Alcohol Use At Otterbein, Otterbein Student Affairs Office, Otterbein Athletic Department

The 360 Proof Personal Feedback Index (PFI) was developed to measure alcohol usage and attitudes among college students. During the spring of 2014, 441 Otterbein students, including student athletes and Greeks, completed the PFI. The data indicates that that 58 percent of Otterbein students drink between zero and three drinks per week; 60 percent drink between zero and three drinks per occasion. The average number of drinks consumed per week at Otterbein is 5.8, which is consistent with the national average. The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CEBS) received funds to create a task force to determine the best strategies to ensure that students have an opportunity to understand their discipline in a global context. The CEBS Global Pathways Initiative Committee created a generic module on globalization principles that can be integrated into any course in all program areas. These curriculum materials provide a basic introduction to existing knowledge regarding cultural competence. However, little research examines the impact of anxiety on math performance for young children participating in school-based interventions enhanced by family components. Child–senior relationship training (CSRT) is an adaptation of child–parent relationship therapy (CPRT), a highly effective intervention for children, where trained senior citizen volunteers provide free play sessions for children whose parents are unable or unwilling to participate in CPRT. This study explored the effects of CSRT on kindergarten children and the senior volunteers’ effectiveness with children following training. The researchers propose CSRT provides benefits to busy school counselors by closing the gap between the high number of students needing services and the historically low number of providers. This article examines how traditional college-age women adjust to the campus environment, including alcohol usage and sexual risk-taking, from a developmental/feminist perspective. Interpersonal adjustment, alcohol usage, and sexual risk-taking are explored, with consideration for physical and psychosocial consequences. Recommendations for counseling, including an illustrative case example, are provided.

The Digital Portfolio helps employers validate skills and employability. For students, the digital presentation of creative material, skills and competencies becomes a life-long resource. This presentation, by a business research librarian and a career and industry adviser, will provide participants examples of students transitioning their digital storytelling. The presenters will share resources and strategies to coach students from simply managing a collection of digital material through to a Digital Portfolio demonstrating a professional identity.

Depressed smokers are a group of individuals whose health and overall functioning can benefit from interventions aimed to enhance well-being. Researchers have recently found significant relations between positive affect and smoking cessation success, and between low affect and smoking relapse, and unsuccessful abstinence (Cook et al., 2010; Leventhal et al., 2008, 2009; Niemiec, 2010). The Effectiveness Of Student Success Courses On Students Enrolled In A Remedial Reading Course, Emily Walters

This study examined the impact of strategies for success courses on success of students in remedial education at a rural community college. Participants included 594 students ages 17 to 51 (M = 20.03, SD = 4.25) that were enrolled in one of two remedial reading courses while concurrently enrolled in strategies for success course. A quantitative study was used to determine if students completed more terms and achieved a higher cumulative GPA, if they were enrolled in strategies for success compared to their peers that were not enrolled in a strategies for success course. This proposal was created in order to design and implement a theory-based Incoming International Student Orientation program for the College of the Atlantic (COA) Office of International Student Services in Bar Harbor, Maine. This is a Course-Linked Capstone Proposal (CLC) for the two-day orientation that prepares incoming international students for life at a small American college and touches on aspects of immigration regulations, culture, transitions, and student development.

Because of the far-reaching legal, monetary, academic, and public relations ramifications of the sex abuse scandal at Pennsylvania State University, campus administrators are reviewing and more strictly enforcing the mandatory reporting requirements of Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments and the Clery Act related to sexual harassment and sexual violence. Assessment is an integral part of both traditional and online education, especially when determining student learning outcomes. In the online learning environment, both formative and summative assessment practices require an understanding of the features and tools inherent to the electronic medium. Creating assessments for online education, either formative or summative, also requires application of constructivist learning principles to our collective understanding of the educational process and related goals. In this paper, we offer an overview of formative and summative assessment approaches suited to the online education environment.
