National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

This presentation will demonstrate how Hip Hop and African American History are used as educational teaching tools in our evidenced based program to promote social, emotional, and violence prevention skills. Explorations from the African diaspora, historical trauma, slavery, post traumatic slave syndrome to decoding and deconstructing hip hop elements all intersect to provide the basis of violence prevention, and more profoundly social and emotional balance.

School Leaders Supporting Students Of Color In Predominately-White Schools, Jonathan Swan

Legal challenges to racial segregation and changes in the racial composition of many suburbs have altered the racial makeup of public schools in the United States. This phenomenological study looked at how principals in Predominately-White schools (PWS) and educator facilitators for a state desegregation program (DP) learn about the perceptions of students of color (SOC) in their schools, address negative perceptions of SOC, and attempt to support SOC; it also inquired about hindrances to their efforts to serve SOC more effectively. Thematic analysis of transcripts of interviews with five principals and four desegregation facilitators led to 10 findings. Critical Race …

Womanist Ways In A Man's World: Unpacking Anti-Blackness In Higher Education Enrollment Management Roles, Mesha C Garner

This study evaluated the phenomenon of anti-Black womanism in enrollment management at Historically White Institutions (HWIs) for Black women professionals. The qualitative study was conducted to understand dialectical functions of enrollment management and the dialectical responsibilities that Black women have while working in enrollment management. The theoretical framework of anti-Black womanism guided this study. Anti-Black womanism is a dual lens of BlackCrit (Dei, 2017; Dumas and Ross, 2016) and Womanism (Phillips, 2006). Furthermore, this study comprised the historical perspective and acknowledged the settler-colonial complex to best conceptualize the perceptions of Black people, particularly Black women. An increased interest in Black Nationalism has emerged in recent years. It is generally agreed that the goal of the Black Nationalist movement is to liberate black people from oppression in all its forms. Though the Black Nationalist movement began in the early nineteenth century, the supporters have not reached their goal (Blake, 1969). Systemic racism in the United States continues to be pervasive in our modern society. As such, it is evident that the liberation of the black community requires action. #Reclaiming My Time: Structural Violence, Racial Trauma And The Case For A Transformative Healing Justice For Black Women Movement Actors, Shaneda L. Destine

Societies Without Borders

This research evaluates the intra-movement conflicts and political praxis of 30 black movement actors, ages 18-40 years old from September to December 2016, in the District of Columbia and Maryland in the United States (Crenshaw et al, 2015). Intersectional theory guides this research to outline the relationship of black women movement actors’ struggles within movement spaces and their approach to a transformative healing justice. Themes arise about intra-movement conflicts as well as the importance of self-care and political education. Evidence suggests a level of healing justice in some organizations, but less political education. Implications for social movement praxis are discussed.

For Julie Moody-Freeman, reading Black romance novels isn’t a guilty pleasure - it’s an area of study. Moody-Freeman is the director of DePaul's Center for Black Diaspora and a faculty member in the African and Black Diaspora Studies Department. On this episode, she discusses the history and importance of Black love in romance novels, which inspires her work as the host of The Black Romance Podcast. She also reflects on her conversations with Black romance writers, editors and scholars and the importance of their oral histories.

Dancing Through Time: A Biographical Look On The Evolution Of Tap Dance, Jaimie Cranford

A uniquely American art form, tap dance has often been misrepresented and under-appreciated when positioned alongside other dance forms. This is largely due to the form’s racialized history, which builds upon contributions from African-American culture. Unlike other dance forms, which stem from white European traditions, tap dance evolved out of a necessity for cultural preservation as enslaved Africans adapted to life in America. As tap dance evolved, its association with slave culture led to it not being taken seriously; if anything, tap dancers were viewed simply as “entertainers” – certainly not as artists. Over the past months I have written about the need for Whites to listen, learn and recognize the plight, anger and demands of people of color. Uniquely, 2020 provided many opportunities for that journey toward clarity and, hopefully, participation in needed reform. Specifically, the teaching opportunities in 2020 were presented by George Floyd’s death; the rise in White supremacy; and, dramatically and tragically, COVID-19.

Gus Solomons Jr.: Analyzing The Dances Of An Early Black Postmodernist, Zsuzsanna Orban

Theses and Dissertations

Gus Solomons jr. was one of the first Black dancers to participate in the Judson Dance Theater workshops, but was never fully integrated into the white, postmodern dance world. This thesis looks at several of his works which exemplify his use of site-specificity and innovative technologies, including dual-screen video dances.
