The Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in Garden County near the heart of the Nebraska Sandhill Lakes Region. This country is principally rolling mid-grass prairie, the hills reaching a height of as much as 200 feet above the wet meadows. A good portion of the refuge's 46,000 acres consists of these lush meadows which are pocked by marshes, potholes and small lakes. Natural drainage from the surrounding sandhills and springs in the basins feed these water bodies.

The lakes are quite shallow, reaching a depth of perhaps 15 feet. They are alkaline yet are not so highly basic …

Annual And Season Weight Changes In A Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel Population, Itasca State Park, Minnesota, Bonnie M. Hohn, William H. Marshall

The ecology of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Citellus tridecemlineotus) has been under investigation since 1954 on the grounds of the University of Minnesota Forestry and Biological Station located in Itasca State Park, Minnesota. Over the 11-year period, data have been collected on individuals of this small, relatively isolated, population. Studies of population dynamics, movements, activity patterns, and weights have been stressed, chiefly during the three summer months of June, July, and August. In 1964, the senior author carried out field work for the entire season from April 30 to September 14.

Most of the Australian States have a comprehensive system of inland waterways, Western Australia, however, is in a less fortunate position. True, the maps of the State show many rivers, but in much of the southern, more populous part, with no summer rain and no winter snow, the majority are virtually a chain of waterholes during the long summer months. BECAUSE of its upright growth habit, it is often thought that rose clover may require some form of specialised grazing management.

It has also been said that the sheep find the plant and in particular the seed head, undesirable in the dry stages.

However, more recent observations refute this (Bailey 1966). The present commonly-grown strains of rose clover are later flowering generally than the medics or Geraldton subterranean clover and stay green later in the season.

THE performances of broiler flocks in the latter part of 1964 were below standard. Low body weights and a high incidence of gizzard erosion were common on farms.

In man and other mammals including the mouse, spermatozoa are produced in the testis. Before they are mature, spermatozoa leave the testis and pass through a system of excurrent ducts where they acquire an enhanced capacity for fertilization (Young, 1931; Blandau and Rumery, 1961). These ducts include the tubuli recti, rete testis, ductuli efferentes, ductus epididymidis, and ductus deferens. The contribution of individual parts of this excurrent duct system to spermatozoan maturation is poorly understood.

Some Helminths Of Itasca Park Fishes, Omer R. Larson

A helminth survey was conducted'. on 12 species of fish taken from the waters of Itasca State Park. An abundant and varied helminth fauna was found, with 3 l parasitic forms identified to genus or species. By taxonomic groups these included, 20 trematodes, 5 cestodes, 2 acanthocephalans, and 4 nematodes. Every fish examined was parasitized, but yellow perch and rockbass possessed the greatest variety of helminths. Based on the results of this survey, several aspects of parasite life cycles, geographic distribution, and hast specificity are discussed.

Three other ewes had died after a similar sickness lasting about four days.

Tomales Bay is situated in Marin County, about 40 miles north-west of San Francisco. This shallow bay averages about 1.5 miles in width and is about 12.6 miles in length, with an average depth of 12 feet (Johnson, Bryant and Hedgpeth, 1961). Oyster and herring comprise the main fishing industry, although the bay contributes a great amount of perch, smelt, halibut, and shark. Gill and seine nets are the most common gear used by fishermen.

The Minnedosa study area is located in the southwestern portion of Manitoba just south of the town of Minnedosa. It is 90 square miles in size and roughly square in shape. The Aspen Parkland, in which the study area is located, is characterized by gently rolling terrain and black soils. Mixed farming is the rule with emphasis on small grain production consisting of wheat, barley, and oats. Roughly 50 percent of the water areas in the parkland are ringed with aspen, Populus tremuloides, and large blocks of aspen are interspersed throughout the area. An evaluation of the relationship between several measures of semen quality and fertility of bulls mated under natural conditions has been conducted over a three-year period. Semen was collected three different times with an electro-ejaculator from bulls used in the fertility tests. Collections were made at weekly intervals. Fertility was evaluated by mating bulls to heifers starting about three days after the last collection. Semen quality refers to the percent abnormals and the percent motility evaluated at the time of collection. Fertility was measured by the proportion of heifers that settled at natural service. Several multiple regression equations were calculated. …

This monograph summarizes the known information on taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, hosts, location in the host, pathogenicity, geographic distribution, and cross-transmission studies of the 196 named species of coccidia of rodents. These include 176 species of Eimeria, 9 of Isospora, 3 of Wenyonella, 2 each of Cryptosporidium and Klossiella, and 1 each of Dorisiella, Caryospora, Tyzzeria, and Klossia. In addition, similar data are given for those forms for which insufficient information is available to justify assigning them names.

It provides not only a faunistic and floristic study of areas having a high and low surface radiation, but also includes a consideration of their general ecology.
