The Utilization Of Shared Energy Storage In Energy Systems: Design, Modeling And Optimization, Rui Dai 2020 University of South Florida

The Utilization Of Shared Energy Storage In Energy Systems: Design, Modeling And Optimization, Rui Dai

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Energy storage (ES) plays a significant role in modern smart grids and energy systems. With the advances of ES technologies, efficiently applying ES to energy systems has become the bottleneck for achieving the benefits of ES. The traditional approach of utilizing ES is the so-called distributed framework in which there is a separate ES for each individual user. Due to the inherent limits in the distributed framework such as cost inefficiency and space limitations, many studies have promoted to utilize a shared ES in energy systems to further exploit the potentials of ES. However, current studies always focus on maximizing …

Efficient Neural Architecture Search With Multiobjective Evolutionary Optimization, Maria Gabriela Baldeón Calisto

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Deep neural networks have become very successful at solving many complex tasks such as image classification, image segmentation, and speech recognition. These models are composed of multiple layers that have the capacity to learn increasingly higher-level features, without prior handcrafted specifications. However, the success of a deep neural network relies on finding the proper configuration for the task in hand. Given the vast number of hyperparameters and the massive search space, manually designing or fine-tuning deep learning architectures requires extensive knowledge, time, and computational resources.

There is a growing interest in developing methods that automatically design a neural network´s architecture, …

Civilian Pepper Spray For Self Defense: Understanding User Perception And Impact Of Design On User Performance, David Strybel, Anil R. Kumar

Faculty Publications

Pepper spray is widely used in the US, and is marketed as an effective self-defense device. While pepper spray can be useful in deterring an attacker, many pepper spray owners do not have any experience using it. There is a dearth of published studies that focus on civilian pepper-spray use, not to mention first time pepper-spray users. A study to analyze pepper-spray designs with first-time users, to see how the design, specifically the safety mechanism, affects response time and overall performance would be helpful. The study was conducted in 2 parts – a survey to understand user perception, and a …

A Markov Chain Approach For Forecasting Progression Of Opioid Addiction, Abhijit Gosavi, Susan L. Murray, N. Karagiannis

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The U.S. is currently facing an opioid crisis. Naltrexone is a common treatment for drug addiction; it reduces the desire to take opiates. However, addicts often stop treatment or continue to use opioids while in treatment. This results in increased fatalities and associated costs. A Markov-chain model is presented to analyze the progression of opioid addiction to assist the medical community in developing appropriate treatments. The model includes patients who continue opiate use while on naltrexone (blocked patients) and those who use opiates after missing naltrexone doses (unblocked patients). The other types of patients are abstinent (the best-case scenario) and …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The role of human-machine teams in society is increasing, as big data and computing power explode. One popular approach to AI is deep learning, which is useful for classification, feature identification, and predictive modeling. However, deep learning models often suffer from inadequate transparency and poor explainability. One aspect of human systems integration is the design of interfaces that support human decision-making. AI models have multiple types of uncertainty embedded, which may be difficult for users to understand. Humans that use these tools need to understand how much they should trust the AI. This study evaluates one simple approach for communicating …

Generalized Imperfect D2d Associations In Spectrum-Shared Cellular Networks Under Transmit Power And Interference Constraints, Redha M. Radaydeh, Fawaz S. Al-Qahtani, Abdulkadir Celik, Khalid A. Qaraqe

Faculty Publications

This paper studies imperfect underlay device-to-device (D2D) association in spectrum-shared cellular networks. It addresses important system and design interference constraints, processing load limitations and transmit power constraints at D2D terminals. The paper proposes decentralized schemes for D2D communication between D2D terminals when downlink channel resources can be reused in the D2D network. The D2D transmitters are characterized considering their processing load limitation and allocated transmit power constraints. Moreover, the downlink channels that can be reused in the D2D network are quantified while meeting interference constraints imposed by the primary cellular network. Two schemes to identify reusable channels, which vary in …

Cost Estimating Using A New Learning Curve Theory For Non-Constant Production Rates, Dakotah Hogan, John J. Elshaw, Clay M. Koschnick, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Adedeji B. Badiru, Shawn M. Valentine 2020 Air Force Cost Analysis Agency

Cost Estimating Using A New Learning Curve Theory For Non-Constant Production Rates, Dakotah Hogan, John J. Elshaw, Clay M. Koschnick, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Adedeji B. Badiru, Shawn M. Valentine

Faculty Publications

Traditional learning curve theory assumes a constant learning rate regardless of the number of units produced. However, a collection of theoretical and empirical evidence indicates that learning rates decrease as more units are produced in some cases. These diminishing learning rates cause traditional learning curves to underestimate required resources, potentially resulting in cost overruns. A diminishing learning rate model, namely Boone’s learning curve, was recently developed to model this phenomenon. This research confirms that Boone’s learning curve systematically reduced error in modeling observed learning curves using production data from 169 Department of Defense end-items. However, high amounts of variability in …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The accuracy of acceleration prediction can be effectively improved by the driver's memory in car-following behavior. A new car-following model based on the General Motors (GM) and the gate control unit (GRU) is proposed. The car-following data between small vehicles with similar driving behavior are obtained by data preprocessing. The established model is calibrated by the car-following data, and the optimal parameters and structure of the model are determined. According to car-following characteristics, the effectiveness of model is verified by simulation. It is confirmed that the model has high robustness and improved simulation accuracy comparing with the traditional models.
