This chapter outlines a multi-site, multi-year pragmatic study, entitled Sound Connections: Composing Educational Music, concerned with what works and solving problems related to the relationship of music composition to music learning. Findings indicate that the composers most often wrote several movements, each which could be performed as an independent work and with themes that appealed to young people. The pieces were rated by the teachers as easy to medium level with some of them having particularly challenging sections which required additional rehearsal time. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between teachers' classroom management and instructional clarity skills, and students' mathematics achievement as well as the mediator role of students' attitudes towards mathematics in these relationships. The sample consisted of 3536 fourth grade and 3678 eighth grade students who participated in TIMSS 2019 from Turkey. Based on theory, a saturated model was created, and it was focused on estimates and R squares. According to the results, for both fourth and eighth grades, all paths were statistically significant. Teacher practices and expectations are important factors for students’ academic and behavioral functioning (Andersson & Palm, 2016; Oliver, Wehby, & Reschly, 2011; Rimm-Kaufman, Storm, Sawyer, Pianta, & LaParom 2006; Rubie-Davies, 2007; Sandholtz, 2011). The current measures available require a great deal of resources (i.e., time, money, personnel), have poor psychometric properties, or are not comprehensive (e.g., facets assessed; assessment of teacher practices for different grade levels). The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine educators perceptions of the effects of generational poverty and adverse childhood experiences on student learning and to understand the factors that might facilitate breaking the cycle of generational poverty and adverse childhood experiences with respect to student learning.

Data collection strategies included individual interviews and document review. Analysis of data occurred in three phases: categorization of data, building the explanation in narrative form and reexamination of the data. The analysis of the data was based on Payne’s idea of generational poverty and the CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences(ACE) study.

The use of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for a student with a disability is mandated under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 and is used to determine the educational needs of that child. IDEA defines an IEP as a “written statement for each child with a disability that is developed, reviewed, and revised in accordance with section 1414(d) of this title” (2004). This also ensures that students receiving these services through the IEP must have them available in their least restrictive environment. Incorporating interprofessional collaboration competencies into both undergraduate pre-licensure and graduate health science students poses challenges for academic health science centers. Certain student groups may have less opportunity to participate in interprofessional learning experiences due to demands of individual programs of study and conflicts in scheduling time with other disciplines. Currently, many academic institutions are using one or more variations of online modalities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and science educators face a unique challenge with distance-learning laboratories. Many resources to engage students in virtual, interactive laboratory activities exist, but we found that high costs and/or overlooked content left gaps for several topics typically taught in a general, introductory biology course for undergraduate biology majors (e.g., organismal biology). Media, Obesity Discourse, And Participatory Politics: Exploring Digital Engagement Among University Students, Tao Papaioannou

Situated within research on youth, participatory politics, and media framing of obesity, this study examined how undergraduate students in a media literacy course engaged with obesity discourse as a nexus of civic participation. Twenty-nine students enrolled in the course identified frames of obesity in plus-size model Tess Holliday’s Instagram posts surrounding her controversial Cosmopolitan cover in 2018. Analysis of these frames – self-validation, injustice of fat-shaming and stigmatization, influences of Instagram celebrities on fat embodiment, and health stereotypes of obese individuals – enabled the students to understand activist responses to accepted body norms and moral values facilitating weight bias. Educators face a challenge, specifically related to the development of non-cognitive skills, mindset, and student achievement. Currently, the focus of educators is on academic skills; however, research shows that non-cognitive skills, including mindset, can account for 75% of a student’s achievement (Peterson, 2018). Social cognitive theory and mindset theory suggest that mindset affects educators and learners at all levels.
