An Interactionist Approach To Btlg Pride, Lain A.B. Mathers, Jason E. Sumerau 2022 Indiana State University

An Interactionist Approach To Btlg Pride, Lain A.B. Mathers, Jason E. Sumerau

The Qualitative Report

Within and beyond Symbolic Interactionism, sociological studies of bisexual, transgender, lesbian, and gay (BTLG) populations have expanded dramatically in the past two decades. Although such studies have invigorated our understanding of many aspects of BTLG life and experience, they have thus far left BTLG Pride relatively unexplored. How do BTLG populations experience Pride, and what insights might such efforts have for sociologically understanding such populations and events? We examine these questions through an interview study of bi+ people (i.e., sexually fluid people who identify as bisexual, pansexual, or otherwise outside of gay/straight binaries; Eisner, 2013). Specifically, we analyze how bi+ …

Comic Literature And Graphic Novel Uses In History, Literature, Math, And Science, James O. Barbre Iii, Justin Carroll, Joshua Tolbert

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

Graphic novels and comics have a rich history and have long served as a medium for both education and entertainment. Although we live in an increasingly technology-rich era which offers abundant visual stimulation to compete with comics, graphic literature is arguably a more immediate and robust resource than ever before. The following paper highlights specific applications of graphic literature to pedagogical purposes, including implications for the use of comics in teaching history, world languages, English as a new language, science, and mathematics. Across these areas, a wide degree of application exists for teachers, in both K-12 and post-secondary settings. In …

“…And I Thought That Was A Queer Thing To Do”: Transmasculine Identity In The Lokasenna, Tevye J. Schmidt 2022 College of Arts and Humanities, Lindenwood University

“…And I Thought That Was A Queer Thing To Do”: Transmasculine Identity In The Lokasenna, Tevye J. Schmidt

The Confluence

This paper seeks to explain the viewing of Loki through a lens of transmasculine identity, focusing on the ways in which gender expression and identity were viewed in Scandinavia during the Middle Ages. The current scholarship on Loki and gender expression, specifically in his interactions with the other gods in the Lokasenna, suggests a reading that is misogynistic on Loki’s part. This reading and translation also suggest homophobia and transphobia from Odin. This paper argues that these translations lack the nuance that a reading of Loki as transmasculine brings, and that this reading is important in breaking down modern …

Michelangelo Buonarroti And Homophobia In The Renaissance, Grace T. O. Ray 2022 Lindenwood University

Michelangelo Buonarroti And Homophobia In The Renaissance, Grace T. O. Ray

The Confluence

Tommaso de’ Cavalieri was a young man with an aristocratic background when he first met famous artist Michelangelo Buonarroti in Rome. Tommaso was known to be an incomparable physical beauty, with intelligence and elegant manners, as well as being a member of one of the most illustrious families of Rome—the Orsini. Some have said this is what drew the artist to Cavalieri from the start. Though not much is known about their encounter, it is confirmed that Cavalieri remained a close and loyal companion to Michelangelo for thirty-two years until the artist’s death in 1564. Furthermore, throughout their years together …

Macnaughton, Daniel, Wendy Chapkis 2022 University of Southern Maine

Macnaughton, Daniel, Wendy Chapkis

Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Dan MacNaughton was born in 1955 in Bangor, Maine, and raised in Hampden, Maine with his mother, father, and older brother. He came out as gay in high school with supportive teachers and classmates who were either supportive or indifferent. However, he had deeply internalized homophobic attitudes and believed that being gay meant he had very limited employment options. In college at the University of Maine Orono, MacNaughton became active in the newly formed Wilde Stein student group where he became the first Vice-Chair of the club, met Sturgis Haskins, and became involved in educational efforts on campus. He also …

Review Of Emergent Masculinities: Gendered Power And Social Change In The Biafran Atlantic Age. By Ndubueze L. Mbah. Athens: Ohio University Press, 2019. 307 P. $ 33.20., Nadir A. Nasidi

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

For a long period of time, women played significant roles in many pre-colonial African societies, serving in various capacities as religious, political, and economic leaders. The exact roles and status of these women, however, differ contrastively from one society to another based on factors such as religion, culture, and social organization. Though this unpopular fact about African history receives little or no attention from scholars, few studies offer some insights into the history and transformation of the powers of female leaders in Africa (Weir, 2000; Ogbomo, 2005; Weir, 2006; Achebe, 2011; Akyeampong & Fofack, 2014). Along this intersection, Mba's Emergent …

Ghosting Humanity: In Search Of An Ethics For The Disappeared, John Kaiser Ortiz

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper visualizes what an ethics of the disappeared might look like if the troubled ontology of ghosts and their (un)seen realities are posited as real as allied discussions of the victims of human trafficking and other instances of violence against women, including femicide and sexual slavery.

Review Of Walaa Alqaisiya. Decolonial Queering In Palestine. London: Routledge, 2023, Ankita Chatterjee

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Decolonial Queering in Palestine by WalaaAlqaisiya offers an in-depth study of the conquest of Palestine with respect to the variegated power structures of settler colonialism and underscores the political significance of a reformulated mode of decolonization. It argues for the need to interweave queer into the native Palestinian positionality termed as 'decolonial queering', so as to challenge the (hetero) sexualizing and gendered discourses embedded within both the Israeli/Zionist settler colonial regime and the Palestinian Nationalist visions of liberation. By the 'ethnographic' engagement with the works of Palestinian artists and activists from one of the prominent queer groups, alQaws, the book …

“I Live A Model Life, Now I’M Ready To Be A Top Wife”: Stereotypical Representations Of Black Women In Reality Television, Joy C. Enyinnaya

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Stereotypical representations of Black women have endured throughout various forms of media for decades, with one of the most recent platforms being reality television programming. The theory of encoding and decoding posit dominant stereotypes are key in television encoding. Using critical discourse analysis, this paper demonstrates that the dominant ideologies in the eleventh season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta are social class norms and negative depictions of Black women. I present evidence that RHOA continues to reinforce upper-class ideologies while perpetuating the Jezebel, Sapphire and the Strong Black woman stereotypes. I also identify a correlation with the strong Black …

Perhaps Discomfort Is The Answer: Refusing Liberal Feminism And Imperial Cartographies Of Thinking/Feeling, Saida Hodzic 2022 Cornell University

Perhaps Discomfort Is The Answer: Refusing Liberal Feminism And Imperial Cartographies Of Thinking/Feeling, Saida Hodzic

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The Twilight of Cutting: African Activism and Life after NGOs is an unsettling feminist ethnography that traces the movements of three objects: the endings of female genital cutting in Ghana, their relationship to anti-cutting campaigns and the forms of governance they instantiate, and the role anthropology and feminism have played in this governance since colonial rule. It makes the case that the three objects must be studied together: namely, that we need to understand the practice of female genital cutting alongside its endings; that cutting does not exist outside of anti-cutting campaigns; and that anti-cutting campaigns are entangled with both …

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

With considerable fanfare, in Adieu !'Excision. Histoire et fin d'une tradition (Raymond Hounsa, 2009), Christa Muller rejoices in having saved Benin from FGM, the French text lauding eradication. The effort instigated by a Saarbrucken-based NGO, it has banned blades from the vicinity of vulvae. In 1996, on a state visit, Muller, then married to Saarland's governor Oscar Lafontaine, was asked by Benin's First Lady Rosine Vieyra Soglo1 to assist her Inter-African Committee (IAC) chapter by creating an association. This she did, launching I(N)TACT, e.V. and securing 300,000 Euros for the movement, a sum with strings, however. Berlin insisted on …

Effect Of Awareness Of Government Initiatives On Financial Inclusion: A Study Of Domestic Workers In The City Of Bengaluru, Kiran Hiremath, Shalini R

Journal of International Women's Studies

A key assumption in economics is that economic growth brings prosperity to all sections of the society in an equitable manner. Historically, economic growth is not associated with equitable distribution of wealth. Governments all over the world make policies and implement them to engineer an equitable distribution of wealth. Financial exclusion is the single most important factor which can keep poorer sections of the society away from the benefits of economic growth. Financial inclusion creates a window of opportunity for poor sections of society to take part in the economic prosperity brought in by economic growth. A financially inclusive society …

Women's Empowerment, Mindfulness, And Role Of Women In Eradicating Alcohol And Drug Addiction From Indian Society, Ranjit Singha, Yogesh Kanna S 2022 CHRIST (Deemed to be University)

Women's Empowerment, Mindfulness, And Role Of Women In Eradicating Alcohol And Drug Addiction From Indian Society, Ranjit Singha, Yogesh Kanna S

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women’s empowerment and self-help groups are functional and successful in India in most instances; it is possible to improve them further by incorporating quality parameters in the various training programs. Most of the locally organized skill-training by different empowerment cells operates effectively. Training and operating procedures must be devised to ensure that self-help groups meet international standards for their products. The training is often held in remote locations, making it difficult for the facilitator to visit and provide instruction. There must be established criteria for selecting trainers and a planned curriculum for training. There is a social impediment in the …

Why Mentoring Is Essential In Creating Support Systems For Women, Julie Sunil 2022 Presidency Business School, Bangalore

Why Mentoring Is Essential In Creating Support Systems For Women, Julie Sunil

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article focuses on exploring whether mentoring programs for women can speed the process of bridging the gender gap. Several measures have been taken in the past to ensure that gender equality in the workplace and society is practiced at the grass-roots level. However, the problems encountered during such an exercise may be compounded by the women’s own attitudes towards their place in the social hierarchy and their potential as well as their assessment of other women. This paper, based on a literature review, explores the prevailing attitude of women towards other women and their right to employment. When few …

The Politics Of Representating Dalit Women: A Study Of The Newspaper Khabar Lahariya And The Documentary Writing With Fire, Harishma Hari K, Khamarunnisa P. A 2022 Kerala Institute of Tourism & Travel Studies, Trivandrum Presidency College

The Politics Of Representating Dalit Women: A Study Of The Newspaper Khabar Lahariya And The Documentary Writing With Fire, Harishma Hari K, Khamarunnisa P. A

Journal of International Women's Studies

Redefining power is the only means to redress the gender bias that women have had to endure in a male-dominated society. As Héléne Cixous declared in “The Laugh of the Medusa” (1975), “écriture feminine” (or women’s writing) is the only way to emphasize women’s perspectives and end stereotyping of women and their opinions in literature. Such ideas helped to transform the representation of women in literature. This transformation is required not only in the literary world, but there is also an urgent need for the realistic representation of women in every section of society. Media being a powerful tool has …

The Ripple Effect Of Terror: Escalating The Rules Of Patriarchal Conformity Upon The Psyche Of Women In The Oleander Girl, Chitra Susan Thampy, Pauline V N

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women continue to be deprived of their right to live independently and within acceptable boundaries. Indian women frequently take up the responsibilities of preservers of culture and tradition. They are constrained by an excessive number of laws and regulations, most of which are justified in the name of customs and religion. The patriarchal power that is inherent in Indian society shapes how they experience the Indian value system. In the case of the lives of women in the diaspora, due to their struggles with the financial and psychological uncertainties of exile, the responsibilities of family and career, and the claims …

Employing a rigorous systematic protocol, eligible articles were analyzed and a total of 22 studies that met all eligibility criteria were included in the systematic review. The total sample size was …

Presence-As-Resistance: Feminist Activism And The Politics Of Social Contestation In Iran, Navid Pourmokhtari 2022 University of Alberta

Presence-As-Resistance: Feminist Activism And The Politics Of Social Contestation In Iran, Navid Pourmokhtari

Journal of International Women's Studies

Using a Foucauldian perspective on power and resistance, this paper traces the history of oppositional movements founded by Iranian women to bring about fundamental social and political change during President Mohammad Khatami’s second administration (2001-2005). Denied the political rights, freedoms and opportunities available to oppositional groups operating in Western democratic countries, these feminist movements adopted a radically new strategy for winning social and political rights grounded in an everyday politics of social negation and social subversion of the status quo played out in urban public spaces. Referred to here as “presence-as-resistance,” this strategy constituted an everyday mode of opposition involving …
