This dissertation uses a feminist political ecology perspective to explore the socioeconomic impacts of climate change in Ecuador, especially but not limited to the agriculture sector. It is based on the use of mixed methods that allowed the participation and validation of the local population, surpassing their role as beneficiaries to co-authors of this research.

The rape scene has occurred and recurred in literature since literature’s inception. Though the function of this versatile trope is not always clear, its prevalence is undeniable. Often, these gruesome scenes appear as works of realism, presenting women’s harsh reality to the public to expose rape culture. In popular women’s fiction, however, the purpose of the trope is not as clear. Janice Radway, in Reading the Romance, and Tania Modleski, in Loving with a Vengeance: Mass-produced Fantasies for Women, address such occurrences in their critique of romance novels whose plots rely heavily on the rape or near-rape of the heroine. …

In this autoethnographic dissertation, I take readers on a narrative journey to three of my storied homeplaces and explore my lived experiences within each site. The ABJS Project is participatory action research that combines a photovoice and transformative storytelling approach to collect qualitative data on the experience of Black birthing people from Albany who are impacted by racial inequities in birth outcomes. The methodology promotes self-reflective, trauma informed education and care among co-researchers, including undergraduate students and storytellers from Albany County.

Sample photovoice narratives are included, along with an annotated bibliography.

My research is focused on the Peace Corps, specifically looking at the experiences of volunteers in order to see how they are reinforcing and/or resisting white saviorism and American imperialism. I used an intersectional approach in order to understand how the experiences of volunteers are shaped by racial and national relations of power. I have used discourse analysis to analyze blogs made by Peace Corps volunteers in order to see if narratives of the US needing to save the world and spreading American values were present. The purpose of this study was to provide insight on the impact of gender-specific mentorship for aspiring female collegiate wind band conductors. The areas of focus included impactful mentorship methods, identifying mentors, and potential improvements for the wind band field. This research project was approved for an IRB exemption by the Old Dominion University College of Arts and Letters Human Subjects Review Committee. In her master work, Loba, Diane di Prima revises a variety of traditionally malecentered narratives from a feminist viewpoint in the long tradition of feminist revision that is a cornerstone of Second Wave Feminism. This thesis examines five of the revisions of Christian, Jewish, and Greek stories present in Loba: The Virgin Mary, Eve, Lilith, Helen of Troy, and Persephone. Di Prima revises these stories to include the full— physical, spiritual, and emotional—experience of the woman, often from her own point of view, to give the woman agency over her own story and subvert the woman-as-object tradition present in male-authored …

Structural racism in the United States affects racial and ethnic minorities in many areas of life. The Black community, specifically, faces the highest risk of police violence and brutality. In particular, this paper explores the ways in which adverse police violence experiences affect Black women. Black women often face marginalization in movements for racial justice and gender equality, so this paper investigates the intersectionality of how Black women experience police violence. This thesis engages a literary analysis of a corpus of songs and recordings known as the rebetika (sing. rebetiko), which prospered in the port districts of major cities throughout the Aegean in the early 20th century. Engaging the rebetika as literary texts, I argue, helps us understand how they have functioned as a kind of pressure point on the borders between nation and Other. Without making unproveable biographical claims about the motives of the music progenitors, I examine why so many have reached for the rebetika as texts with which to articulate various political and cultural desires.
