Transitioning Secondary Mathematics Pedagogy Towards Reform-Oriented Practice Through Coteaching, Jessica Tybursky Nuzzi 2021 Montclair State University

Transitioning Secondary Mathematics Pedagogy Towards Reform-Oriented Practice Through Coteaching, Jessica Tybursky Nuzzi

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Reform standards in mathematics education have called for classrooms that are student-centered and that incorporate problem solving and reasoning for meaningful learning. After decades of reform efforts involving multiple stakeholders, research indicates that most classrooms remain teacher-centered and procedurally focused, due to the complexity of concerns and competing intentions that teachers face in their work. Coteaching, a commitment between two teachers to coplan, coenact, and coreflect on lessons, can serve as an ongoing, sustained, focused, integrated, reflective professional development structure that supports teachers towards growth. The theoretical constructs used to describe possible growth towards reform orientations in teaching secondary mathematics …

Student Teachers' Tpack Development And Technology Integration In The Shared Collective Lesson Planning, Chen Guo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Collaborative lesson planning is an effective teacher training approach for improving teaching skills. One critical challenge is how to ensure effective collaboration and interaction among teachers. This study attempts to address this issue by proposing a pre-service teacher professional development model, Shared Collective Lesson Planning (SCLP). To illustrate how this model can be implemented, 24 student teachers were invited to participate in the SCLP activities. Their behaviors and strategies performed were presented and highlighted. Additionally, pre-service teachers are required to be competent in technological knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and content knowledge (TPACK) for successful pedagogical technology integration. Therefore, this study also …

When The Church Comes To Campus: Christian Convictions And The Challenge Toward Authentic Membership In The Secular Academy, Henrique G. Alvim 2021 Walsh University

When The Church Comes To Campus: Christian Convictions And The Challenge Toward Authentic Membership In The Secular Academy, Henrique G. Alvim

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This article argues for a certain kind of pluralism in the context of the secular university that would afford Christians the opportunity to more intentionally bring their religious convictions and resources to their lived experiences and academic pursuits. It points to possibilities in what pertains to the place of believers while also reminding the Church of what it ought to be in these shared educational spaces: a community of worship, not of domination. As both the university and the Church rethink ways in which to respectfully engage with one another, thus taking faith commitments more seriously, collaboration among all members …

The Experiences Of Lgbtq+ Christians In A Support Group And Implications For Practitioners, Christian Heasley, Stacy A. Jacob

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

LGBTQ+ students attending Christian colleges and universities represent a unique intersection of sexual and spiritual identity. There is a dearth of literature regarding LGBTQ+ students at Christian institutions. Research is difficult to undertake because of the challenge of recruiting participants who may not feel comfortable or even safe identifying as LGBTQ+, even in an anonymous study. This qualitative study specifically studies LGBTQ+ students who are members of a school-sanctioned LGBTQ+ support groups at a Council for Christian College and Universities (CCCU) institution. Participants involved in such a group responded to an interview discussing their faith development, their sexual identity development, …

Authoring An Undivided Self: Predictors Of Self-Authorship Among First-Year Students Attending Christian Universities, Rachel Abouras 2021 Baylor University

Authoring An Undivided Self: Predictors Of Self-Authorship Among First-Year Students Attending Christian Universities, Rachel Abouras

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Ample research suggests that self-authorship may serve an important role in helping students develop as whole people. Therefore, the time is ripe for Christian student affairs professionals to further investigate the construct of self-authorship, specifically how it may be shaped in the college context. To that end, the purpose of this study was to identify key factors that influence self-authorship among a sample of first-year students attending a Christian university (N=428). Drawing on the work of Kegan (1994) and Baxter Magolda (2001), this study utilized hierarchical multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between self-authorship and a set of predictor …

Teachers Connecting With Rural Students And Places: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Angie Starrett, Jan A. Yow Ph.D., Christine Lotter Ph.D., Matthew J. Irvin Ph.D., Paula Adams

Faculty Publications

Our study explores how teachers’ living proximity to their school and level of social connection to their rural community may influence implementation of place-based education and student-teacher relationships in mathematics and science classrooms. Both quantitative and qualitative results from 4126 students and 19 teachers reveal homegrown teachers (live in community where they grew up) highly value and excel at student-teacher relationships. Conversely, less socially connected commuters excel at implementing place-based education. Implications of our study provide new directions for recruiting rural teachers, aside from focusing on those from within the rural community.

Efl Literacy Teaching In Relation To Teachers’ Self-Efficacy, Experience And Native Language, Stephanie Fuchs, Tami Katzir, Janina Kahn-Horwitz 2021 Gordon College of Education, Israel

Efl Literacy Teaching In Relation To Teachers’ Self-Efficacy, Experience And Native Language, Stephanie Fuchs, Tami Katzir, Janina Kahn-Horwitz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

English as a foreign language (EFL) literacy is necessary for the career success of non-English speaking students. Many students lack adequate EFL literacy skills which may indicate a gap between EFL literacy instruction theory and practice. Teachers’ self-efficacy regarding their ability to teach reading and writing, years of teaching experience, and/or native language may influence their selection of components for EFL literacy instruction. This study examines these components as they are perceived by teachers. One hundred and sixty-seven Israeli EFL elementary school teachers completed online questionnaires. Findings showed a weak correlation between teachers’ self-efficacy and their instructional approach. Teaching experience …

The Pressing Need To Raise The Status Of The Teaching Profession: The Launch Story Of The Teachers Of Australia Social Media Campaign, Alison Willis, Catherine Thiele, Rachael Dwyer, Peter Grainger, Susan Simon

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper presents the start-up methodology for a project that leverages the opportunities that social media affords to give teachers voice and agency. In response to negative press about teachers in mainstream media, coupled with research that shows that teachers are working hard to meet student academic and wellbeing needs, the researchers employed the assertive technologies of social media and started a campaign to promote the work of pre-service and in-service teachers. The paper presents the theorising behind the start-up methodology for the social media campaign and outlines a response to an identified opportunity. It argues that social media provides …

Conceptual Knowledge Or Procedural Knowledge Or Conceptual Knowledge And Procedural Knowledge:Why The Conjunction Is Important For Teachers, Derek P. Hurrell

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

: The terms conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge are often used by teachers and never more so than when discussing how teachers teach, and children learn mathematics. This paper will look at literature regarding conceptual and procedural knowledge and their place in the classroom, to offer teachers and teacher educators’ advice on some of the more pressing issues and understandings around them. A thorough synthesis of extant and seminal literature will provide advice to teachers and teacher educators on how a deeper insight into conceptual and procedural knowledge could improve the quality of mathematics teaching.

Pre-Service Teacher Reflection And Feedback Using An Online Video Platform During Professional Experience, Michael Cavanagh 2021 Macquarie University

Pre-Service Teacher Reflection And Feedback Using An Online Video Platform During Professional Experience, Michael Cavanagh

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper presents the results of a pilot study in which 11 triads comprising a pre-service teacher, a supervising teacher and a university supervisor used a video platform for pre-service teacher self-reflection and for the provision of feedback. Pre-service teachers made video recordings of one lesson each week during a four-week professional experience placement. They annotated the videos using time-stamped comments and shared them with their supervisors who added comments to provide feedback. The annotations were investigated through questionnaires and interviews that were analysed for their depth of reflection and participants’ views about the video reflection process. Results indicate that …

The Policy-Driven Dimensions Of Teacher Beliefs About Assessment, Dennis Alonzo, Velma Labad, Jean Bejano, Florence Guerra 2021 University of New South Wales

The Policy-Driven Dimensions Of Teacher Beliefs About Assessment, Dennis Alonzo, Velma Labad, Jean Bejano, Florence Guerra

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Despite the advancement of the conceptualisations of teacher assessment literacy, teachers’ assessment practices remain relatively low due to misalignment between teachers’ beliefs on assessment and principles of effective assessment practices. The current assessment reform in the Philippines has not gained significant traction despite the ongoing professional development programs focused on enhancing teacher assessment literacy. We argue that to change teachers’ exam-dominated assessment practices towards a more student-centred approach, there is a need to explore teachers’ beliefs in assessment. Hence, we developed a context-driven tool using both theoretical and empirical approaches that could measure this construct, and which the results could …
