"I'M Absolutely Ordinary": Bella And Her Perception Of Gender Within Twilight, Jaid M. Eichmiller 2020 Portland State University

"I'M Absolutely Ordinary": Bella And Her Perception Of Gender Within Twilight, Jaid M. Eichmiller

University Honors Theses

This thesis explores Bella's perceptions of femininity, virtue, and gender roles within Twilight, with a focus on the feminist stance that Bella takes as the narrator. Through a close reading, I explore traditional gender roles, the internalized maternal roles of wife and mother, and the externalized judgements that Bella expresses. Her relationships with those around her, and most importantly Edward, are judged by her internalized concepts of gender politics. Through the examination of previous literature and the close reading of the core text, I argue that Bella both embodies and rejects traditional femininity.

Elizabeth Kent’S New Tales Of Botanical Friendship, Leila Walker 2020 CUNY Queens College

Elizabeth Kent’S New Tales Of Botanical Friendship, Leila Walker

Publications and Research

Elizabeth Kent has been considered a rather minor figure in the Leigh Hunt circle. However, this examination of her previously unknown children’s tales illuminates how Kent’s generic crossings establish a common emphasis on observation in the realms of botany, pedagogy, and poetry while suggesting that what happens beyond the observable world might be equally generative. Taken as a whole, Kent’s work constitutes a previously unacknowledged challenge to the Cockney School’s almost fetishistic attachment to the social. The identification of New Tales brings into focus Kent’s efforts to systematize friendship through her writing and clarifies her ...

Final Master's Portfolio, Lisa Berlekamp

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

This portfolio is comprised of four papers which demonstrate my growth in English and my ability to use this growth to improve my knowledge and skills as an educator. Projects To Enhance And Innovate Learning In The High School English Classroom: A Final Master’S Portfolio, Kayla Welch

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

My purpose for this portfolio is for each reader to look at teaching in a new and innovative way that will guide students and educators. I have resources in each project that will push ideas for new projects or encourage readers to try a new writing mode or novel that they have never tried before. I hope my students are engaged in my variety of lessons and research and feel challenged to push themselves in their own research and writing. I encourage the reader to use the following projects to create a positive writing and reading environment in the classroom.

Enriching Creative Communities Through Young Adult (Ya) Literature: A Content Analysis Of Zines From Philippine High School For The Arts, Reya Mari Soriaga Veloso

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

Prompted by the recent boom of zine-making and the active participation of youth in the local art scene, this paper is focused on determining the role of zines in the lives, culture of creation, and community engagement of young adults (YAs) and creating a typology based on the coming-of-age themes presented in fiction and nonfiction zines created by students at Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA). To do so, the researcher collected zines from various events and expos, chose zines written by YAs (PHSA students in particular), conducted focus-group and individual interviews among the authors, and performed content analysis ...

Phone Down Magic On (An Augmented Reality Performance/Reading), Laura Zaylea 2020 Temple University

Phone Down Magic On (An Augmented Reality Performance/Reading), Laura Zaylea

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Phone Down Magic On is designed as a chapter book for children, grades 3-5, and each chapter begins with augmented reality content. The story follows three young friends who text each other before bed. By holding a phone above the physical chapter book, readers see the characters’ texting session as if it were happening on their own phones… and when a parent says to put the phone down, the texting stops and the “magic” begins. The screen interface dissolves into a dream scene, and clues to a mystery are presented in floating text presented within animated sequences supported by sound ...
