Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

In this study, we examined elementary pre-service teachers’ perspectives on civic education and information and media literacy. We designed an intervention in an elementary social studies methods course to examine if pre-service teachers’ learning experiences shifted attitudes toward and imaginations about their future practice as teachers. Initial findings, based on interview transcripts and classroom artifacts, confirm the importance of bringing civic education and information and media literacy to young learners and offer insights into the kinds of support pre-service teachers may need to do so.

Effectiveness Of A Multidisciplinary Atlas: Integrating Dermatological And Urological Anatomy For Enhanced Medical Education, Neharika Penmetcha, Jared Hensley, Blake C. Martin, Justin Heckman, Aun Bangash, Ricardo Belmares

Research Symposium

Background: Understanding the connections between the skin and urogenital systems is important for medical students, as many diseases affect both areas. Dermatology and urology are often taught separately, but combining them into a single learning resource could help students see how these systems are linked. By including real clinical cases in a multidisciplinary atlas, students might better understand anatomy, retain knowledge longer, and develop stronger problem-solving skills. This review explores how combining dermatological and urological anatomy in one atlas could improve medical education.

Methods: This literature review synthesizes findings from peer-reviewed studies on multidisciplinary teaching strategies, case-based learning, and visual …

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the recent past many professional schools of education in the United States have embraced social justice as central to their mission in preparing teachers, counselors, and administrators to work in preK-16 settings. This article documents our initial inquiry guided by mindful wonderment into an effort to frame social justice as a collective collaboration involving support staff, faculty, and administrators within a graduate school of education. A series of focus groups made up of members of a school of education considered the commitment to social justice not only for its preK-16 candidates but also for transforming the environment and culture …

A joint position statement issued in December 2024 by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) on teaching mathematics to students with disabilities lacked substantive, actionable, research-validated recommendations to support the work of practitioners in the field. Herein, we provide a rationale for ways in which the eight recommendations for teachers included in the position statement fell short, provided misleading information, and ignored the large body of research on providing mathematics instruction for students with mathematics disability or difficulties. In response, we offer seven actionable, research-validated recommendations, including: (a) use systematic, explicit …

Addressing The Disparity: Examining The Barriers To Success For Economically Disadvantaged Students In Advanced Placement, Brittany Culbreath

Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) Dissertations

There are perceived barriers that impede students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who are identified as academically qualified for Advanced Placement coursework but do not enroll. Additionally, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds experience barriers to achievement while taking AP classes. These limitations impede students’ ability to perform optimally in a rigorous academic environment. The level of access students from low-SES backgrounds have once they enter AP courses is crucial. Equity can be an issue if there are barriers that need to be addressed for students and teachers. In terms of AP courses, existing gaps in the research need to be filled …

The Heart Of Higher Education: Rediscovering Meditation From The Margins Of Learning To A Liberatory Pedagogy In The Post-Pandemic University, Jinting Wu, Yuejia Wang, Yu Wu, Qi Zhang

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

On May 14th, 2022, a racially motivated mass shooting occurred in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Western New York. The trauma brought fresh anguish to a fraught social landscape already shaken by COVID-19 and resurgent racism. This paper explores the formation of a campus meditation group that emerged in light of the shooting tragedy and prolonged pandemic suffering, and its members’ journeys of healing, self-discovery, and transformation. While scholars have critiqued the neoliberal higher education for producing self-enterprising individuals motivated by economic rationality, this paper offers our humble attempt to re-center meditation as a liberatory pedagogy in fostering …

The Effect Of Peer Mentoring On Stress Levels Of First-Semester Nursing Students, Sara K. Myers 2025 Fort Hays State University

The Effect Of Peer Mentoring On Stress Levels Of First-Semester Nursing Students, Sara K. Myers

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Abstract

Due to the immense complexities of nursing education, students in a program of nursing experience higher levels of stress when compared to other disciplines, which can lead to negative learning outcomes and attrition resulting in significant financial losses for academic institutions. Peer mentoring is an evidence-based strategy to support students by engaging in a mutual relationship, yielding positive learning outcomes through stress reduction for the mentee and the mentor. A quasi-experimental quantitative-qualitative study design will be performed to investigate the effects of a well-organized, supported peer mentoring program between first-semester nursing students and fourth-semester nursing students at Wichita State …

“The Mixed-Up-Ness Is The Complete Picture:” Lessons From Vietnamese American Understandings Of Family Histories, Van Anh Tran 2025 Stanford University

“The Mixed-Up-Ness Is The Complete Picture:” Lessons From Vietnamese American Understandings Of Family Histories, Van Anh Tran

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

The experiences of refugees and their children contribute to a complex narrative of remembrance, citizenship, and belonging in the United States. In this study, I analyze the narratives and multimedia creations of the children of Vietnamese refugees to explore how they negotiate generational memories to make meaning of their personal identities and family histories. I organized participants' ways of processing their families’ histories around themes of fracture, excavation, and return. I argue that their approaches show how they began/continued to heal and how they could, then, re-member. The meaning-making processes of Vietnamese American young people offer powerful considerations for educators …

Creating A School Climate Of Belonging And Engagement Through Visionary Leadership And Student Art, Jeff Irvine, Kyra Kristensen-Irvine

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

This research adopted a case study methodology to investigate how student artwork helped establish a school climate that was intentionally inviting to students and the wider school community. Through the visionary leadership of two principals, a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school and a middle school enhanced their common areas through student visual arts projects. Previous research on school physical environments focused on safety, cleanliness, and noise levels. This paper addresses a research gap, identifying the role that physical environments played in promoting a positive school climate which in turn promoted students’ sense of belonging and engagement.
