FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

This paper is a critical analysis of Harriet Martineau’s philosophical stance and epistemological modes, her systematic sociological methodology, her use of this methodology, and her sociology of religion. How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838), Eastern Life, Present and Past (1848), and other relevant works will be used to examine Martineau’s evolving epistemological modes as well as her sociology of religion. How to Observe, Martineau’s treatise on systematic sociological methodology and cultural relativism, will serve as an exemplar for analysis of Martineau’s methodological practice as evidenced in Eastern Life. Abstract

Objectification most literally refers to perceiving a person as an object. Research shows that when people focus on a woman's appearance, compared to her personality, she is perceived of as more of an object (e.g., lower in human nature traits). These objectification effects, however, rarely occur for male targets. Moreover, humans, unlike objects, are typically believed to have a soul, that is, some part of the self that outlasts the death of the physical body and extends into a post-mortem existence (e.g., Heaven). The Somerville Commission for Women was created in March 1988 by City ordinance. It focuses on programming aimed at anti-violence, financial literacy, empowerment, coalition building, and legislation relating to women. It was recognized by Massachusetts House of Representatives on its 10th anniversary for outstanding service in advocacy for women, opposition to domestic violence, and working for social justice.

This project is a partnership with the Women’s Pipeline for Change which aims to build a sustainable infrastructure to support women of color as they enter public life. Five community leaders from all regions of the Commonwealth are CWPPP Research Fellows conducting research rooted in their experiences. Findings from their individual projects and the broader innovative fellowship project serve as the foundation for web-based resources designed to provide inspiration, insights, and guidance to women of color in Massachusetts and beyond.

The NRCS assists farmers and forest landowners to protect the soil, water, and other natural resources on their land. Located in almost every county within the United States, the NRCS employs almost 12,000 people.

This past semester while studying abroad in Granada, Spain, I volunteered at an LGBT association called Nos. The stated goals of the organization are to “completely eradicate Lesbian, Gay Transsexual and Bifobia and fight against all types of discrimination motivated by sexual orientation or gender identity.” To achieve these goals, NOS does a variety of programming in Granada including weekly discussion groups about gender identity, youth issues, labor rights, etc. They also offer workshops focusing on topics such as safe sex practices, HIV/AIDS, visibility, and bullying in schools. Apart from this, they provide support for victims of homophobia and host …

This research wants to prove that the hijab is dynamic and not static by looking at the new styles of the hijab in Amman, Jordan. It wants to disprove the idea that the hijab is one of the many examples of the outdated practices of the hijab. This independent study project focuses on the discourse surrounding the recently-approved ‘sexual diversity within education’ policy, which requires all schools in The Netherlands to incorporate discussion of sexual diversity into their curricula. My findings are based on six interviews of individuals who, either directly or indirectly, are connected to or affected by this policy, either in their professional work or simply in their interests. My findings include themes found surrounding the policy: what is being said, how sexual diversity should be implemented in schools, autonomy of schools, normalcy, potential racism within policy implementation, and what should be done. My ISP works to illuminate the diversity of LGBTQI experiences and lives in Cape Town. I do this through discussing the privilege necessary to "come out" in Cape Town and, subsequently, have access to The Pink Village, Cape Town's gay district. By Bringing in theory on "coming out" as a white experience and the queer movement as re-centering white normativity, I work to openly discuss how a history of exclusion has lived on in Cape Town's gay district and pushed the more marginalized gay communities out of the city center.
