Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a multiobjective environmental economic power dispatch problem has been converted into a single-objective optimization problem using the weighted sum method. For the solution of the converted problem, the gravitational search algorithm (GSA), which is one of the latest algorithms, has been used. In order to increase the performance of the GSA, opposite positioning quality has been added to the structure of the algorithm (OGSA). The obtained results show that the proposed algorithm has obtained better results and has provided a faster convergence. The 30-bus 6-generator test system has been selected for application of the OGSA. The transmission …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Multicarrier systems like the multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems are designed for maximum usability of available bandwidth. We use the MC-CDMA system with Alamouti's space time coding in this paper. We propose the genetic algorithm (GA) in order to calculate MC-CDMA receiver weights with two variation schemes. The proposed schemes reduce receiver complexity. The bit error rate and convergence rate are also improved by increasing the number of genes and chromosomes of the GA in both schemes as compared with conventional LMS based receivers of the MC-CDMA system. This is verified via simulations.

Optical cameras give detailed images in clear waters. However, in dark or turbid waters, information coming from electro-optical sensors is insufficient for accurate scene perception. Imaging sonars, also known as acoustic cameras, can provide enhanced target details in these scenarios. In this paper, a computationally efficient 2D high-frequency, forward-looking sonar image simulator is presented. Stages and requirements of the image formation process are explained in detail. For the postprocessing of the returned sonar signals, a novel computation engine is proposed based on the geometric structures of the simulated surfaces. By treating all the continuous surfaces separately, the simulator is able …

Modified Particle Swarm Optimization For Economic-Emission Load Dispatch Of Power System Operation, Mohd Noor Abdullah, Ab Halim Abu Bakar, Nasrudin Abd Rahim, Hazlie Mokhlis
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes a modified particle swarm optimization considering time-varying acceleration coefficients for the economic-emission load dispatch (EELD) problem. The new adaptive parameter is introduced to update the particle movements through the modification of the velocity equation of the classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The idea is to enhance the performance and robustness of classical PSO. The price penalty factor method is used to transform the multiobjective EELD problem into a single-objective problem. Then the weighted sum method is applied for finding the Pareto front solution. The best compromise solution for this problem is determined based on the fuzzy …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Texture classification, especially color texture classification, is considered a significant step in segmentation and object classification. The property of color and texture is important for characterizing objects in natural scenes. Fractal dimension (FD) has many applications in the field of image compression and image segmentation. A series of FD features, such as mean, standard deviation, lacunarity, kurtosis, skewness, entropy, inverse difference moment, contrast, energy, dissimilarity, homogeneity, and maximum probability, are investigated for obtaining the maximum discrimination. In this manuscript, a methodology is proposed that is based on FD and an extreme learning machine for color texture classification. Performance of the …

A thermal model for the power converter in a switched reluctance motor drive under natural air cooling is presented. In this compact model, the modeling of the power device is simplified reasonably. Based on the computational fluid dynamics and finite element tools, the thermal and fluid characteristics of the power converter are obtained. The experiment platform is then established, which verifies the correctness of the simulation model. To increase the reliability of the power converter, the layouts of devices on the heat sink and the placement direction of the heat sink are optimized without changing the heat sink shape. Four …

Reminiscing About 15 Years Of Interoperability Efforts, Herbert Van De Sompel, Michael L. Nelson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Over the past fifteen years, our perspective on tackling information interoperability problems for web-based scholarship has evolved significantly. In this opinion piece, we look back at three efforts that we have been involved in that aptly illustrate this evolution: OAI-PMH, OAI-ORE, and Memento. Understanding that no interoperability specification is neutral, we attempt to characterize the perspectives and technical toolkits that provided the basis for these endeavors. With that regard, we consider repository-centric and web-centric interoperability perspectives, and the use of a Linked Data or a REST/HATEAOS technology stack, respectively. We also lament the lack of interoperability across nodes that play …

Evaluation Of An Architectural-Level Approach For Finding Security Vulnerabilities, Mohammad Anamul Haque
Wayne State University Theses
The cost of security vulnerabilities of a software system is high. As a result,
many techniques have been developed to find the vulnerabilities at development time. Of particular interest are static analysis techniques that can consider all possible executions of a system. But, static analysis can suffer from a large number of false positives.
A recently developed approach, Scoria, is a semi-automated static analysis that requires security architects to annotate the code, typecheck the annotations, extract a hierarchical object graph and write constraints in order to find security vulnerabilities in a system.
This thesis evaluates Scoria on three systems (sizes …

Robust bicycle and pedestrian data on a national scale would help promote effective planning and engineering of walking and bicycling facilities, build the evidence-based case for funding such projects, and dispel notions that walking and cycling are not occurring. To organize and promote the collection of nonmotorized traffic data, a team of transportation professionals and computer scientists is creating a national bicycle and pedestrian count archive. This archive will enable data sharing by centralizing continuous and short-duration traffic counts in a publicly available online archive. Although other archives exist, this will be the first archive that will be national in …

Computer Aided Detection Of Oral Lesions On Ct Images, Shaikat Mahmood Galib
Masters Theses
"Oral lesions are important findings on computed tomography images. They are difficult to detect on CT images because of low contrast, arbitrary orientation of objects, complicated topology and lack of clear lines indicating lesions. In this thesis, a fully automatic method to detect oral lesions from dental CT images is proposed to identify (1) Closed boundary lesions and (2) Bone deformation lesions. Two algorithms were developed to recognize these two types of lesions, which cover most of the lesion types that can be found on CT images. The results were validated using a dataset of 52 patients. Using non training …

Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory: Applications And Extensions, Clayton Parker Smith
Masters Theses
"Adaptive Resonance Theory, ART, is a powerful clustering tool for learning arbitrary patterns in a self-organizing manner. In this research, two papers are presented that examine the extensibility and applications of ART. The first paper examines a means to boost ART performance by assigning each cluster a vigilance value, instead of a single value for the whole ART module. A Particle Swarm Optimization technique is used to search for desirable vigilance values. In the second paper, it is shown how ART, and clustering in general, can be a useful tool in preprocessing time series data. Clustering quantization attempts to meaningfully …

A Novel Entropy Production Based Full-Chip Tsv Fatigue Analysis, Tianchen Wang
Masters Theses
"Through-silicon vias (TSVs) are subject to thermal fatigue due to stress over time, no matter how small the stress is. Existing works on TSV fatigue all rely on measurement-based parameters to estimate the lifetime, and cannot consider detailed thermal profiles. In this paper, we propose a new method for TSV fatigue prediction using entropy production during thermal cycles. By combining thermodynamics and mechanics laws, the fatigue process can be quantitatively evaluated with detailed thermal profiles. Experimental results show that interestingly, the landing pad possesses the most easy-to-fail region, which generates up to 50% more entropy compared with the TSV body. …

Hybrid Single And Dual Pattern Structured Light Illumination, Minghao Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Structured Light Illumination is a widely used 3D shape measurement technique in non-contact surface scanning. Multi-pattern based Structured Light Illumination methods reconstruct 3-D surface with high accuracy, but are sensitive to object motion during the pattern projection and the speed of scanning process is relatively long. To reduce this sensitivity, single pattern techniques are developed to achieve a high speed scanning process, such as Composite Pattern (CP) and Modified Composite Pattern (MCP) technique. However, most of single patter techniques have a significant banding artifact and sacrifice the accuracy. We focus on developing SLI techniques can achieve both high speed, high …
