Insights From Two Decades Of P-12 Engineering Education Research, Cary I. Sneider, Mihir K. Ravel

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The 21st century has seen a growing movement in the United States towards the adoption of engineering and technology as a complement to science education. Motivated by this shift, this article offers insights into engineering education for grades P-12, based on a landscape review of 263 empirical research studies spanning the two decades from January 2000 to June 2021. These insights are organized around three core themes: (1) students’ understandings, skills, and attitudes about engineering and technology; (2) effective methods of P-12 engineering education; and (3) benefits of P-12 engineering education. The study aimed to experimentally verify the efficacy of wearing flotation aids to add buoyancy from the pelvis to the side of the thigh on the swimming performance of beginning swimmers who were capable of swimming around 25 meters at a time. The study recruited seven male university students who were members of the Physical Education Department and who lacked experience in specialized swimming instruction. The study found statistical difference in prone flotation between the use of flotation aids (7.27±1.92 sec) and without flotation aids (3.50±0.72 sec). Family support is a critical part of college student retention. Given the strength of parental educational attainment in predicting access and persistence among college students (Choy, 2001), some have questioned the capacity for families to support first-generation college students. Family support may be especially critical for first-generation college students, who value interdependence more highly than continuing generation students (Stephens et al., 2012). This paper centers the perspectives of first-generation students in a school of social work and their experiences of family support. The purpose of this study was to investigate the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and its implications of being a curricular and pedagogical intervention in terms of narrowing the achievement gap in science education for Children of Color. In using the explanatory mixed methods design, standardized test data and one-on-one interviews were examined to assess the effectiveness and impact of the NGSS’ implementation in the state of Louisiana. The paper is the review of Ocean Vuong’s novel, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, which was published in 2019 by Penguin Press, New York. The paper contains a brief summary of each chapter and the author’s views about the complexity of queer identity in Vietnamese culture. The paper also touches on taboo subjects, such as mental health and queerness, and how they shape Vuong’s perspectives on family relationships, generational trauma and toxicity of nail culture. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous represents a new generation of young writers who carry multiple identities and want to reveal themselves to the world.

This study aims to investigate the link between the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model (UTAUT) and the acceptance and use of Blackboard (BB) among English as a foreign language (EFL) instructors. The UTAUT model was employed to determine the strength of predictors for EFL instructors’ willingness to use BB for educational purposes. A questionnaire was administered to 80 EFL instructors at Taibah University. This study explores the acceptance and use of WhatsApp messenger for teaching and learning in senior high school during the COVID-19 pandemic period. This research adapted TAM as its theoretical model. The participants of the study were 62 history students from a senior high school in Ghana. This study addressed a different approach to online language teacher training programs. The researchers investigated the pros and cons of having local mentor support for an online course titled Using Technology in the English Language Classroom provided by the AE E-Teacher Program. The course was offered to preservice teachers from 24 different universities across Turkey. The study collected data through a pre- and post-online survey and individual semistructured interviews. This manuscript shares the implementation of an after-school literacy in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program designed for middle grade students to increase their interest in science and mathematics learning. This program was conducted at our local Boys and Girls Club facilities where students learned about four science topics (renewable energy, water cycle, Newton’s laws, and natural disasters). Students participated in culturally responsive reading and writing activities incorporating culturally relevant books, journal writing, hands-on projects, and a culminating science fair presentation on a topic of their choice. The Relationship Between Teachers' Cue-Utilization And Their Monitoring Accuracy Of Students' Text Comprehension, Janneke Van De Pol, Tamara Van Gog, Keith Thiede

We investigated to what extent teachers' use of diagnostic cues and the accuracy with which they interpreted or judged the values of those cues affected teachers' monitoring accuracy. Forty-six secondary education teachers judged the text comprehension of six students (216 students in total). Mere use of diagnostic cues appeared not sufficient. Rather, accurately judging the values of a diagnostic performance cue was related to higher monitoring accuracy. Using non-diagnostic student cues hampered teachers' monitoring accuracy. The key to further improve monitoring accuracy might lie in improving teachers’ ability to accurately judge diagnostic cues and help them ignore non-diagnostic cues.
