Mentoring: A Grounded Theory Study Examining How The Relationship Between The Mentor And Mentee Becomes Mutually Beneficial, David Martin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This grounded theory qualitative study examined the mentee/mentor relationship between five first year teachers and their five assigned mentors in a school district in Central Florida. To generate a model that seeks to explain how and why a mentee/mentor relationship changes and evolves from that of a single directional stream of information to that of a bidirectional stream which benefits the professional development of both parties, the grounded theory approach was utilized. Three forms of data were collected: interviews, focus groups, and participant journaling. This data along with artifacts and documents describing the school setting and the use of mentors …

Factors That Contribute To Burnout Among Elementary School Counselors, Yesenia Lopez

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examined the relationship between elementary school counselors' self-efficacy, counselor-to-student ratio, and employment in a Title I school and burnout on the dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. This study also investigated which factor(s) (i.e., self-efficacy, counselor-to-student ratio, or employment in a Title I school) predicts burnout on the dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment among elementary school counselors. Data collected from 84 elementary school counselors were used to test four hypotheses. A significant positive relation was found between elementary school counselors' self-efficacy and personal accomplishment. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were not related to elementary …

Enriching The Professional Learning Of Early Years Teachers In Disadvantaged Contexts: The Impact Of Quality Resources And Quality Professional Learning, Elizabeth A. Warren, Jodie Miller

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Studies indicate that very few teachers entering disadvantaged contexts feel prepared academically or professionally to teach effectively. This study focuses on the impact of a model for professional learning, the RoleM Professional Learning model (RPL), situated in a disadvantaged context over a three-year period. The participating teachers (n = 12) in this study taught in the first three years of school (Foundation to Year 2). To ascertain the effectiveness of RPL, teachers were interviewed three times a year and students’ pre and post-test scores were also considered. The results indicate that quality teaching is related to the establishment of quality …

An Investigation Of The Perceptions Of Induction Support Of First Year Alternatively Certificated Teachers, Tonya E. Steele 2013 Kennesaw State University

An Investigation Of The Perceptions Of Induction Support Of First Year Alternatively Certificated Teachers, Tonya E. Steele

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

In response to address teacher shortages, urban schools have begun the practice of hiring alternatively certified teachers to staff classrooms with highly qualified teachers. Alternative certification refers to certification obtained through programs without completing a traditional four- or five-year university-based program. Several studies revealed that alternatively certified teachers normally do not receive in-depth training before beginning sole teaching responsibilities. Therefore, site-based support is essential for first year alternatively certified first year teachers’ development and retention. Research also indicated principals who provide one-on-one support as well as various support strategies could affect first year teachers’ self-efficacy as well as increase morale. …

The First Year: Development Of Preservice Teacher Beliefs About Teaching And Learning During Year One Of An Ma Tesol Program, Emily Spady Addiego

Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative, longitudinal study followed four first-year MA TESOL students through their initial year in a teacher training program with the goal of determining whether their overall beliefs about teaching and learning changed over time as a result of program curriculum and other outside factors. An analysis of semi-structured interviews with each participant, conducted one to two times per quarter, revealed that participants' beliefs appeared to evolve as a result of coursework and teaching practice. Participants' identities as teachers also showed signs of evolution and development. The participants attributed the majority of their development to hands-on teaching practice, though there …

“My Classroom Is A Bigger Place”: Examining The Impact Of A Professional Development Course On The Global Perspective Of Experienced Teachers, Steve Sider, Mary Ashun

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

How do experienced teachers develop a global perspective through a professional development course and how can this perspective impact classroom practice? These are the two key questions which this paper examines. We utilize Guskey’s (2002) model of teacher change as a framework for understanding the results of a study involving experienced teachers who took a professional development course which had a focus on global education. The participants engaged in a number of activities four months after the completion of the course to explore how the course had impacted their classroom teaching practice. Common themes were identified through participant reflective papers …

Integrated Theater Arts And Strategies (Itas) Program And Its Impact On Teachers’ Integration Of Theater Arts Strategies In Targeted Literacy Skills, Cayce J. Cummins

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Visual and performing arts can be taught in isolation or integrated with other core content subjects such as literacy, math, science, and social studies. Jersey City Public Schools (JCPS) implemented the Integrated Theater and Arts Strategies (ITAS) program beginning in the 2008-2009 school year and lasting through the 2010-2011 school year with eight targeted schools. Visual and performing arts standards exist in both the state’s core curriculum standards and national standards. Despite these existing standards, implementation is minimal in JCPS. JCPS plans to develop and implement the ITAS program for targeted schools with sixth and seventh grade students. Language Arts …

Peer Mentor Development: Examining The Differences And Patterns Between More And Less Experienced Peer Mentors, Mindy Davis, Dr. Stefinee Pinnegar

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Research has shown that student-to-student interaction in times of transition is valuable (Kuh, 2005; Light, 2001; Astin, 1993). Kuh (2005) has highlighted the interaction between freshmen and upper-classmen as a high impact strategy in supporting freshmen transition. Yet, research indicates that the benefits received by either the freshmen or the upper-classmen is dependent on the quality of interaction. Since the upper-classmen, usually labeled as peer mentors, have the most responsibility for that interaction, their ability to negotiate these relationships becomes increasingly important to programs that use them. Thus, hiring peer mentors and training them is a crucial concern. Currently criteria …

A Typology Of Actional-Operational Modes In Earth Science And Implications For Science Literacy Instruction, Amy Wilson-Lopez

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Framed in theories of social semiotics, this multiple case study describes and categorizes the actional-operational modes used by three middle school earth science teachers throughout the course of one school year. Data included field notes, photographs, and video-recordings of classroom instruction, as well as periodic interviews with the teachers. A constant comparative analysis of the data resulted in the creation of a typology of actional-operational modes according to how they fulfilled the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of communication. Six categories of actional-operational modes were identified: gesture, embodied representation, moving objects on flat surfaces, moving objects through three-dimensional space, material representations, …
