While latinos make up 18% of the American population, many analysts are noticing a problem with their education (Flores, 2017). One attempt to confront this problem is by the implementation of Dual-Language Immersion programs. The attempts to successfully transition first generation Spanish-speaking children into a predominantly English-speaking society like America have produced negative effects on their cognitive development. This establishes the premise for educational hardship throughout their scholastic development. Through historical records, personal accounts, and reputable journals this study leads to the conclusion that Latino Americans regardless of the racial tensions of the past have always been ready and willing to serve for a multitude of reasons including, patriotism, educational benefits, economic advancement, and most importantly equality. In the United States, the Latino/a population is very poorly represented in the media by being both misrepresented and underrepresented in all forms of media including: newspapers, television news, and movies. When and where there is representation, it typically is a negative portrayal of a Latino character or story. This passive racism assigns these people a negative connotation regarding their ethnicity and as a result, it has a destructive effect on their population. This thesis uses in-depth analysis of historical Los Angeles Times articles to trace the changing representations of the Latino community in the media. Focusing on themes of patriotism and citizenship, this thesis draws out the subtleties of syntax and semantics that silently influence public opinion. The Zoot Suit Riots and the Chicano Moratorium serve as the main historical backdrop, leading to a concluding exploration of Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric surrounding immigration and the Latino community.

The data used was elicited from thirty one participants employing a task where the influence of the orthographic representation of the graphemes and was absent. Self-esteem is a widely-studied construct across many disciplines of social science. However, previous research regarding self-esteem and language barriers has focused primarily on children and adolescent populations, while much less research has examined this relationship among adults. The current study measures linguistic acculturation and self-esteem in both Latino and control adult samples. Hypothesis 1 states that participants in the Latino sample would report significantly lower self-esteem than the control sample. Hypothesis 2 states that linguistic acculturation levels in Spanish speaking Latinos would be positively correlated with self-esteem. The excavation of Cueva del Lazo, a cave on the cliffs of the Río La Venta River canyon in the Zoque region of Western Chiapas (Mexico), led to the discovery of a complex Late Classic post-sacrificial context where eleven children were buried wrapped in textile bundles.
