Gender And The Yale Faculty: A View Of The Data, Emily Stark, Nancy Ruther, Paula Kavathas, Claire Bowern
Yale Day of Data
Every five years, the Women Faculty Forum compiles the demographics of the University’s faculty in a report called “The View.” The findings of The View of 2016-2017 belong in the context of a series of structural changes at Yale over the past five years that contribute to a widespread effort to foster gender equity and to recruit, retain, and support a more diverse faculty.
The 2016-2017 report shows the gains made in university leadership (particularly administrative leadership and Heads of College) by women faculty since 2012 but a stagnation in numbers of URM (under-represented minorities) faculty and women with tenured …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
SCIPP redefines and expands the existing notions about what makes for a vibrant and robust community of practice by partnering CSUSB students and professors with K-12 students, parents, and educators, along with committed community partners. SCIPP encourages curiosity in ways that leads to critical thinking, exploration, "risk taking", confidence building, open-mindedness, and other personal traits that equip them with the softskills to be active, critical, and creative contributors to our communities. SCIPP pedagogy embraces our students' collective wisdom and focuses on relational building where multi-directional communication is promoted and students are viewed as equal stakeholders in their own educations. Teacher preparation programs at NLU are developing practice-centered approaches to teacher education that entail a core set of teaching practices and intentionally designed field-learning opportunities. One addition to prior practice with this approach is the inclusion of a video coaching context where candidates receive feedback from field supervisors on their teaching videos. This study investigated candidate and supervisor perceptions of the feedback in the video coaching context affords in addition to the traditional contexts of face to face field visits and competency appraisal surveys. The findings point to a unique self-regulatory benefit to the video coaching context. They also suggest …

As described in chapter 1, the POGIL pedagogy is an integrated combination of intentionally designed guided-inquiry activities and a focus on process skills involving the active engagement of student teams that are facilitated by an instructor. POGIL activities are structured according to the learning cycle (described in Chapter 1). The activities of a POGIL classroom frame the thinking that students will do during class. The students in constructing ideas and mastering material (Bodner, 1986; Driver, Asoko, Leach, Scott, & Mortimer, 1994). Because this approach is different from the kind of classroom that most teachers experienced as students, many do not …

Effectiveness Of Interactive Television: Perceptions Of Teacher Candidates, Delar K. Singh
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
At a rural, southeast university, this study examined the effectiveness of interactive television (ITV) as a method of instructional delivery for a teacher preparation course in special education. A total of 22 (N=22) teacher candidates who were enrolled in this class responded to a Likert type questionnaire that had 31 questions. The questionnaire was developed after a thorough review of literature on issues and topics surrounding interactive television instruction. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was calculated with Cronbach Alpha. The Cronbach Alpha for the questionnaire is α=.82. Analysis of data indicate that majority of the students prefer to take …

Polanyi, Broudy And Teacher Preparation, Timothy L. Simpson
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
To demonstrate the power and scope of Polanyi’s thought, this paper will establish the importance of Polanyi’s abundant insight for the accreditation of educator preparation programs in higher education. This inquiry will begin with a brief summary of the role and purpose of accreditation of educator preparation programs, highlighting the positivist presuppositions driving the current assessment process. With the aid of Harry Broudy, a close student of Polanyi, the essay will identify the implications of those presuppositions for educator preparation programs. Broudy’s analysis suggests that, despite claims to the contrary, the current assessment process fails to produce a professional teacher. …

Educational Rights Of College Students With Disabilities, Delar K. Singh
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
College education has become a prerequisite in today’s globalized, knowledge based, and technology controlled economy. A college education not only benefits the individual, it also has numerous advantages for society. Research shows that college graduates are less likely to be involved with crime, more likely to be home owners, more likely to be healthy, more likely to live longer, and more likely to be financially astute. They tend to be good citizens whose contributions to society are hard to enumerate. Unlike compulsory public school education in the USA, there are no laws that mandate attendance in a college. For high …

Influence Of Corn Hybrid, Kernel Traits, Location, And Dry-Rolling Or Steam-Flaking On Digestibility, Flint W. Harrelson
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Three trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of corn hybrid, kernel traits, growing location, and dry rolling or steam flaking on DM or starch digestibility or both. Trial 1 used 72 commercially available corn hybrids to evaluate the influence of hybrid on kernel characteristics and their effect on digestibility. Kernel characteristics evaluated were test weight, 1,000-kernel weight, and kernel hardness using the Stenvert hardness test. All analyses were conducted on dry, whole corn samples, and DM digestibility was determined for dry-rolled corn samples. Trial 2 used 12 hybrids to evaluate steam flaking or dry rolling on DM and starch …

Revitalizing Elementary Social Studies Using Informational Texts, Kimberlee A. Sharp
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
One component of the United States’ public school curriculum core is social studies. Since the No Child Left Behind Act (2001), elementary social studies has been marginalized, and in some cases, eliminated from the school day in favor of increased time for literacy and mathematics instruction. Kentucky’s adoption of the ELA Common Core standards in 2010 and emphasis on informational texts to teach reading, may turn out to be an opportunity to re-position social studies’ importance in the elementary school day. This study seeks to understand whether the ELA Common Core is the impetus teachers need in order to revitalize …

City-run festivals, such as the art and crafts festival in Paintsville, Kentucky, create opportunities for rural communities to increase their local economy through visitor attendance and local purchases. Paintsville, KY has successfully hosted the annual Kentucky Apple Festival as its proud tradition for more than 50 years (City of Paintsville, 2017). The Apple Festival could draw an average of four to five thousand attendees annually. The Apple Festival visitors traveled from neighboring counties and spent money at many local vendors, traveling festival vendors, local restaurants and gas stations. This festival is an excellent example for a rural or country town …

Online Learning In Schools Of Business: The Impact Of Strategy On Course Enrollments, Michelle B. Kunz, Janet M. Ratliff
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Online education in schools of business is an ongoing, emerging practice. Strategic planning by institutions and programs seeks to identify the most relevant factors in providing the most effective online learning for students. This requires that schools of business figure out what factors positively and directly affect course enrollments. This research study surveyed deans of AACSB-accredited business schools to determine their online learning strategies and practices. The results of the survey and study support online education as a means to meet the increasing needs of a diverse and ever-changing student population both now and in the future.
