In most video games today that focus on a single story, scripting languages are used for controlling the artificial intelligence of the virtual actors. While scripting is a great tool for reliably performing a story, it has many disadvantages; mainly, it is limited by only being able to respond to those situations that were explicitly declared, causing unreliable responses to unknown situations, and the believability of the virtual actor is hindered by possible conflicts between scripted actions and appropriate responses as perceived by the viewer. Performance of Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum Under Worst-Case Jamming Casey Deyle, M.S University of Nebraska 2009 Advisor: Lim Nguyen Spread Spectrum Communications uses m-sequences (sometimes referred to as Pseudo Noise or PN sequences) modulated with a data signal to create a transmission signal that takes up more bandwidth than the original information signal. Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum (SESS) uses spreading codes generated by the transmitted signal, eliminating the need to synchronize m-sequences between the transmitter and receiver, thus making the channel more secure. The speed gap between processors and DRAM remains a crit-ical performance bottleneck for contemporary computer systems, which necessitates an effective management of last level caches (LLC) to minimize expensive off-chip accesses. However, because all sets in a conventional set-associative cache design are statically assigned an equal number of blocks, the LLC capacity utilization can drastically diminish when the cache actually exhibits non-uniform capacity demands across the sets. There are many benefits of checking design constraints at runtime---for example, automatic detection of design drift or corrosion. However, there is no comparative analysis of different approaches although such an analysis could provide a sound basis for determining the appropriateness of one approach over the others. In this paper we conduct a comparative analysis and evaluation of different constraint checking approaches possible for the Object Constraint Language (OCL). We compare several approaches including (1) direct translation to implementation languages, (2) use of executable assertion languages, and (3) use of aspect-oriented programming languages. Physical vapor deposited nickel catalyst layers of 10, 50, 100, 200, 350, and 500 angstroms were granulated using hydrogen plasma for varying times to determine an effective carbon nanotube (CNT) growth process using microwave plasma enhanced CVD (MPECVD). Nickel was deposited via sputtering or evaporation. The catalyst granule size, density, and resulting CNTs were analyzed. Sputtered nickel of 50 angstroms with 5 minutes of hydrogen plasma pretreatment resulted in the most effective CNT growth.

This paper presents an advanced method to acoustically assess animal abundance. The framework combines supervised classification (song-type and individual identity recognition), unsupervised classification (individual identity clustering), and the mark-recapture model of abundance estimation. The underlying algorithm is based on clustering using hidden Markovmodels (HMMs) and Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) similar to methods used in the speech recognition community for tasks such as speaker identification and clustering. Initial experiments using a Norwegian ortolan bunting (Emberiza hortulana) data set show the feasibility and effectiveness of the approach. Soft errors induced by energetic particle strikes in on-chip memory structures, such as L1 data/instruction caches and register files, have become an increasing challenge in designing new generation reliable microprocessors. Due to their transient/random nature, soft errors cannot be captured by traditional verification and testing process due to the irrelevancy to the correctness of the logic. This dissertation is thus focusing on the reliability characterization and cost-effective reliable design of on-chip memories against soft errors.

A team of robots cooperating to quickly produce a map needs to share landmark information between team members so that the local maps can be accurately merged. However, a landmark visible to one robot may be partially occluded to another! Terrain Spatiograms are a landmark representation in which the image spatial information relates to the scene rather than the image. This makes it possible to identify and filter potential landmark occlusions. Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) with many-core architectures have emerged as general-purpose parallel computing platforms that can accelerate simulation science applications tremendously. While multi-GPU workstations with several TeraFLOPS of peak computing power are available to accelerate computational problems, larger problems require even more resources. Conventional clusters of central processing units (CPU) are now being augmented with multiple GPUs in each compute-node to tackle large problems. The heterogeneous architecture of a multi-GPU cluster with a deep memory hierarchy creates unique challenges in developing scalable and efficient simulation codes.
