Historical Thinking: Perspectives On Teaching History In The Secondary Education Classroom, Michael Diclemente
Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston
“Doing” history can be interpreted in many different ways and this is due to the dynamic nature of history as a discipline. Doing history can be research, writing papers, working on a manuscript, putting final touches on a thesis, setting up a museum exhibit, being a tour guide, or teaching. In all these examples historians try to take their passion for the subject and make that clear to others. History needs an audience. Interest in history exists, if not, we would not have outlets like the History Channel. Dealing with an audience who wants to learn about history is one …

Quality Media Literacy Education. A Tool For Teachers And Teacher Educators Of Italian Elementary Schools, Damiano Felini Ed.D.
Journal of Media Literacy Education
The dissemination of good practices in MLE requires a more rigorous definition of their characteristics, including criteria and indicators to measure their quality. This article – after reflecting on the meaning and function of identifying good MLE practices – presents a systematic framework of 35 indicators for good MLE activities in Italian elementary schools. These indicators are grouped according to five general criteria of quality: adequacy of the teaching methods; competence and involvement of the actors; structuring and coherence of the activity's organization; awareness of the underlying MLE theories as well as their appropriateness; and originality of the project. The …

Documenting Elementary Teachers' Sustainability Of Instructional Practices: A Mixed Method Case Study, Bridget Cotner
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
School reform programs focus on making educational changes; however, research on interventions past the funded implementation phase to determine what was sustained is rarely done (Beery, Senter, Cheadle, Greenwald, Pearson, et al., 2005). This study adds to the research on sustainability by determining what instructional practices, if any, of the Teaching SMART[reg] professional development program that was implemented from 2005-2008 in elementary schools with teachers in grades third through eighth were continued, discontinued, or adapted five years post-implementation (in 2013). Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: What do teachers who participated in Teaching SMART[reg] and district administrators …

Collaborative Literacy Work In A High School: Enhancing Teacher Capacity For English Learner Instruction In The Mainstream, Felice Atesoglu Russell
Faculty Articles
As more English learners (ELs) are included in mainstream content classrooms at the secondary level, the need to understand how teachers collaborate to meet the particular instructional needs of ELs is essential. This paper presents findings from a qualitative case study that investigated the collaborative work that engaged a group of literacy teachers over the course of a school year in one culturally and linguistically diverse high school. The ongoing collaboration of the mainstream language arts teachers and English-as-a-second-language (ESL) teachers is examined, including the role of an EL facilitator/ESL teacher in supporting teacher professional learning and inclusion. The contributions …

Relationship Mapping For Theme Based Communities In Freshman Academy, Patrick P. Frost, Dr. Stefinee Pinnegar
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In an effort to help incoming freshman make a successful transition to university life, BYU created Freshman Academy. Freshman Academy is a one semester program in which students register for an envelope of core classes. The same group of students attends all of the classes within the envelope. These groups of students are called learning communities. For each learning community, Freshman Academy provides a peer mentor that works with the students. A peer mentor is an upper classman that has shown academic success, has taken many of the classes that are in the community, and is familiar with campus resources. …

Comparing Technology-Supported Teacher Education Curricular Models For Enhancing Statistical Content Knowledge, Dionne Cross Francis, Rick Hudson, Crystal Vesperman, Arnulfo Perez
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Recent calls have been made to enhance and extend the statistical experiences of K-12 students. However, to ensure that such goals are met, teachers also need to develop deep conceptual understanding and pedagogical content knowledge that are essential to statistical thinking and reasoning. In this regard, over the past two decades, leading thinkers and professional organizations had advocated that teaching and curricula should be focused and organized around problem solving. In this paper we describe three such technology-supported curricula—a project-based learning (PjBL) unit, problem-solving activities (PS) unit, and a model-eliciting activities (MEA) unit—that align with this perspective and discuss the …

Effects Of Teacher-To-Student Relatedness On Adolescent Male Motivation In Weight-Training Classes, Zack E. Beddoes
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if the motivational profiles of male junior high weight-training students (n = 166) differ across levels of teacher and peer relatedness (high, low). The students' contextual motivation was measured using the Sport Motivation Scale II -Physical Education (SMS II-PE) pre- and post-intervention (high vs. low teacher-to-student relatedness). Situational motivation and relatedness measurements were assessed pre- and post-intervention using the Situational Motivation Scale-Physical Education (SIMS-PE), Amotivation Inventory-Physical Education Scale (AI-PE), and the Interpersonal Behavior Scale (IBS). Results revealed that situational motivation was not affected by the intervention in either group. Significant differences were …

Predictors Of Success On The Prosthetics Certification Examination, Rebecca M. Miro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Students who graduate from a practitioner program in prosthetics & orthotics must achieve certification in order to obtain licensure and practice independently in 16 states. In states where licensure is not mandatory, graduates may choose to pursue certification in order assure patients that they are practicing at the highest level as well as to differentiate themselves from competitors. While studies have been carried out extensively regarding predictors of success on the certification exams in other professions, no such study has been carried out to date in prosthetics.
The American Board for Certification in Prosthetics, Orthotics, & Pedorthics (ABC), established in …

Digital Natives-Digital Immigrants Engaging The Google Generation, Michael Ross
Forum Lectures
Our students are the "Digital Natives" in that they have grown up using the technology we as "Digital Immigrants" have considered tools. Tools which make us better teachers, learners and researchers. On the other hand our students do not think of the technology as tools but as an extension of their lives, using these technologies for personal interactions, group exploration and of course a source of content which we consider knowledge. In this digital immigrant presentation I try to highlight where our students are and suggest things we must do to help their learning.

An Instructional Model To Support Problem-Based Historical Inquiry: The Persistent Issues In History Network, Thomas Brush, John Saye
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
For over a decade, we have collaborated with secondary school history teachers in an evolving line of inquiry that applies research-based propositions to the design and testing of a problem-based learning framework and a set of wise practices that represent a professional teaching knowledge base for implementing a particular model of instruction, problem-based historical inquiry (PBHI). PBHI centers history instruction on decision-making about persistent societal problems as they occur in particular historical periods. In order to prepare future teachers to be better able to implement this model in their classrooms, we have integrated components of this model throughout our secondary …

Teaching And Learning For Intercultural Sensitivity: A Cross-Cultural Examination Of American Domestic Students And Japanese Exchange Students, Yoko Hwang Sakurauchi
Dissertations and Theses
Global student mobility has become a dynamic force in American higher education. Integrating international students into diverse campus environments provides domestic as well as foreign students with enriched learning opportunities. However, a diverse campus climate itself will not make college students interculturally competent. Intentional curricular design is critical for overcoming issues such as resistance and reinforcement of stereotypes, but the research literature is extremely limited on effective pedagogical strategies for cultivating college students' intercultural sensitivity.
This paper explicates a research study to investigate college students' development of intercultural sensitivity through an intentional course design utilizing Kolb's (1984) learning styles cycle …
