Jewish Cultural Aspirations, Ruth Weisberg 2012 University of Southern California

Jewish Cultural Aspirations, Ruth Weisberg

The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review

In the late nineteenth century in Europe and to some extent in the United States, the Jewish upper middle class—particularly the more affluent families—began to enter the cultural spheres of public life, especially in major cities such as Vienna, Berlin, Paris, New York, and London. While many aspects of society were closed to them, theater, the visual arts, music, and art publication were far more inviting, especially if they involved challenging aspects of modernity that might be less attractive to Gentile society. Jews had far less to lose in embracing new forms of expression, and they were very attracted to …

Why Are There So Many Diverse Holocaust Museums?: A Journey Through The Holocaust Museums Of Five Nations, Marjorie E. Carignan 2012 State University of New York, Buffalo State College

Why Are There So Many Diverse Holocaust Museums?: A Journey Through The Holocaust Museums Of Five Nations, Marjorie E. Carignan

History Theses

Holocaust museums around the world are unique in their respective missions, funding, architecture and exhibitions. Some of these distinctions are extreme, leaving museums seemingly opposites of each other. To better understand these diversities, this thesis analyzes Holocaust museums in France, Germany, Poland, Israel and the United States. Through analysis, unique facets in many basic areas of the museums can be found, with many of these being affected by which country the museum is in. By seeing what museums choose to include and leave out, we are able to see what parts of the Holocaust could use more attention and how …

This article studies in what forms the magical-religious dimension is expressed in the fiction works of the Schwarz-Bart couple in order to assess the function given by the authors to the manifestations of the “divine” therein. The frontier between belief and miscreancy is particularly flexible in each of the novels – whether written jointly or separately – by André and / or Simone Schwarz-Bart. Indeed, co-signed or not, the identity quest cannot be dissociated from the religious one: a quest of the meaning of suffering, of a balm that remedies the agonies and compensates for the traumas endured by two …

André Schwarz-Bart’s literary call was born from his will to immortalize in writing the memory of the culture of his Jewish ancestors which was eradicated from the map of Europe during the Shoa. A pioneer of the “memory work” with The Last of the Justs, a novel awarded the Goncourt in 1959, he invented the genre of the “identity saga” whose heroes gather within themselves the centuriesold experience of their people. A similar ambition guided him while he composed a cycle – that remained mostly unpublished – about Black slavery and the culture issued from it: A Woman Named Solitude.

Jewish Christianity Reconsidered : Rethinking Ancient Groups And Texts, Matt Jackson-McCabe 2012 Cleveland State University

Jewish Christianity Reconsidered : Rethinking Ancient Groups And Texts, Matt Jackson-Mccabe

Matt Jackson-McCabe

For decades, scholars have used the phrase "Jewish Christianity" and, more recently, "Christian Judaism." But just what do those terms mean? Who were the first Jewish Christians? What counts as Jewish Christianity? Those questions receive current and definitive treatment in essays drawn together by Matt Jackson- McCabe, founder of the consultation on Jewish Christianity at the Society of Biblical Literature.

Jewish Perspectives On Christian Privilege: A Consensual Qualitative Study, Robert Kinney 2012 Seton Hall University

Jewish Perspectives On Christian Privilege: A Consensual Qualitative Study, Robert Kinney

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Although multicultural considerations, privilege, and oppression are of current interest across the field, much of the extant research has failed to explore religiosity as a component of the psychological literature. Using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) the authors set out to gain an understanding of Christian privilege and the impact it has on Jewish Identity. A sample of 12 adult, American, non-Orthodox Jews were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. The interview data was collected to better understand the manifestations of Christian privilege and the impact of said issues on participant’s lives and identities. Seven themes were identified (1) Personal Conceptualization …

Halacha And The Common Law, Arthur Lang 2012 Rutger Law School

Halacha And The Common Law, Arthur Lang

Arthur Lang

The theoretical basis of halacha differs from that of דיני אמות העלום. Obligations and liability are regulated in halacha by defining the nature of an act, did a particular ma’asa occur, whereas the common law regulates with an eye toward social policy, what consequences were set in motion by an actor. Halacha turns on the act of stealing, the act of eating matzoh, the act of acquisition, the act of homicide, the act of damaging, and the act of marrying, rather than respectively, the interference with property rights, the acknowledgment of a symbol, the contract of sale, the violation of …

The Israeli Defense Forces In The 21st Century: Humanitarian Complier Or Human Rights Violators? An Assessment Of Ihl Compliance In The Second Lebanon War And Operation Cast Lead, Skyler Scoggan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My reasons behind writing this paper are very personal and its conclusion will have a direct impact on my future. I am Jewish by blood and have always have had a strong connection with the tradition even though I do not consider myself religious. I have respected more so the traditions and culture that have come from the faith of my mother. The fact that my grandfather, great grandfather, and the dozen more before him, carried on these same rituals that I carry out on Shabbat or on the high holidays, is beyond the realm of being special. Many cannot …

Jews In The Gym: Judaism, Sports, And Athletics, Leonard Greenspoon 2012 Creighton University

Jews In The Gym: Judaism, Sports, And Athletics, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

For some, the connection between Jews and athletics might seem far-fetched. But in fact, as is highlighted by the fourteen chapters in this collection, Jews have been participating in—and thinking about—sports for more than two thousand years.

The articles in this volume scan a wide chronological range: from the Hellenistic period (first century BCE) to the most recent basketball season. The range of athletes covered is equally broad: from participants in Roman-style games to wrestlers, boxers, fencers, baseball players, and basketball stars. The authors of these essays, many of whom actively participate in athletics themselves, raise a number of intriguing …
