation decreases when referring to any specific country. This presentation will provide a glimpse into the rich and diverse musical output of Colombian composers in the twentieth century. It begins with a brief overview of Latin American society and Colombian musical influences and social structures. Important Colombian composers such as Guillermo Uribe Holguín are discussed, as well as general trends in classical composition at the time. The musical output in Colombia is astounding and at least rivals, if not surpasses, …

Mathematical Modeling: Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer
Mathematical Modeling: Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer
Student Scholar Showcase
Mathematical models are systems using mathematical concepts to explain various problems. Mathematical models examine realistic issues such as the different outcomes of wars and fictional problems such as the upcoming zombie apocalypse. The original predictor models of warfare were the Lanchester models, while the zombie apocalypse is a fictional expansion upon mathematical models for infectious diseases. In this paper, we examined and compared the basic versions of these dynamic models by analyzing each model’s set of variables, assumptions, and objectives. The basic versions of the Lanchester equations are the area aimed model and the aimed fire model. While the zombie …
"Get Tough!": A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski
"Get Tough!": A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski
Student Research Symposium
While participation in youth sport is often linked with positive psychosocial and physical outcomes (Holt et al., 2017), this context can also cultivate ideals that lead to the development of unethical beliefs and unsafe sport practices (Al-Yaarbi & Kavussanu, 2017). The sport ethic is described as the deviant overconformity by an athlete to fit societal expectations of a sport's high-performance culture (Hughes & Coakley, 1991). Strong beliefs in the sport ethic can lead to moral disengagement, antisocial behavior, and treating sport like warfare (Shields, Funk, & Bredemeier, 2015). Although the sport ethic has been widely studied in competitive adult sport, …

Gone With The Wind And The Lost Cause, Caitlin Hall
Gone With The Wind And The Lost Cause, Caitlin Hall
Honors College Theses
Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind is usually considered a sympathetic portrayal of the suffering and deprivation endured by Southerners during the Civil War. I argue the opposite, that Mitchell is subverting the Southern Myth of the Lost Cause, exposing it as hollow and ultimately self-defeating.
The Cold War And The Discipline Of Negotiation, Bazil Cunningham
The Cold War And The Discipline Of Negotiation, Bazil Cunningham
Global Tides
The Cold War period is perhaps one of the most tumultuous periods in modern history apart from the calamity of World War I and World War II. The juxtaposition of two world superpowers and the proliferation of nuclear arms resulted in extreme tension, uncertainty, and fear during the Cold War era. Although nuclear warfare was averted, experts all unanimously agree that the world barely escaped unscathed. This paper will provide detail surrounding the history of the Cold World Era, an in-depth discussion regarding the application of Negotiation theory to this conflict, and any conclusions that can be drawn. The synthesis …
