Mr. Hashemi And Family Dynamics In Iran, Ronak Karami 2020 Bridgewater State University

Mr. Hashemi And Family Dynamics In Iran, Ronak Karami

Journal of International Women's Studies

The 1979 Revolution in Iran exploded aggressively because of the pressures that the Shah enforced on Iranian society; however, similar to the Shah, the Islamic regime imposed strict rules and regulations on Iranians in different ways to control society (especially women) via Islamic values. Hoping to create an obedient society, the state focused on educating children and youngsters on the ideologies of the 1979 Revolution. It emphasized gender discrimination in order to create a new generation who would follow the traditional model of mother-at-home and father-at-work because it needed women inside the house who can give birth and raise their …

Gender Bias In Persian Literature Textbooks, Ronak Karami

Journal of International Women's Studies

Even though Iranian women had a strong presence in the 1979 Revolution in Iran, the Islamic regime imposed new strict rules and regulations on them. Encouraging women to pursue education and take part in society did not improve women’s social position since job opportunities were limited for them. The investment in women’s education was to benefit society and the new regime because the state needed educated mothers at home whose children would ensure the nation’s prosperity. Accordingly, the educational system would be the most efficient way to strengthen traditional sex roles so that at least half of the population would …

“Men Should Stay Out And Women Should Pack The Bags At Home” : The City Of Mice And Gender Practice In Iran, Ronak Karami

Journal of International Women's Studies

The 1979 Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War that began in 1980 have played an effective role in reconstructing contemporary Iranian culture, history, and politics. The war was beneficial to Ayatollah Khomeini and his new regime in defining themselves and their ideas and suppressing opposition, so he refused to end the war for eight years until 1988. However, by the end of the war, neither Iran nor Iraq had achieved their aims: Iraq's attempts to bring down the revolutionary government in Iran failed, and Iran could not provoke a revolution in Iraq. The Islamic Revolution and the war imposed new kinds …

The Revival Of The Handmaid’S Tale: Empowering Women’S Rights In The Twenty-First Century, Bassmah B. Altaher

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminists fought for the sake of justice and equality, paving the way for so many women to believe in their inner strength and ability to create change, but with the turn of the twenty-first century, many women who are victims of rape and sexual harassment still prefer to remain silent. The only possible way to move on and heal is to seek one’s truth, yet the voices of the victims are overlooked in the face of extreme oppressive patriarchal societies. The entertainment industry and social media are two powerful tools women can use to make their voices heard, and celebrities …

Journal of International Women's Studies

Infant mortality, ineffective ante- and post-maternal healthcare and stagnated development in Nigeria are decades old concerns that need urgent redress. The Time To Question, Rethink And Popularize The Notion Of ‘Women’S Issues’: Lessons From Jordan’S Popular And Labor Movements From 2006 To Now, Sara Ababneh 2020 Bridgewater State University

The Time To Question, Rethink And Popularize The Notion Of ‘Women’S Issues’: Lessons From Jordan’S Popular And Labor Movements From 2006 To Now, Sara Ababneh

Journal of International Women's Studies

Jordanian women were an integral part of the Jordanian Popular Movement (al Hirak al Sha’bi al Urduni, Hirak in short) protests in 2011/2012. Yet, despite their large numbers and presence, female protestors did not call for any of the commonly known ‘women’s issues’ (qadaya al mar’a) which include fighting Gender Based Violence (GBV), legal reform, increasing women’s political participation, and women’s economic empowerment. This paper argues that the protestors’ silence concerning most of the problems usually included in the list of ‘women’s issues’ raises the question of how prevalent these issues are (or not) in the lives of Jordanian women. …

Journal of International Women's Studies

Wars and conflicts have had a profound impact on women and gender in the Middle East. In this article, we aim to highlight the various ways in which the ongoing oppression and conflict in the Middle East shape the responses of the Iraqi, Palestinian and Kurdish women of Turkey and the object of their struggles. We go beyond the ‘Orientalist’ discourse, which depicts Middle Eastern women in armed conflicts as solely vulnerable and helpless victims, to discuss the resisting roles played by the Iraqi, Palestinian and Kurdish women of Turkey. Middle Eastern women have played and continue to play major …

Beyond Feminism: The Egg As A Symbol Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In The Work Of Anna Maria Maiolino, Mónica Lindsay-Pérez 2020 Bridgewater State University

Beyond Feminism: The Egg As A Symbol Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In The Work Of Anna Maria Maiolino, Mónica Lindsay-Pérez

Journal of International Women's Studies

So easy to break and yet impossible to fix, the egg is, in itself, a contradiction: soft but hard; delicate but durable; impermanent but episodic. One of nature’s most interesting creations, it is impossibly bigger on the inside than the outside and has accordingly captivated artists’ minds throughout history. Artists have employed the egg as an allegorical tool for its religious, surrealist, or feminist connotations. Ana Maria Maiolino, a Brazilian artist born in 1942, pushed the egg metaphor beyond its most common iconographic meanings. For the artist, the egg was not simply a religious, philosophical, or feminist symbol, but also …

Why Are Women’S Self-Help Groups On The Periphery Of Adivasi Movements In India? Insights From Practitioners, Parijat Ghosh, Dibyendu Chaudhuri, Debasish Biswas 2020 Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN)

Why Are Women’S Self-Help Groups On The Periphery Of Adivasi Movements In India? Insights From Practitioners, Parijat Ghosh, Dibyendu Chaudhuri, Debasish Biswas

Journal of International Women's Studies

‘Adivasi’ is an identity of protest against the oppressive practices of displacement and dispossession faced by tribal communities across India. As the social and political scenario of the vast Central Indian Plateau (CIP), the homeland of many such communities, is shaped by the social dynamics of oppression and resistance, any social or political organisation working in this region for justice and equity has to not only understand this adivasi consciousness of resistance against the concentration of capital and accumulation of surplus through a process of dispossession but also evolve their strategy in the context of adivasi consciousness. The authors have …

Herbert Macaulay As The Father Of Nigeria’S Nationalism: A Historical Misnomer And Misogyny Regarding The Role Of Igbo Women In The Decolonization Process, Uche U. Okonkwo

Journal of International Women's Studies

For over six decades of Nigeria's independence, history has continued to place the role of women in the decolonization process in Nigeria in a state of oblivion. Such obloquy on Nigerian women is the primary concern of this research. This paper raises questions on the impositions of Herbert Macaulay as the father of Nigerian nationalism. Historical evidence points to the direction that King Jaja of Opobo, Nana of itshekiri and Oba Ovaranwen, were the pioneer nationalists because of their resistance struggle against British colonial rule. Yet they were not acclaimed fathers of the nationalist movement in Nigeria. With the huge …

The Understanding Of Women’S Movement Activists On The Necessity Of Critical Analysis Of Television Content In Iran, Kobra M. Kachalmi, Lee Yok Fee

Journal of International Women's Studies

Iranian TV tries to legitimize and reinforce sexism and male domination with oppressive gender representation. The current study investigates how critical analysis of media is necessary for Iranian women from the viewpoints of Iranian feminist activists. Using a qualitative approach of semi-structured interviews with 15 Iranian feminist activists, this paper contends that critical reading of media messages is essential for Iranian women. In addition, the Iranian feminist activists believe that because media has a purpose, …
