Epistemology Shock: English Professors Confront Science, Ian Barnard, Jan Osborn 2017 Chapman University

Epistemology Shock: English Professors Confront Science, Ian Barnard, Jan Osborn

English Faculty Articles and Research

This article raises questions and concerns regarding students from the sciences working with faculty in the humanities in interdisciplinary settings. It explores the experience of two English professors facing the privileging of "facts" and a science-based understanding of the world in their own classrooms. It poses both questions and pedagogical possibilities for addressing conflicts around epistemologies, scholarship, and teaching and learning.

Considering Teachers’ Classroom Literacy: Toward Uniting The Knowledge Base For Teaching And For Learning, Christi Michigan Edge 2017 Northern Michigan University

Considering Teachers’ Classroom Literacy: Toward Uniting The Knowledge Base For Teaching And For Learning, Christi Michigan Edge

Grants

Drawing from both teacher education and reading/literacy education—distinct bodies of knowledge—I have investigated a problem situated in the unexplored space between (Edge, 2011). A Classroom Literacy framework (Edge, 2011; Edge, 2014; Edge, 2015) re-conceptualizes persistent problems in learning to teach in light of research on literacy, in order to (a) understand how teachers make meaning from classroom events and to (b) articulate how teachers’ literacy practices can purposefully guide K-12 learners to actively build knowledge and understanding. This project addresses how the knowledge base of reading instruction might provide a unifying framework for how teachers learn to “read” and “compose” …

Universal Design For Belonging: Living And Working With Diverse Personal Names, Karen E. Pennesi 2017 University of Western Ontario

Universal Design For Belonging: Living And Working With Diverse Personal Names, Karen E. Pennesi

Anthropology Publications

There is great diversity in the names and naming practices of Canada’s population due to the multiple languages and cultures from which names and name-givers originate. While this diversity means that everyone encounters unfamiliar names, institutional agents who work with the public are continually challenged when attempting to determine a name’s correct pronunciation, spelling, structure and gender. Drawing from over a hundred interviews in London (Ontario) and Montréal (Québec), as well as other published accounts, I outline strategies used by institutional agents to manage name diversity within the constraints of their work tasks. I explain how concern with saving face …

Lessons On Citizenship And Democratic Power Literacy From Undocumented Youth, Hillary Parkhouse 2017 Virginia Commonwealth University

Lessons On Citizenship And Democratic Power Literacy From Undocumented Youth, Hillary Parkhouse

Teaching and Learning Publications

To create a society in which power is more equally accessible, we must teach our youth not only about civics and government, but also how to use political tools in order to effect social change. In this essay, I argue for teaching power literacy in place of traditional citizenship education on the grounds that the former has greater potential for increasing students’ political efficacy and their abilities to apply knowledge of civics to the real-world issues that affect them. To illustrate the concept of power literacy, I draw on a case study of a grassroots, undocumented youth activist organization fighting …

Benefits Of Participating In Service-Learning, Business-Related Classes: Assessing The Impact On The Community Partners, Nancy Vizenor, Tasha J. Souza, Joshua Jordan Ertmer

CTL Teaching Gallery

Problem: Many universities offer service-learning classes that provide opportunities for students and community partners to work together on semester-long projects. Researchers have been especially interested in the benefits students receive in service-learning classes, and those benefits have been well recognized (Eyler, Giles, Stenson, & Gray, 2001). However, the benefits to community partners have been assumed but seldom explored empirically (Bringle & Steinberg, 2010; Cruz & Giles, 2000; Dorado & Giles, 2004). Research Questions: How beneficial were the service-learning projects to the community partners? What were the community partners’ experiences working with the students? Research Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was …

After The Crash: Examining Pedagogical Approaches To Teaching Business Ethics, Colette Murphy, Dr. Noel Murray 2017 Munster Technological University

After The Crash: Examining Pedagogical Approaches To Teaching Business Ethics, Colette Murphy, Dr. Noel Murray

Irish Business Journal

Research has shown that business students are less ethical than students in other disciplines (Segal et al., 2011), which is a worrying finding, considering that unethical business practices are seen as a major feature leading to the world economic recession in 2008. However, business schools across the globe have consistently taught the subject of ethics in order to instil an ethical mind-set in their graduates. The way business ethics is embedded in the curriculum has been the subject of much debate, with a range of pedagogical approaches taken. This paper examines the current teaching of ethics, by examining two business …

International Students Career Development: Acculturative Stress And Career Outcomes, Sneha J. Pitre

ETD Archive

International students face many challenges as they adapt to a new host country. These challenges are present in social, psychological, academic, and career domains of life. Although students aim to reduce the difficulties encountered in the acculturation process, negative experiences often have a harmful impact. Acculturative stress can negatively affect mental and physical health, as well as career outcomes. The literature focusing on the career-related needs and placement concerns of international students with relation to acculturative stress is scare and needs further exploration. The present study investigated the relationship between acculturative stress and the career outcomes of work hope, career …

Interdependence: Being Reformed By Students With Disabilities, Melinda Eichhorn 2017 Gordon College

Interdependence: Being Reformed By Students With Disabilities, Melinda Eichhorn

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Throughout my career in special education, I have reconsidered my beliefs about disability. As I have transitioned from a special educator to a teacher trainer in India to an assistant professor in a Christian college, I have looked beyond limitations and deficits of my students to see individual uniqueness. In this article, I share my lived experience of people with severe special needs ministering to me in India, explore the lived experiences of other disability advocates, and describe the implications this has for my teaching at a Christian college.

Towards A More User Friendly Technique For Predicting Photovoltaic Energy Output, Hans Chapman 2017 Morehead State University

Towards A More User Friendly Technique For Predicting Photovoltaic Energy Output, Hans Chapman

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Several factors impact the power output from solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. Some are deterministic and controllable and others are uncontrollable (e.g., meteorological conditions), yet critical to performance. The objective of this paper is to assess the relationship between the meteorological variables and the power output of a mono silicon PV module using Multiple Linear Regression modelling. The approach involved exposing one mono-silicon photovoltaic module to the open atmosphere for a period of time and measuring the electrical energy output as a function of natural variation in the meteorological factors. A regression model for the power output was developed and significant …

Battered Not Broken, Daryl R. Privott 2017 Morehead State University

Battered Not Broken, Daryl R. Privott

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Reflecting on the 2016 voting season, we are challenged to think anew concerning the connection between the theory and practice of social justice and adult education. I suggest that we should mirror the mission of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE), and its call to “provide leadership for the field of adult and continuing education” (AAACE, 2017). It is my belief that as adult educators, we have not provided leadership for the field in addressing social justice issues because we have been battered and are fearful to address civic(s) topics. Battered is defined as “injured by repeated …

Efl Teachers’ Perceptions And Practices About Assessment At The Universidad Central Del Ecuador, Evelyn Veronica Almeida Garcia 2017 University of New Mexico

Efl Teachers’ Perceptions And Practices About Assessment At The Universidad Central Del Ecuador, Evelyn Veronica Almeida Garcia

Research and Development Supported by El Centro

Despite rising interest in understanding how language mastery is assessed, our knowledge of language assessment, alternatives in assessment, feedback, peer and self-assessment, as well as our understanding of teachers’ perceptions of assessment and their subsequent assessment practices is still quite limited. In my experience, language assessment is not always aligned with what and how students learn in their EFL classes. My aim is to conduct a case study of three EFL teachers from the Centro de Idiomas (Language Center) in the UCE and examining how their knowledge and beliefs about assessment influence their practices in class. I will collect data …

“Your Writing, Not My Writing”: Discourse Analysis Of Student Talk About Writing, Patrick D. Hales

School of Education, Counseling and Human Development

Student voice is a difficult concept to capture in research. This study attempts to provide a vehicle for understanding student perceptions about writing and writing instruction through a case study supported by discourse analysis of student talk. The high school students in this study participated in interviews and focus groups about their experiences with writing. The findings reveal deep seeded notions about writing enculturated through their schooling. Students were not likely to take ownership of their writing, rather considering it a teacher construct, and could not typically describe the application of writing skills. Students were optimistic and provided multiple suggestions …

Egalitarian Teams In Action: Organizing For Library Initiatives, Linda Miles, Miriam Laskin, Kate Lyons

Urban Library Journal

In 2006 Peter Senge, who coined the term the learning organization, wrote, “As the world becomes more interconnected and business becomes more complex and dynamic, work must become more ‘learningful’... It’s just not possible any longer to to figure it out from the top, and have everyone else following the orders of the ‘grand strategist’” (p. 4). Senge documented the need for professions and organizations that can change, that can quickly adapt, be nimble, learn, and find new opportunities in the changing information landscape. Libraries are not immune from this kind of pressure. In this case study, first presented at …
