Litter Size And Proportion Of Females In The Offspring Of Multiparous Rats With Varying Uterine Metabolic Levels, A. B. Schutz

The rate of _TTC reduction by the uterine tissue of rats was determined at specific stages of the oestrous cycle, and in successive cycles at the same stage. Individual females showed a characteristic level of reaction to _TTC. Mothers whose uteri had a high reaction rate with _TTC produced litters with a higher percentage of female pups than did mothers with a low level of reaction. Previous studies have shown that _TTC reduction rate represents a metabolic activity of uterine tissue that is induced by oestrogens.

Too often statistics is considered as something magical which can restore order out of chaos and perhaps absolve the experimenter from mistakes in logic and procedure. Dairy scientists have known for a number of years that diacetyl is one of the principle flavor components of butter, buttermilk, and cheese cultures. Of the tests which have been introduced to determine diacetyl, one of the first was the heavy metal gravimetric method. This procedure involved distillation of the diacetyl from the mother substance. The most common derivative formed was nickel dimethylglyoximate. Principle disadvantage of this method were that large amounts of sample were required for steam distillation when the products were low in diacetyl. THE original home of stinkwort is the Mediterranean region, including northern France. Apparently the first Australian record was at Onkaparinga in South Australia about 90 years ago.

Efforts were made to keep it in bounds during the years immediately following introduction, but it continued to spread and is now f i r m ly established in all agricultural districts of South Australia.

It also covers large tracts of land in New South Wales and Victoria and occurs in most districts of Western Australia.

While in no way passing judgments on the quality of the investigations which have been published, there is one conclusion that must be reached and this is that there is room for further investigations. The studies which form the basis of this paper were undertaken to widen the general range of information on the avian kidney and its associated osseous cradle. In addition to the discussion, numerous photographs and diagrams are submitted to clarify and support the text. The present paper deals with with kidney and pelvic girdle of two species of sparrow: Zonotrichia leucophrys and Passer domesticus.

1. The nominate subspecies of E. granulosus (Batsch, 1786) is redesignated from the type locality, Europe.

2. Five subspecies of E. granulosus are described from South African carnivores: E. g. granulosus, E. g. africanus, E. g. felidis, E. g. lycaontis and E. g. ortleppi.

3. E. g. granulosus has so far only been recovered from the Transvaal; E. g. ortleppi appears to be restricted to the Transvaal; E. g. africanus occurs in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal; E. g. lycaontis and E. g. felidis like their definitive hosts are restricted to the Transvaal.

Two new species of Microsporidea, Plistophora salmonae from steelhead and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and Plistophora cepedianae from gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) are described. Schizonts to spores of P. cepedianae were found at one time within the same cyst, while only sporonts and spores of P. salmonae were found within the cyst. An illustrated synopsis of the known Microsporidea of freshwater and euryhaline fishes is given.

In March, 1962 this laboratory received some goldfish for disease diagnosis from Mr. Richard Rice, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Seven of 29 fish examined were infected with Eimeria. These fish had long, whitish, opaque fecal casts hanging from the anus. The casts were composed almost entirely of oocysts. When shed, they sank to the bottom and looked somewhat like "spent" tapeworms (Figs. 1, 2). The infected fish were very lethargic and their intestines were swollen with contained fluid. Although I believe that the Eimeria is pathogenic, a heavy infection of other parasites made this difficult to determine. These fish had apparently …

Historical information, survey records, and relict vegetation were used as sources of data for determining the nature of the presettlement vegetation of Pavant, Round, and Juab Valleys in central Utah. The foothills were covered with bunch grasses (principally Agropyron spicatum and Poa secunda), scattered junipers (Juniperus utahensis), and sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate). Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii) was common on level areas within the foothills. This study was initiated to investigate the distribution patterns of two species of pocket gophers, Thomomys umbrinus albicaudatus Hall and T. talpoides wasatchensis Durrant whose ranges come together in the Hobble Creek area, Utah. The effect of certain ecological factors upon their distribution was determined. The ecological factors included: vegetation and land use, soil, moisture and exposure, hybridization and interspecific competition. From morphological examination no interbreeding was detected even though the breeding seasons of the two species correspond. A limited area was found where the ranges of the two species are in contact. A lack of available moisture was determined …

Serotonin is a normal constituent of the brain and has been claimed to act as a neurohormonal or regulatory agent in nerve transmission. Previous workers have only studied its whole brain or subcellular particulate distribution. Because the brain itself is divided into many distinct ganglia and nuclei, the distribution of serotonin in these sites is considered to be of greater importance than either the whole brain or subcellular distribution. This paper is a study of the distribution of serotonin in particular brain sites in rats with normal and elevated levels of the amine, with and without electroshock treatment. The results …
