On The Convergence Of Transportation And Power Systems In Smart And Connected Communities, Kevin A. Melendez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Even though the total number of light-duty vehicles in the U.S. is expected to increase by 2030, total fuel consumption is expected to significantly decrease in the same timeframe. This contradictory behavior is in part explained by the increasing utilization of electricity as the primary source of energy in the transportation sector. Due to its potential to decrease dependency on fossil fuels, electric transportation has become a promising approach to alleviate the increasing environmental crisis. Passenger car markets are expected to experience a flood of new Electric vehicles (EVs) in the next few years. EVs are considered effective resources to …

Engineering Management and Systems Faculty Publications

Globalization has exacerbated the need for engineers who are capable of working in a cross-cultural environment. Multinational companies continuously seek for engineers who are interculturally competent and capable of conducting business successfully in a cross-cultural environment. However, the skills required to be successful in a multicultural environment are difficult to be taught in the traditional classroom. One of the most effective approaches to acquiring intercultural competency skills is through experiential learning. It is, therefore, not surprising that most colleges all over the world are devoting resources towards the internationalization of their classrooms and the campus community. This ensures that students …

Short-Term Truckload Spot Rates' Prediction In Consideration Of Temporal And Between-Route Correlations, Wei Xiao, Chuan Xu, Hongling Liu, Hong Yang, Xiaobo Liu

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Truckload spot rate (TSR), defined as a price offered on the spot to transport a certain cargo by using an entire truck on a target transportation line, usually price per kilometer-ton, is a key factor in shaping the freight market. In particular, the prediction of short-term TSR is of great importance to the daily operations of the trucking industry. However, existing predictive practices have been limited largely by the availability of multilateral information, such as detailed intraday TSR information. Fortunately, the emerging online freight exchange (OFEX) platforms provide unique opportunities to access and fuse more data for probing the trucking …

Toilet Alarms: A Novel Application Of Latrine Sensors And Machine Learning For Optimizing Sanitation Services In Informal Settlements, Phillip Nicholas Turman-Bryant, Taylor Sharpe, Corey L. Nagel, Lauren Stover, Evan A. Thomas

Systems Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The cost-effectiveness and reliability of waste collection services in informal settlements can be difficult to optimize given the geospatial and temporal variability of latrine use. Daily servicing to avoid overflow events is inefficient, but dynamic scheduling of latrine servicing could reduce costs by providing just-in-time servicing for latrines. This study used cellular-connected motion sensors and machine learning to dynamically predict when daily latrine servicing could be skipped with a low risk of overflow. Sensors monitored daily latrine activity, and enumerators collected solid and liquid waste weight data. Given the complex relationship between latrine use and the need for servicing, an …

Thermophotovoltaic Systems For Achieving High-Solar-Fraction Hybrid Solar-Biomass Power Generation, CM Iftekhar Hussain, Aidan Duffy, Brian Norton 2020 Technological University Dublin

Thermophotovoltaic Systems For Achieving High-Solar-Fraction Hybrid Solar-Biomass Power Generation, Cm Iftekhar Hussain, Aidan Duffy, Brian Norton

Articles

Medium operating temperature hybrid solar-biomass TPV power plant design requires complex integration of multiple high temperature processes with low band-gap TPV cells. A 0.72 eV band-gap GaSb TPV cell has been used in thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems operating at temperatures above 1400 °C. Low band-gap TPV cells, such as InGaAs (Eg = 0.55 eV) and InAs (Eg = 0.36 eV) could enable a TPV system to operate optimally at temperatures ≈1000 °C. To examine this, two hybrid solar-biomass TPV system configurations are studied using TRNSYS simulation that incorporates a new algorithm for TPV. It is found that in a high solar …

Multilevel Reorder Strategy-Based Supply Chain Model, Hesamoddin Tahami, Hengameh Fakhravar 2020 Old Dominion University

Multilevel Reorder Strategy-Based Supply Chain Model, Hesamoddin Tahami, Hengameh Fakhravar

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

We investigate the stochastic integrated inventory model wherein the buyer's lead time demand follows the mixture of normal distributions. Due to the high acquisition cost of land, we assume that buyer's maximum permissible storage space is limited and therefore adds a space constraint to the respective inventory system. Besides, it is assumed that the manufacturing process is imperfect and produces defective units, and hence each lot received by the buyer contains percentage defectives. The paper also considers controllable lead time components and ordering cost for the system. Based on lead-time components, a multilevel reorder strategy-based supply chain model is developed …

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Mission assurance is a method to guarantee mission success against a known set of risks; mission assurance is generally represented as a probability against a threshold of acceptable performance. Human assurance can be considered as the likelihood of acceptable operator performance given a set of conditions that include the operator, the system, and the environment. Standard mission assurance models tend to assume a qualified crew, but do not include other aspects of the internal or external environment that may impact the reliability of the human operator. A human assurance model can be created that allows the exploration of the variability …

Tolerance Intervals For Time Series Models And Specifying Trimming/Winsorizing Cutoffs, Kedai Cheng 2020 University of Kentucky

Tolerance Intervals For Time Series Models And Specifying Trimming/Winsorizing Cutoffs, Kedai Cheng

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Confidence intervals are used to capture a parameter of interest, usually a mean or a quantile, at a specified confidence level. Prediction intervals are another practical interval that aim at making sound predictions of future values with some confidence. Although these are useful inference tools, neither of them gives people a plausible range of the sampled population. Tolerance intervals are such an inference tool that captures a specified proportion of the sampled population at a predetermined confidence level. In this dissertation, tolerance intervals for an autoregressive process with order p are constructed. In addition, a method of utilizing tolerance interval …
