Fear And Loathing: How An Engrained Fear Of The Unknown Fuels Transphobia, Elizabeth Bedortha
Community Engagement Student Work
As a way to increase legitimate education around a historically marginalized population, research was conducted around the fear of the unknown and how this fear contributes to opinion formation and informs prejudice, particularly toward the Transgender community. This research was used to inform the planning and facilitation of a panel discussion aimed at humanizing the Transgender community and encouraging critical opinion formation. A workshop and panel event was held and analysis of responses from post event surveys, interactive posters, and participant submitted questions was completed. Applying exposure theory, those who attended the panel had an overall increase in positive feelings …

Community Engagement Student Work
This project examined the ways LGBTQ+ communities document, share, and connect to their histories. It supported an interactive, sensory learning-based workshop that fostered exploration and learning in LGBTQ+ and adjacent communities. The workshop was attended by a variety of participants who showed the markers of having engaged in a cultural third space while learning about and engaging with LGBTQ+ history-based information. Overall, the workshop was a resounding success and provided opportunities for further research and exploration into the connections between how people access their personal and cultural histories and what pathways are provided for them to do so.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
While women are often excluded and/or portrayed as victims in the historical scholarship on war, this research builds on recent scholarship that shows women as active agents in warfare. I focus on Yugoslavia’s WWII Partizankas, female soldiers and activists, who held visible positions in the war effort, public consciousness and, later memory. Using gender as a category of analysis, my thesis explores Partizankas’ legacy and their contributions in the National Liberation Movement (NLM) in WWII (1941- 1945) and post-war nation building. I argue that the organizational framework of the Anti-Fascist Women’s Front (AWF) under the guidance of the Communist Party …

This study will provide explicit insights to the problems encountered by the female engineers from Asia. This study will help Asian women engineers’ aspiring careers in American engineering industries to understand the real-life scenario in terms of employment in the USA. It will also help the employers to acknowledge the problems faced by the female engineers and incorporate …

Factors That Promote Women Representation In State Legislatures, Kara Lowry
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
As more and more women run for elected offices, the need for information surrounding women in politics is growing. Scholars have extensively researched the factors that deter women from running for state legislature, but few have studied factors of the states and their populations that could potentially be promoting more female representation in state legislature. This research will compare the relationship between the state’s geographical location, the education level of the population, and the religiosity of the population to the percentage of women serving in the state legislature as of 2018. Additionally, this study will examine how Donald Trump’s presidency …

She's The Jazz: An Exploration Of Dance And Society In The Age Of The Flapper, Jillian Terry
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The 1920’s, most affectionately known as “The Roaring Twenties,” was a time of dramatic social and political change. Economic growth pushed Americans into an unfamiliar consumer society where people bought the same goods, heard the same songs, danced the same dances, and used the same slang. Prohibition laws led to the underground sale of alcohol in speakeasies where new freedoms were found through communities uniting in music and dance. Here we saw the emergence of flappers. Unlike the generations that came before, these women were seen performing unladylike actions, such as drinking and smoking, while embracing their sexuality. While not …

Zoë Charlton: The Domestic, Shannon Egan
Schmucker Art Catalogs
Zoë Charlton’s grandmother, Everlena Bates, was a domestic worker in Northern Florida. Charlton pays homage not only to her grandmother in her recent body of work, but also to the long history of African-American women’s labor in white families’ homes throughout the South. Although her grandmother did not speak often or directly about the conditions of her employment, Charlton nonetheless is keenly aware of the injustices, possible abuses, and intimate labor endured by black maids, housekeepers, and nannies who worked endlessly long hours and with little pay through the twentieth century. The collages and large-scale installation in Charlton’s exhibition The …

Legacies Of Belle La Follette’S Big Tent Campaigns For Women’S Suffrage, Nancy Unger
History
In countless speeches and articles in La Follette’s Magazine, Belle Case La Follette urged that women needed the vote to secure “standards of cleanliness and healthfulness in the municipal home,” and because “home, society, and government are best when men and women keep together intellectually and spiritually.” This range of often mutually exclusive arguments created an inclusive big tent. However, arguing that women were qualified to vote by their roles as wives and mothers while maintaining that gender was superfluous to suffrage also contributed to an uneasy combination that would continue the conflict over women’s true nature and hinder their …
