Understanding Women´S Empowerment Through Indigenous Epistemologies: An Alternative Approach To Development?, Melissa Klara Vonimary Søvik 2018 The University of San Francisco

Understanding Women´S Empowerment Through Indigenous Epistemologies: An Alternative Approach To Development?, Melissa Klara Vonimary Søvik

Master's Theses

Development projects that aim at empowering women have gained popularity among many actors and institutions in the field of development for their capacity to contribute in development and economic growth. Nevertheless, the concept of empowerment has also gained critics from various stands claiming it to be too technical, and not taking into account social relations in contexts where other epistemologies exist. It is necessary to adapt these kind of terms taking into account local world-views. This thesis explores the dynamics of women's empowerment in Tzeltal Mayan communities in Chiapas, Mexico. It aims at understanding the way empowerment is manifested in …

Guardians Of Virtue, Tamsen Maloy, Tasia Jensen 2018 Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY

Guardians Of Virtue, Tamsen Maloy, Tasia Jensen

Capstones

Guardians of Virtue is a short documentary following Tamsen Maloy as she explores how the church of her upbringing--the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon church)--handles sexual assault. It is quickly revealed that the church does not have adequate resources for sexual assault survivors. On the contrary, the culture and system of the church enables assault and encourages survivors to feel they are to blame.

A Poetics Of Temperance: Gender, Genre, And Meaning-Making In Early Modern England, Cristina Maria Rosell 2018 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

A Poetics Of Temperance: Gender, Genre, And Meaning-Making In Early Modern England, Cristina Maria Rosell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

For several hundred years, the scholarly discussion of temperance was dominated by the legacy of classical models. This dissertation, titled A Poetics of Temperance: Gender, Genre, and Meaning-Making in Early Modern England, develops said discussion in a new way by forging a language about ethics and aesthetics into a poetics of temperance. The term poiesis derives from Greek and signifies “to make, create, produce” (OED). Accordingly, Aristotle uses the Greek poietes, “from which our word ‘poet’ derives,” to denote a “maker” (Murray xxxii). In brief, this project understands the role of women in emergent genres as …

Personal Geography, Floating Identities And Inter-Asian Migration In Stories By Migrant Workers In Taiwan, I-Chun Wang 2018 Kaohsiung Medical University

Personal Geography, Floating Identities And Inter-Asian Migration In Stories By Migrant Workers In Taiwan, I-Chun Wang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Personal Geography, floating Identities and Inter-Asian Migration in Stories by Migrant Workers in Taiwan," I-Chun Wang discusses narratives by migrant workers with the purpose of looking into their personal geographies, their possibilities of integration, their floating identities and their dreams of settlement and possible success. This paper stresses the stories of migration show not only common human values, shared across cultures and creolization, but also sad stories of human-rights violations, injustices, discrimination, and even human trafficking. In these fictional stories or witness literature, cross-cultural conflicts, cultural in-betweenness and cultural hybridity are intertwined with the migrants’ ways to …

Limiting Queer Reproduction In Hungary, Judit Takács 2018 Bridgewater State University

Limiting Queer Reproduction In Hungary, Judit Takács

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article discusses several limiting factors that affect queer reproduction desires and practices in present-day Hungary, including distorting media representations, legislative frameworks, and social inequalities. It draws on relevant legal developments and results from previous research studies. The article focuses on how Hungarian LGBTQI people can resist the social norms and policies of heteronormatively prescribed childlessness resulting from normative expectations that non-heteronormative reproduction must be limited as much as possible, and highlights that better-off couples and individuals have more chance to realize their fertility plans through adoption, surrogacy or accessing ART than those in a more disadvantageous situation. In this …

Negotiating Access To Assisted Reproduction Technologies In A Post-Socialist Heteronormative Context, Hana Hašková, Zdeněk Sloboda 2018 Bridgewater State University

Negotiating Access To Assisted Reproduction Technologies In A Post-Socialist Heteronormative Context, Hana Hašková, Zdeněk Sloboda

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article centres on the impact of heteronormativity on the ways in which parental desires, intentions and practices of lesbian, gay, or trans people in Czechia are subjected to barriers. It explores heteronormativity by analysing how access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART) for non-straight couples (including single women) has been negotiated. We discuss discrimination against, and the statistical marginalisation of, homoparental families; the fact that same-sex Czech couples are not yet allowed to marry and that instead a new legal institution, the civil union, was introduced exclusively for them, explicitly prohibiting them from forming parental couples; the political disregard of …

Unfit For Parenthood? Compulsory Sterilization And Transgender Reproductive Justice In Finland, Julian Honkasalo 2018 Bridgewater State University

Unfit For Parenthood? Compulsory Sterilization And Transgender Reproductive Justice In Finland, Julian Honkasalo

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines the rationale of the continuing Finnish transgender sterilization requirement against the background of reproductive justice. I examine how and why the Finnish public debate on removing the sterilization clause from the Trans Act does not include an equal demand to 1) include a parental law reform and 2) a legislation on accessible, affordable and just reproductive health care for transgender persons and (cis)women alike. I will argue that since the citizens’ initiative of the marriage equality legislation in Finland was followed by another citizens’ initiative to reform the Maternity Act to include lesbian couples, transgender reproductive justice …

Unlearning Cisnormativity In The Clinic: Enacting Transgender Reproductive Rights In Everyday Patient Encounters, Theo Erbenius, Jenny Gunnarsson Payne 2018 Bridgewater State University

Unlearning Cisnormativity In The Clinic: Enacting Transgender Reproductive Rights In Everyday Patient Encounters, Theo Erbenius, Jenny Gunnarsson Payne

Journal of International Women's Studies

In recent years, transgender reproduction has become increasingly visible in public debates in Sweden. Heated debates and years of activism and advocacy ultimately led to a change in law in 2013. In the new law, the previously controversial demands for patients to be unmarried and sterile had been removed from the legal framework. As a consequence, transgender patients also became entitled to fertility preservation through assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). This gave rise to a new patient group of fertility patients with specific medical and psychosocial needs.

Drawing on qualitative in-depth interviews with healthcare professionals in a Stockholm clinic for reproductive …

Queer And Trans Access To Assisted Reproductive Technologies: A Comparison Of Three Eu-States, Poland, Spain And Sweden, Doris Leibetseder 2018 Bridgewater State University

Queer And Trans Access To Assisted Reproductive Technologies: A Comparison Of Three Eu-States, Poland, Spain And Sweden, Doris Leibetseder

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article is about the legal challenges and difficulties of queer and trans reproduction with ART in three purposely selected European states: Sweden, Poland and Spain, representing the north, east and west of Europe. Isabell Engeli and Christine Rothmayr Allison’s (2017) continuum model of classifying countries according to their permissive, intermediate or restrictive regulations for ART access serves as an example how a national comparative analysis on ART policies is established. However, this framework needs to be adjusted to address the regulations pertaining to queer and trans people’s reproductive, parenthood, and partnership opportunities. Thus, the queer and trans model I …

Religious Motivation, Priming And Their Effects On Sexist Language, Bridget Bard, Hank Rothgerber 2018 Bellarmine University

Religious Motivation, Priming And Their Effects On Sexist Language, Bridget Bard, Hank Rothgerber

Undergraduate Theses

This experiment delves into the potential effects of sexist language used in the Christian religious context on increased use of sexist language, and endorsement of sexism on an individual level. In order to demonstrate a relationship between these two variables, an experiment was designed. Participants were exposed to either a religious or neutral priming session and were then immediately asked to complete several scales and measures of sexist language, sexism, and their level of intrinsic religious motivation. The hypothesis was that participants who ranked lower on intrinsic religious motivation, and who received a religious prime, would generate increased sexist language …

Gender Differences In Attitude Toward Abortion In The Case Of Rape, Rachael Steinke 2018 University of North Dakota

Gender Differences In Attitude Toward Abortion In The Case Of Rape, Rachael Steinke

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

I used feminist theory to analyze gender differences in response to “should a woman be allowed to obtain an abortion in the case of rape?”. I utilized the General Social Survey (N = 1824) data. I considered the role of gender, marital status, socioeconomic status, and level of education in shaping abortion attitudes. I used chi-squared/logistic regression to analyze the data, finding that gender was not a significant factor in whether an individual approves of abortion in the case of rape. Married individuals were less likely to indicate support, and as level of education increased, individuals were more likely …

Perpetua And Felicity: The Unofficial Lesbian Saints, Mari Tonsfeldt 2018 University of North Dakota

Perpetua And Felicity: The Unofficial Lesbian Saints, Mari Tonsfeldt

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

The concept of homosexuality did not exist prior to the nineteenth century. In literature, this made lesbians a rarity. With the absence of women writers and even fewer lesbian writers, the question for historians became how to find our queer ancestors. Defining anyone in the Medieval Age as homosexual is anachronistic at but modern lesbians could hardly be the first.

Saints Perpetua and Felicity are commonly regarded among the LGBTQ community and members of the Catholic Church as the Patron Saints of Same-Sex Relationships but in St. Perpetua’s self-penned diary and martyr story, the two women have only one direct …

Latina Women In Adams County, Pennsylvania: Access To Mental Health Care For Depression, Alison Lauro 2018 Gettysburg College

Latina Women In Adams County, Pennsylvania: Access To Mental Health Care For Depression, Alison Lauro

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Depression has been identified as major health concern for adults in Adams County. Latinos makeup 6.5% of the population in the county and 13% in Gettysburg, yet Latina women often go undiagnosed or untreated. I created and distributed a survey to Latina women in order to understand what barriers prevent them from accessing mental health services in Adams County. The survey results show that women living in poverty, immigrant women, and undocumented women face greater challenges to accessing mental health because of a lack of health insurance, limited transportation, and language barriers. The Latino Services Task Force of Adams County …

Review Of Nonbinary Gender Identities: History, Culture, Resources, Chris Babits 2018 University of Texas at Austin

Review Of Nonbinary Gender Identities: History, Culture, Resources, Chris Babits

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

McNabb introduces the definitions, histories, and cultures of nonbinary individuals and provides scholars, archivists, librarians, and teachers with an array of resources to research the history and contemporary experiences of nonbinary people. Although the text privileges gender variance in Western nations and could have included more on gender theory, McNabb offers a strong introduction to the topic of nonbinary gender identities. Researchers will especially appreciate the comprehensive list of resources.
