The principal objective of this study is to bring up to date information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship of O. lagophilus in western North America. Notes on life history and disease transmission potential are included.

Data and information were obtained from three sources: (1) natural history collections and field records at Brigham Young University over the past twenty years; (2) the Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Hamilton, Montana; and (3) published literature.

All available collection records are presented in a table from which information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship was extracted. O. lagophilus is known …

Tenebrionidae Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site, Vasco M. Tanner, Willis A. Packham

The intent of this study conducted over a period of three years was to ( 1 ) provide descriptions of the species of tenebrionids found at the Nevada Test Site, (2) determine their relative abundance, (3) determine their seasonal activity, and (4) ascertain their plant community relationships.

A total of 14,650 beetles representing 46 kinds of tenebrionids was collected with sunken can traps, by hand, and ultra-violet light. Collections were made at regular intervals in the following plant communities: Larrea-Franseria, Lycium, Atriplex-Kochia, Grayia-Lycium (disturbed and undisturbed areas), Salsola, Coleogyne, Pinyon-Juniper, and Mixed.

This paper reports on responses lo habitat and thermoregulotion exhibited by three species of toads, Bufo omericanus, B. hemiophrys and 8. cognalus, under artificial conditions. The response of the toads to sparse, medium, and dense vegetative cover was investigated by establishing artificial cover types in a sheet-metal enclosure. Each of the three species spent more time in the dense cover than i11 sparse or medium cover. A second experiment to determine if the toads would be attracted by odor to samples of mud, water, and vegetation from their respective ranges suggested that the toads moved randomly to the habitat samples. …

TRADITIONALLY, wheatbelt farmers have looked upon sheep as being subsidiary, or at best, complementary to their main activity, wheat growing.

Because there has been a mistaken belief that clover would not grow, these farmers have depended upon native grasses and crop remains (stubble) for sheep feed, a practice which has put a limit to the number of sheep a property could support.

Fifty-three Holstein heifers were used to study the effects of oxytocin administered alone and in combination with various gonadotropins on the weights and progesterone contents of corpora lutea. Pituitary gonadotropin levels were compared in untreated and oxytocin-treated heifers at three stages of the estrous cycle.

Oxytoein injections on Days 2 through 6 significantly reduced the weights and total progesterone contents but not the progesterone concentrations of glands removed on Day 7. The concurrent administration of either purified bovine luteinizing hormone (LH) or human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) significantly increased these parameters from the oxytocin treatment levels to normal or supra-normal values. …

The present study was undertaken to test and evaluate the various taxonomic arrangements of the family, to discover some of the trends of behavioral evolution, and to provide a basis for future workers to use in naming, describing, and evaluating the behavioral patterns observed in waterfowl.

The major sexual behavior patterns of the species of Anatidae are reviewed and summarized, for the purpose of clarifying evolutionary relationships in the family, tracing the evolution of behavior patterns through various taxa, and evaluating the importance of certain behavior patterns as potential isolating mechanisms.

The dabbling ducks grade almost imperceptibly into the pochard group considered here, and whether Marmaronetta and Rhodonessa should be included in one tribe or the other may be open to some question. As here constituted, the tribe includes 16 species of almost world-wide distribution which differ from the preceding group in several minor details. The hind toe has a larger lobe than occurs in the dabbling ducks, and it presumably aids in diving.
