“石華”一辨 : 兼論謝靈運《遊赤石進帆海》詩之主旨, Jing Li

本文擬從對謝靈運《遊赤石進帆海》詩中的“石華”這一名物的考辨入手，重新認識謝靈運帆海之遊的目的；同時，通過對詩中典故（如“陰霞”、“窮髪”、“虛舟”等）的考證，判斷謝靈運在創作該詩的時候所聯想到的意象和文本，并試圖分析這些典故在詩中重組後的意義，并藉以歸納全詩的旨趣。總的來說，謝靈運前往帆海的動機包括了三個方面：尋仙藥（石華、海月）、訪天池之仙人、探索未知的遠海。而詩的主旨則落在“至人無己”、“適己”和“終然謝先伐”之上。全詩統一於“養生”的主題。

With an exploration of the term shihua (rock flowers) in Xie Lingyun’s poem “You Chishi jin fan hai” (On a Trip to Red Rocks I Sailed out on the Sea) as the point of departure, this paper re-interprets the poet’s motivations for seafaring. By investigating the allusions such as yinxia (lunar fire), qiongfa (barren land), and Xuzhou (vacant boat), this paper speculates on the images and texts the poet thought of when writing this poem, tries to analyze the significance of re-organizing these allusions, and in so doing summarizes the poem’s theme. The emergence of digital technologies has transformed organizational innovation with important implications for a city, its economy and policymaking. Despite this, research on how capabilities underpin innovation through smart city initiatives is still lacking. To address this gap, we conduct an empirical investigation of smart city initiatives in Macau, a former Portuguese colony and now special administrative region (SAR) of China. The case study adopts a qualitative approach, using data collected through fieldwork observations and in-depth interviews with stakeholders, and analysis of secondary documents. 張可久以極為可觀的散曲数量（全部元散曲的五分之一）以及其獨特的散曲風格在中國散曲史上佔據了舉足輕重的地位，尤其是張可久的散曲風格融合了中國傳統的詩歌元素和當時盛行的散曲形式，自成一派。本文旨在重现具有融合性美學詩歌功能的張可久式散曲創作觀。主要包括：第一，本文將對張可久散曲的節奏、對仗、押韻等散曲形式層面的主要構成要素進行詳細考查，以此探討張可久如何通過散曲的形式體現中國古典詩歌的美學特徵。第二，本文將通過對張可久時代的整個文化背景下的集體文學創作活動的分析，證明張可久散曲的融合性特徵並不是文言雅風格與口語俗風格的機械疊加的產物。

Zhang Kejiu 張可久 occupies an important position in the history of sanqu 散曲 (colloquial song). Not only does the sheer volume of his sanqu songs account for one-fifth of the extant sanqu songs, but his significance also lies in the unique style of his songs. In particular, his sanqu songs hybridize traditional literary elements with the up-and-coming form of sanqu. This article examines how Zhang Kejiu embodied the aesthetics of classical poetry in the format of sanqu through a detailed examination of meter, parallel lines, and rhyme. All APALA members were invited to nominate picture book titles about AANHPI communities and experiences that were published in the 2022 calendar year. Members of the APALA Family Literacy Focus Committee evaluated the nominations against the APALA Rubric and curated the final list. Eligible titles that earned a 2023 APALA Literature Award or Honoree designation were automatically added to the Best of the Best Booklist.

Rising tensions and an increased number of incidents between China and Japan in the current century show that the Nanjing Massacre has had an indisputable effect on modern Sino-Japanese relations politically and socially. Iris Chang’s book of popular history, The Rape of Nanking (1997), both renewed scholarly research and moved the debate into the public eye. This thesis asserts that Chinese material culture, specifically porcelain, was instrumental in the development of American perceptions of China in the colonial period through the late 19th century. The first chapter examines how the quality, durability, and uniqueness of Chinese export porcelain led Europeans, and by extension American colonists, to view China as an advanced and abundant civilization populated with ingenious craftsmen. Here I report that part of the Manchu gaining control of Tibet was their use of religious manipulation. Through the line of Manchu leaders, there are trends of the Manchu focusing on securing their rule and using culture to gain compliance. The trend of securing power is set by early Qing leaders, and this trend becomes religious manipulation in later emperors.

The construct of individual accountability has been tested by two prior studies including Frink et al. (2018), finding that individual accountability is a second-order construct in which the components focus, intensity, and salience are loaded, as well as Verwaeren and Nijstad (2021) who found that individual accountability focus is a two-factor construct (process and outcome). This paper argues that Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) designed his aphoristic compilation, Jiaoyou Lun 交友論–On Friendship (1595)–to serve the Jesuit mission of converting the Chinese to Catholicism and express the conflict he may have felt exploiting friends to forward the Jesuit mission. Utilizing friendships to allow for greater social influence was central to the Jesuit proselytization strategy in China. However, Ricci’s moral education from youth taught him to judge utilitarian friendships as immoral. The extant scholarship regarding Ricci’s On Friendship fails to acknowledge the significance of the aphoristic form to this work. To illuminate the value of aphorism …

This study takes a genealogical and historicized approach to Mandarin-to-English translations, including my own, of Can Xue through neoliberal discourses of “world literature.” I ground these Anglophone discourses in the legacies of Sinology, area studies and post-Cold War historiography. Arguing for the necessity of a decolonial translation practice in Mandarin-to-English translation, I propose magical-traumatic realism (an intersection of magical realism and traumatic realism) as an alternative lens with which to contextualize, decolonize and re-embody Can Xue’s works in both source and “world” contexts.

This thesis will examine the depiction of Asami as a female antagonist figure in the 2001 film adaptation of the novel Audition directed by Miike Takashi and adapted from the 1997 novel of the same name by Japanese horror author Murakami Ryū. Our research group has initiated a program to systemically investigate the phytochemical composition and biological activities of a library of TCM medicinal plants. Herein, extracts of four commonly used TCM plants including broccoli (Brassica oleracea) seeds, horny goat weed (Epimedium brevicomu), houpu magnolia (Magnolia officinalis) bark, and golden root (Rhodiola rosea) were selected for this study. Sino-American bilateral trade relations have increased significantly in the past four decades since China started its economic reforms in 1978. The bilateral expansion in trade has been accompanied by increased complexity and tensions, which emerged in the form of a trade war during the President Trump administration. After a series of tit-for-tat tariff increases, in an attempt to address concerns through negotiations, both sides reached a Phase One agreement.
