Developing An Understanding Of What Constitutes Mathematics Teacher Educator Pck: A Case Study Of A Collaboration Between Two Teacher Educators, Tracey Muir, Jill Wells, Helen Chick
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Previous research into the knowledge required for teaching has focused primarily on pre-service and in-service teachers’ knowledge. What is less researched, however, is the role of the teacher educator in helping pre-service teachers (PSTs) develop the knowledge needed in order to teach mathematics to students. The focus thus shifts from examining school teachers’ knowledge for teaching mathematics to school students, to studying teacher educators’ knowledge for teaching teachers. This raises the question of what is the nature of this knowledge as required by teacher educators, and how evident is it in their practice? This paper documents the interactions among two …

Exploring Effective Professional Development Strategies For In-Service Teachers On Guiding Beginning Readers To Become More Metacognitive In Their Oral Reading, Sharon M. Pratt, Anita M. Martin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This case study explored professional development centered on explicit teaching strategies with in-service first-grade teachers as they engaged beginning readers to consider stronger self-awareness of their thinking processes as they read. In this paper, we report on how teacher beliefs shifted regarding the impact of explicit versus implicit instructional practices that increased their students’ metacognitive awareness and regulation. Teachers adopted specific instructional strategies over the course of the professional development that positively impacted their students’ achievement, including one teacher’s use of peer coaching. As teachers observed their students doing more than they thought they were capable of, their beliefs about …

Impact Of Purposeful Professional Learning On Instructional Technology Integration In Daily Classroom Practices, Julie Chance
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Innovative Teacher Technology Project (ITTP) was designed and created to address the common misconception that teachers should be able to pull technology, both hardware and software, out of the box and begin appropriate integration with teaching and learning. ITTP was developed within a school system that continues to deal with the aftereffects of a nationwide recession and ongoing funding cuts from local, state and federal sources. While ITTP appeared to be working well, it had yet to be determined if the purposeful professional learning that occurred had an impact on the integration of instructional technology in daily classroom practices. …

Mathematics Teachers' Beliefs And Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching: How Teachers' Mkt Shifts In Planning And Impacts Their Beliefs And Instructional Practice, Paul Conley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to understand how a teacher developed Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching and how that knowledge can shift teacher's beliefs and instructional practice, I worked with a teacher to deeply plan and implement six mathematical lessons.
The research suggests that planning can be a vehicle to develop a teacher's Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching. In addition, as a teacher's Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching started to develop through lesson planning, the teacher's beliefs about her own knowledge of mathematics started to increase which started to shift the teacher's instructional practice.
This combination of a stronger Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching, self confidence …
