Comparing Massed And Distributed Course Formats: Effects On Outcomes In A Graduate Augmentative And Alternative Communication Course, Brandon Scott Eddy, Alli Sauerwein, Leah Meloy, Eric Sanders
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The effects of massed versus distributed learning have been well studied in the verbal and motor learning literature, with findings suggesting enhanced outcomes from distributing learning over time. However, some studies have found limited evidence to support enhanced outcomes from distributed learning when applied to an entire academic course. The effects of course scheduling on student learning in speech-language pathology graduate coursework have received limited attention. This study compared learning outcomes between a one-week massed format and an eight-week distributed format in an online two-credit augmentative and alternative communication graduate-level course. Learning outcomes were assessed before students enrolled, immediately after …

Goal 3: Interpersonal Intelligence Narrative
The purpose of this resource is to inform student leaders about the different ways information can be presented and the diverse ways individuals learn. It introduces the idea that people may think and process information differently, and that these differences do not prevent learning or engagement.
This resource is intended to support student leaders in developing more inclusive and effective presentation styles. By understanding multiple approaches to learning, student leaders can adapt how they share information to better reach a wider audience.
Additionally, this resource introduces a student development theory based on the work of Howard Gardner and his theory …

Continuous Professional Development: A Case Study Of Foreign English Language Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Development In Colleges In Asia, Chance W. Phillips
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
This qualitative case study investigated the experiences of college-level EFL/ESL teachers in Asia. The research sought to identify the gaps in professional development experiences influencing teachers to be better educators, meeting the needs of the English language learners in Asia. Additionally, the research identified how the professional development experiences, or lack thereof, of the college-level EFL/ESL teachers impacted their pedagogical strategies and professional practices. Despite the demand for English language education across Asia, foreign English educators often face limited institutional and administrative support, as well as unequal access to professional learning opportunities. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with foreign English language …

Do Our “Window And Mirror” Books Leave Shards Of Broken Glass?, Brianne R. Pitts, Jill Hermann-Wilmarth
Michigan Reading Journal
In this article the authors apply Bishop’s (1990) windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors as an analytical framework that, along with critical literacy practices, can be used to enhance the social studies and literacy instruction. The stories we share in elementary classrooms teach students about their future possibilities. As teacher educators, we wondered about our students and our complacency with powerful ideas from foundational scholars in literacy and education. Using Bishop’s (1990) metaphor as an analytic tool, students’ critical disciplinary literacy projects are assessed for future instructional goals, leaving readers with eight practical tools for classroom instruction and critical assessment …

Online, asynchronous professional development (PD) offers flexibility for learners, yet what is the most effective way to provide online PD? While current research suggests online platforms can be effective for learning, there is a lack of studies examining differences between fully autonomous, asynchronous modules and those that are asynchronous but still collaborative. This mixed-method study examined the learning differences and perceptions between two cohorts of special education teachers as they went through an eight-unit online course on dyslexia. One cohort received an autonomous platform without interaction among the students or instructor. The other cohort received the same content, but online …
