Pre-Certification Interprofessional Education: Ideal Vs. Reality Patient Safety Curriculum, Edward E. Ward 2017 George Fox University

Pre-Certification Interprofessional Education: Ideal Vs. Reality Patient Safety Curriculum, Edward E. Ward

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Watershed events at the turn of the millennium brought international attention to profound breaches in patient safety due to medical error, prompting an outcry for a collaborative focus on medical education to eliminate similar future events. Researchers suggested almost two decades ago that exposure to teachings on medical error prevention and patient safety should happen early in student training, not merely in post-certification coursework. Nevertheless, medical errors continue to increase. This study investigates the priority given to error prevention and patient safety in current interprofessional education (IPE) curricula of pre-certified learners. This qualitative investigation was sequential in two phases. Phase …

The Mediating Role Of Representational Predicaments : Between Autocratic Leadership And Subordinates’ Workplace Behaviors, Nan Wang

Lingnan Theses

A representational predicament for an employee is a negative experience in which that employee believes that a key authority, such as his/her supervisor, has unfavorable perceptions about himself/herself caused by misconception, bias, or ignorance. That implies he/she is experiencing injustice at the workplace. Drawing for underlying explanations on the theories of interactional justice and equity, this study examines, through quantitative and qualitative methods, how autocratic leadership influences subordinates’ representational predicaments and in turn adversely affects subordinates’ behaviors in the workplace. The model developed in this thesis proposes that a subordinate is likely to have a stronger experience of representational predicaments …

Maximizing Operating Room Performance Using Portfolio Selection, Vivek Reddy Gunna, Amin Abedini, Wei Li 2017 University of Kentucky

Maximizing Operating Room Performance Using Portfolio Selection, Vivek Reddy Gunna, Amin Abedini, Wei Li

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The operating room (OR) is responsible for most hospital admissions and is one of the most cost and work intensive areas in the hospital. From recent trends, we observe an ironic parallel increase among expenditure and waiting time. Therefore, improving OR scheduling has become obligatory, particularly in terms of patient flow and benefit. Most of the hospitals rely on average patient arrivals and processing times in OR planning. But in practice, variations in arrivals and processing times causes high instability in OR performance. Our model of optimization provides OR schedules maximizing patient flow and benefit at a fixed level of …

An Optimization Model For Operating Room Scheduling To Reduce Blocking Across The Perioperative Process, Amin Abedini, Wei Li, Honghan Ye

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Operating room (OR) scheduling is important. Because of increasing demand for surgical services, hospitals must provide high quality care more efficiently with limited resources. When constructing the OR schedule, it is necessary to consider the availability of downstream resources, such as intensive care unit (ICU) and post anaesthesia care unit (PACU). The unavailability of downstream resources causes blockings between every two consecutive stages. In this paper we address the master surgical schedule (MSS) problem in order to minimize blockings between two consecutive stages. First, we present a blocking minimization (BM) model for the MSS by using integer programming, based on …

Herding And Anchoring In Macroeconomic Forecasts: The Case Of The Pmi, John B. Broughton, Bento J. Lobo 2017 Chapman University

Herding And Anchoring In Macroeconomic Forecasts: The Case Of The Pmi, John B. Broughton, Bento J. Lobo

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We test if analysts display multiple biases in forecasting the Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) manufacturing Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI). We adopt a test that does not require knowledge of the forecaster’s prior information set and is robust to rational clustering, correlated forecast errors and outliers. We find that analysts forecast the PMI poorly and display multiple biases when forecasting. In particular, forecasters anti-herd and anti-anchor. Anti-herding supports a reputation-based notion that forecasters are rewarded not only for forecast accuracy but also for being the best forecast at a single point in time. Anti-anchoring is consistent with forecasters overreacting to …

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

Emergency Department (ED) crowding and bottle necks are the reality of hospitals across the country. Patients seeking care and needing inpatient beds via the emergency rooms are facing delays with attaining the right level of care. Orchestrating a patient through an ED admission requires a multidisciplinary effort to provide safe, effective and efficient care. This quality improvement project conducted in a tertiary acute care hospital focused on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid metrics to measure Emergency Department (ED) throughput. This multidisciplinary initiative focused on reducing time stamps for patient arrival to the ED through departure to hospital or home. Outcomes …

Western Australian Arable Crops Industry - Overview For Potential Investors And Other Stakeholders, Virginia Wilkinson, Tim Morris, Nicki Hall, David Hughes Professor 2017 Coriolis

Western Australian Arable Crops Industry - Overview For Potential Investors And Other Stakeholders, Virginia Wilkinson, Tim Morris, Nicki Hall, David Hughes Professor

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

When looking at opportunities for investment in the Western Australian arable crop production system, one must consider by whom? If you were to judge purely from the popular press, you would believe Western Australia agriculture was totally controlled by billionaires and foreign speculators. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The largest farmer, the largest farmland owner, the largest investor, the largest employer and the largest agrifood research funder in Western Australia (WA) is the government. The government is also the largest builder of the infrastructure used by the industry. At the same time, the government invests in food safety …

Understanding The Effects Of Regulatory Focus On Proactive Behavior, Brian P. Waterwall 2017 Louisiana Tech University

Understanding The Effects Of Regulatory Focus On Proactive Behavior, Brian P. Waterwall

Doctoral Dissertations

Over the past decade, motivation research has focused on what motivates employees to engage in behaviors that fall outside of ones' job/task requirements and bring about meaningful change in the organization's environment, proactive behaviors (Bateman & Crant, 1993; Crant, 2000). Recently, regulatory focus theory has received considerable research attention because of its potential to explain additional variance in behavior beyond other motivational constructs. Regulatory focus theory suggests that during goal striving, people will display behaviors associated with their current motivational state. Drawing from prior research examining motivation and behavior, I propose and test a model that examines the effects of …

Value Cocreation As A Double-Edged Sword In Customers' Quality Of Life And Service Outcomes, Arash Hosseinzadeh 2017 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Value Cocreation As A Double-Edged Sword In Customers' Quality Of Life And Service Outcomes, Arash Hosseinzadeh

Theses and Dissertations

Both Service Dominant (SD) logic and transformative service research have received attention from marketing managers and scholars as a result of the expansion of the service sector. However, the SD logic perspective on "the growth of human wellbeing needs more explanation and attention" (Vargo & Lusch, 2016, p. 20). Healthcare is particularly relevant to both streams of research and enables customers to contribute to their wellbeing through cocreation of value. The marketing literature indicates customer value cocreation (CVCC) in healthcare activities enhances service perceptions and quality of life (QoL). However, the healthcare literature demonstrates that cocreation may damage patients' psychological …

Antecedents And Outcomes Of Customer Engagement: Bridging Customer Value Co-Creation Behavior And Customer Psychological State Engagement, Samaneh Torkzadeh 2017 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Antecedents And Outcomes Of Customer Engagement: Bridging Customer Value Co-Creation Behavior And Customer Psychological State Engagement, Samaneh Torkzadeh

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation draws on service-dominant logic and reviews the engagement literature to explore the antecedents and outcomes of two multi-dimensional customer engagement constructs: psychological state engagement (PSEngagement) and value co-creation behavior. PSEngagement is a precursor to value co-creation behavior, with the latter also known as behavioral engagement in prior research.

The model proposed in this dissertation was tested in two service contexts: higher education, with a sample size of 454, and fitness, with a sample size of 122. To minimize the common method variance typical of survey research (Podsakoff, et al. 2003), the model was tested twice per context, once …

Equity Mispricing, Firms' Innovation And Institutional Investors, Hamid Sakaki 2017 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Equity Mispricing, Firms' Innovation And Institutional Investors, Hamid Sakaki

Theses and Dissertations

First essay has two primary objectives. First, I investigate the relation between institutional investors and firms’ innovation activities and second, the impact of different types of institutional investors on firms’ innovation by classifying institutional investors into five groups. After controlling for other determinants of innovation, the results show that higher institutional ownership stability boosts innovation activities measured by the number of patents and citations. The results also indicate that banks, insurance, and investment companies have a positive and significant effect on firms’ innovation, while investment advisors could affect innovation activities negatively. Moreover, when I classify the institutional investors based on …
